Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ Deaths and Promises ❯ Chapter 1

There I was, walking through the streets of Station Square, not a care in the world. Suddenly, I was engulfed by an eerie darkness that sent chills up my spine. I looked up and noticed the humongous floating island hanging in midair above my head. (In this story, even though I don't even know if it is floating above Station Square, Angel Island is floating above Station Square in the outskirts of town, near the ocean, so deal with it!) As I started to look back down towards the cold, hard ground, I realized that I had forgotten something. How the hell could I be so stupid?! I totally forgot; I was supposed to meet Amy in Station Square's center square for lunch. Oh, well, it can happen some other day; besides, it seemed like she's been getting more and more clingy ever since I agreed to take her out to lunch. Actually, more like I was forced to agree to take her out to lunch. Yeah, that sounds about right…
So, as I was walking, I had this weird feeling of sorts, like I was being watched or followed. I stopped and turned my head so I could see the woods that I was walking next to out of the corner of my eye. I saw a bush rustle but didn't see anything else, nor did I hear anything. I started to walk straight again, but then got tackled to the ground by a black hooded figure. I had shut my eyes so as to not get dirt or any other chemical substance that who knows is on the ground in my eyes. Once I felt I was safe from anything entering my eyes, I opened them and looked up. The black figure was gone, and when I reached into my pocket I noticed something else was gone too; the Chaos Emerald that I had was gone!
I jumped up and started searching the ground frantically, finally bumping into some big, black boots only to be knocked on my ass again. I looked up and saw someone I hadn't seen in about 10 years; Shadow! And he had the Chaos Emerald and was throwing it in the air and catching it again as if it was some kind of kiddie toy. He threw it down to me, as I was still on the ground at this point, too surprised and appalled to get up, and I almost dropped it in my attempt to figure out why he showed up, why I was on the ground, and how I got here in the first place.
As I got up, he said to me: “Dude, you need to learn how to catch.”
“Shut up,” I said. “I'll have you know, that I can catch just fine.” And as I got back up, I dropped it on the ground; I cursed at my butterfingers under my breath.
“Well, by that show of utmost stupidity and bad coordination, I'd say that you can't catch or stand up straight.” He said.
“Shut up,” I said again, this time I had a loss for words and was muttering to myself.
“Is there something you want to say, or are you going to stand there like an idiot all day?” he asked, folding his arms.
I looked up at him, as I was standing up again, but my head was faced toward the ground, and stared into his eyes for the first time in 10 years. His eyes were cold and solid and I could see the aging and tiredness in them. He looked bad and ill, and I felt for him, but I know he wouldn't want any aid for this sort of thing; but then again, why did he show up now? Why didn't he show up 5 years ago, even 2 years ago? Why did he wait so long to return to Station Square? He was being missed by everyone, even Knuckles and myself. I figured I'd ask him these questions once we got back to my house, but he had turned around and was walking away before I knew what was happening.
“Hey! Shadow! Come back here!” I yelled, but he was already halfway down the street and he just, disappeared, materialized into thin air, almost as if his body had just been a particle of dust sucked up by a vacuum cleaner. I watched after the no longer visible Shadow the Hedgehog, knowing that one day, he would return again to Station Square; I guess today was not his day…
As I stood there like an idiot looking at nothing in particular, I heard the voice of a certain pink hedgehog: “Sonic! Soooo-nic! SONIC!” she screamed. What was I going to do? If she saw me standing here, she'd certainly say something involving why I didn't show up for lunch today, but where could I go?
I searched around frantically for a place to hide, and when I couldn't find one, I jumped into the bush that Shadow had “appeared” from. As I knelt down watching Amy walking the street, I realized that the emerald was still in the road! Oh shit! I thought. She'll find me for good now.
As I watched her looking back and forth with a worried look on her face, I saw the outline of a certain someone come up from the reeds across the street; I saw the outline of a two-tailed, orange-yellow fox emerge from the reeds. I saw Amy wave and say hi to him. Then they started talking and she started to giggle, and then she leaned in and started to kiss him! This burned my cookies, so I jumped out from behind the bush and tackled the bastard to the ground.
“What the hell are you doing!?” I screamed at him; I wasn't punching him or anything, just, sitting, pinned him down on the ground. I was infuriated, and I could feel a vein popping out of my head. I just sat there and stared at him with an irate expression on my face; out of the corner of my eye I could see Amy cowering and whimpering in a way that seemed almost pitiful, but we all know that she was pitiful for this kind of stuff in the first place…
Tails was now looking at me in a bewildered kind of way like I had gone insane or something. And then he started to talk, finally! “Sonic,” he started. “It's not what you think…” But I cut him off before he could finish; “What is it then?!” I shouted. “What kind of sick mind games are you playing with my…” I stopped short to see that Amy had stopped shaking and looked around at her; she was staring attentively at me now, as if that would prod what I was about to say out of me.
