How long has this been going on now?

Sonic stood on a cliff overlooking a blackened landscape. Cities that once stood tall and strong against the sky were now decimated. Where trees once stood there was only scrap metal and debris.

Why couldn't I stop them?

He thought back what seemed like years ago, but in truth was only a few days ago. Way, way back, to someone of his speed, and to anyone who has lived through this. Back to the moments before Robotnik struck.

The day seemed like a perfect day. Not too hot, not too cold. Not a cloud in the sky. Kids playing, people just going about their business. Absolutely nothing about that day had suggested what was about to happen.

They hit suddenly, without cause or warning, without relent or remorse. Thousands upon thousands of Egg-bots suddenly stormed Knothole, destroying everything in their path. They killed more than half the population of the city in 5 minutes! Even his and the rest of the Freedom Fighter's efforts were not enough to stop them. In merely days, they had created this. This wretched wasteland!

Why can't I stop them? No matter what I do I just can stop them!

Knuckles walked up behind him, and asked what was wrong. He didn't respond.

I…I failed them…

"Sonic?"

I failed…

"Sonic? Sonic answer me!"

Failed…

"Damn it, Sonic what is wrong with you?!"

Now they point the finger at me…

Knuckles put his hand on his shoulder.

"What is wrong man? You can tell me…"

Because I failed…

"The least you could do is say something Sonic!"

"FAILED!!!"

"Wha --"

Sonic jetted off, screaming.

"Wait! Sonic!!"

Sally and Tails ran up to Knuckles.

"What just happened?" Sally asked.

"I…I don't know! He just jetted off, screaming something about he failed." Knux replied.

"Oh boy, he's really lost it now…. We had better stop him before he hurts himself."

"Shouldn't we just leave him alone?" Tails asked.

"If we did, there would be no telling when he'd come back. Go get the Tornado ready, Tails."

"Ok…" Said Tails, and he started off.

"Its all my fault…I couldn't stop them!" Sonic shouted to himself as he ran aimlessly. "I have to stop them!! I have to! I have to be stronger!"

Tails started up the engine and they flew off after Sonic. After a few minutes, they found him, tearing through a mountain valley.

"Man…I don't think I've ever seen him run so fast!" Tails exclaimed.

"He must be really upset…" Sally said quietly. "I hope he'll be alright…"

"Well? What are we waiting for? Let's get him before he kills himself…" Knuckles said, and they slowly began to descend towards Sonic. As they approached him, they heard him talking to himself.

"I won't fail again! I'll stop them! Nothing will get in my way! I'll be stronger!!"

"What is he talking about?" Tails asked as they continued to descend.

"I will be stronger…I will stop them! I will be stronger-NOW!!!!" Sparks flew from Sonic as he ran, his speed ever increasing.

"What the hell is happening? He's shedding a lot of energy!" Knuckles exclaimed.

"Then they will see…that I can stop them…I have to be stronger!! For Sally, for everyone! I wont let them down, it won't be my fault again!" Sonic screamed as more and more sparks flew from him, his speed growing and growing and growing as he went. Anything he ran into was shattered into pieces, anything that got in his way was destroyed!

"Sonic! Are you all right? It's me, Tails!"

"I wont fail you again! I'll stop them this time! It wont be my fault! I'll be a hero like you want me to! I wont fail you again! I won't! I WON'T!!!!!!" Now sparks were streaming from him, enveloping him. His fur started to glow at the ends of his quills, on the tips of his ears, and at the ends of his legs. Soon this glow enveloped all of him and he glowed with a brilliance only comparable to the glow of a bolt of lightning. After a few seconds, there was a great sound like that of a gunshot and the glow burst off of him, revealing his new form: A blue hedgehog with golden "highlights" at the ends of his quills, the tips of his ears, and the ends of his legs. His eyes shimmered a metallic green, and his power was ever rising.

"What the heck just happened to him?!" Tails exclaimed.

"Almost looks like he's caught somewhere between Sonic and Super Sonic."

After a few minutes of continued running, he dashed up a mountain and stood at the top, overlooking the land as he had been a few moments ago. Tails and the others landed not far from where he was and ran up to him.

"Sonic? Sonic are you alright?" Tails asked as he ran to his side.

Sonic stood silent for a moment, then answered in a strange voice.

>Yea…I guess…<

"Are you sure? What happened to you?" Sally asked, putting her hand on his shoulder.

>I'm not really sure…I feel stronger…more powerful…I must've transformed.<

"The way you did was so…savage…" Tails said.

>Yea it was…That's it! That's what this forms name will be! Savage Sonic!<

"Sounds cool to me." Knux said from behind them. "Now can we get back to camp before the Egg-bots attack without us there?"

"Yea, we better. No telling what would happen if we weren't there to protect them." Tails said. They piled into the Tornado and took off, with Sonic right beneath them.

A few minutes later, they arrived at camp. As luck would have it, a large group of Egg-bots was advancing on the camp as they arrived.

>Stand back guys! I'll take care of this!< Savage said as he raced toward the `bots, spreading his fingers out toward them. >Eat this!!!< He screamed as he launched blast upon blast of energy toward the crowd, resulting in several small explosions, destroying most of the robots. The few remaining Egg-bots were eliminated by the other Freedom Fighters defending the camp.

A few minutes later, everyone was packing up and getting ready to move. The decision had been made to move the camp elsewhere, so as not to be in danger of another attack. Sally and the others had decided that the mountain valley where they had spotted Savage would be perfect for them to set up camp. It would provide ample protection against an attack.

>I'll scout ahead to make sure it's safe. I'll be back in a second!< And with that he jetted off into the valley once again.

As he ran through the valley, scouting for danger, Sonic thought about what had happened to him. He wondered how and why he had transformed. He hadn't used any chaos energy or any rings. All he did was come to the verge of becoming insane. He guessed that that must have unlocked some secret power inside of him, or something to that affect. Whatever had happened, he liked it. In his new form, Savage Sonic could run several times his original speed, and had incredible powers. He wondered if…

Whoosshh! He took off into the air, flying just as fast as he could run! This was incredible! He was almost as powerful as he was in his Super form! This was event better than he thought!

Well, there's mot a sign of danger anywhere. Guess I'll head back to camp and give `em the ok to move out.

With this, he made a large u-turn and flew back towards camp.