“What were you going to say, Sonic?” she asked curiously; she had this look on her face, that made her look 10 years older than she really was, almost more mature, because all the years that Shadow was gone, she really hadn't matured much. But I shouldn't say that, because, well, she had changed, and a lot, too; she wasn't chasing after me as much anymore, and she seemed to always be asking Tails for help instead of me, and I did not like that…
“What were you going to say, Sonic?” this time her voice had gotten rougher and louder, and more furious with me. I just looked at her, not saying a word, just, staring. I saw a vein pop out of her head and I saw her hand start twitching. I knew she was about to start swinging, but I couldn't say anything; I had a very bad loss of words, especially at this moment in time…
“N…nothing, Amy,” I said. “Just… nothing…” I felt like an idiot now and looked shamefully towards the ground. She came over and pushed me off of Tails and she helped him up. I almost started to cry, but I wouldn't let myself. I just, sat there. “Hey, Sonic!” it was Tails. I looked up at him, and he threw me the green Chaos Emerald. “You dropped this.” And he walked away, hand-in-hand with Amy.
I stared after them and I got really frustrated, but I didn't do anything to stop them. I can't believe I almost called her my girl… And in front of her face, too! There was nothing for me to do now, just sit and stare lonely at the ground, knowing that she was with Tails now. It hurt me inside to know that she loved me and I never paid her attention, and now she's off with Tails. Well, I can fix that… I'll make sure of it…
Two days later…
“Sonic?” It was Amy; how did she get into my house? I wondered.
“Sonic?” I saw her head peek around the doorway to the kitchen and sigh when she saw my lying on the couch. She walked in and said: “Sonic, have you seen Tails? He was supposed to meet me in town today, but he never showed up…” She trailed off, apparently lost in thought. I just sat there smiling, praying that she didn't see me. When she looked back at me, I snapped my face back into my “relaxed” position.
“No, I haven't seen him,” I said. “Why do you ask?”
“I just told you!” she exclaimed, but I was just trying to make her angry; she's hot when she's angry…
“Oh, right…” I said, acting confused, but fully aware of what she was talking about. “Lunch. Sorry, I'm a little dazed tonight…” (It is 8:00 pm)
“That's alright…” she said. “I didn't expect you to know where he was anyways. I mean, what was that performance you put on a couple days ago? It's like, you changed personalities or something. I didn't like it one bit Sonic… Is there something you're not telling me?”
This time, I sat up and looked at her. She had a confused, puzzled look on her face, and I knew there was something wrong when she looked like that. I just took the remote to the TV and clicked the “power” button and the TV snapped on. It was on the news channel and the reporter was saying something about gas prices being too high… Then, she said that they had a breaking story and the camera averted to a scene in the woods and showed a team of CSI's standing over a body.
Amy shrieked when she saw who it was and I gulped rather loudly when I saw why she screamed. It was Tails! How did they find him? I wondered. I thought I hid his body good enough… obviously not good enough. Good thing I didn't leave any evidence around or on him that points to who murdered him… ME! (plot twist! You guys know you like this! Oh yeah!)
I chuckled to myself and I stopped immediately when I thought that Amy could hear me, but she was too preoccupied in the story of how they unearthed the now dead fox-boy. When they stopped reporting on it, she stood up, as she had been kneeling right at the TV, and looked at me with those big eyes, but this time they had tears in them.
She opened her mouth to speak, but I cut her off by laughing manically. She stared at me, and then her mouth dropped open.
“You… killed… Tails?!” she screamed. “How… could… you!” she choked.
“Easy,” I said. “I used a thing called `intelligence'. Something that stupid fox-boy never had when it came to wits.”
“They'll find you for this and then they'll lock you up and maybe even kill you!” she yelled. “And if they don't find you, I'll tell them myself!”
“You can go ahead and tell them, see if I care.” I said. “They'll never believe you. I'm a `hero', remember? I can get away with anything and they'd never expect a thing. That's the beauty of being a hero; you can get away with murder!” and I grinned the most evil grin in the world, and I could tell it scared her, because she backed up and got goose bumps all over her body. I started laughing evilly again; it felt good for some reason.
“How could you?” she asked, this time not crying anymore, just really frustrated; I leaned back and put my hands behind my head in a casual manner. “He was your best friend, and you killed him!”
“He took you from me,” I said, looking at her. “Amy, I do love you, I just never showed it because I was afraid you'd get hurt.”
“Well, that's ok, because now I hate you!” she screamed. “I never want to speak to you again!” and she took her Piko Piko Hammer out and tried to hit me with it, but I took it by the end of the staff, and I threw her and the hammer against the wall.
“Can't you see, Amy?” I started. “I am much more powerful than that little creep ever was. I could kill you, too, right here, right now, if I didn't care about you so much.”
She started to get up, but I pushed her back down on to the floor; she was taken aback at this sudden behavior from me, of all people, but I liked having the power, because now I could do whatever I wanted to do and not get caught for it. She stared up at me, and almost started to cry; “No one cries in my house, especially you!” I yelled at her. That only made her start to bawl, and that's when I picked her up and threw her out the door into the street. “And never come back, unless you change your mind about caring for me. I'll be waiting!” I yelled after her, as she had started running down the street now to, no doubtlessly, her house. (I know what you're all thinking, a little dark for Sonic, but hey, he needs his time to be evil too)
I walked back inside and plopped down on the couch. I clicked the TV off, as it was still running, and, knowing I couldn't stay in one place for 5 minutes straight, I got up, yet again, and ran outside. I ran for about an hour before heading back to the place that I had buried Tails. There was a gravestone there now and some flowers lying over the freshly unearthed dirt. I stared at the flowers and noticed that they were from Amy's garden. I picked them up and sniffed them; they smelled just like her and, not being able to take it anymore, I threw them over the edge of the bank to the ocean.
As I stood there watching them float off into the distance, I saw the same black figure that had tackled me 2 days ago, emerge from the reeds. It was Shadow.
“Hi,” I said. “What are you doing here?” I sat down in the middle of the road, wishing that a car would come and just run me over and end my life.
“I saw you kill Tails,” he said. “But, then again, I also saw him steal Amy from you… Why'd you do it?” he asked.
I looked up at him; he seemed taller that normal. “I just wanted Amy. I knew that I loved her; it was just a matter of time before I had to tell her. I could never find the right time, and I wasted too much time, and Tails took her. I guess it was fair, and now I feel awful about what I did…” I trailed off, and looked down at my feet.
“Yeah,” he said. “I probably would've done the same thing.”
I looked back up at him, but he was gone, and then I felt something touch my shoulder; I looked over at it and I saw an orange hand. I freaked out and jumped up, wheeling around to look at a transparent orange and white fox-boy; and behind him, I saw Shadow standing.
“Sonic, why'd you do it?” the ghost Tails said. “Why'd you kill me? wasn't I your friend? Why did you end my life because of something so stupid as taking Amy from you? You never paid her any attention; every time she stood next to you or talked to you or even just looked at you, you'd turn around and run. She finally got the message and turned to someone else who cared for her; me. I never let you know that I liked her, because I didn't want to ruin our friendship, but I guess caring for her has, hasn't it?” And with that, he disappeared; I looked back at Shadow, and he said: “He has a point, you know. You never did pay Amy any attention and then she ran off with someone else. You poor son of a bitch.” He said. “I'll see you in hell… Chaos Control!” and he was gone.
I just stood there, staring at where he and “Tails” were just standing. I thought about it for a second, and then decided that both of them were right. I started to walk away, but turned back and stood over Tails' grave. “You were right Tails. You were so right…” and a tear dropped from my eye and landed on the gravestone. I turned around and walked toward the back of the ocean. “I'll see you in hell, Shadow. And Tails, I'm sorry, we won't see each other ever again.” And I jumped into the water and drowned myself. But before I died, I saw Amy walk out of the bushes and start bawling; she watched me sink to the bottom of the water, and dropped to her knees when I was gone.
I felt a weird presence, and before I fell to the bottom of the Earth, and into the realms of hell, I saw a familiar fox-boy come up and say: “Sonic, you have a choice: you can die and go to hell or you can tell me that you are really sorry and really mean it and I'll let you live and love. I have that power… so what's your decision?”
“I'd really like to live, but how would Amy react if she saw me appear out of nowhere?”
“I talked to her already in spirit. She said she is willing to take you back if you agreed to apologize to me.” he said.
“Then yes, I am so sorry Tails. I never meant it, I did it out of anger, and now I wish I had never done it. Will you forgive me?”
“Yes, I will,” he said. “Now get back up to the surface and enjoy the rest of your time on the Earth. Because now is not your time…”
And he was gone.
I woke up with a start; That was a weird dream. I thought. I looked over when I felt someone stir next to me; it was Amy! I got up to get a drink of water and I saw some eerie glow in my kitchen. I flicked the lights on and saw the ghost Tails again. “Wow,” I said. “So it wasn't a dream? It was real?”
“Yup,” he said. “And now you can spend all eternity with the girl you love. But if you ever do anything to hurt her or anyone else, except for Eggman, again, you will die immediately, with no negotiations. Understand?”
“Yeah,” I said. “But… nevermind.”
And he vanished and I was left alone standing in the kitchen. A tear dropped into my now empty cup and I stared at the wall, knowing that if I ever hurt Amy ever again, I'd be separated from her for all eternity. I couldn't let that happen.
I walked back upstairs, and climbed back in bed, careful as to not wake her, and fell asleep, thinking about the promise I made to her, Shadow, and Tails…
