Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ From the Hilltop ❯ Chapter 1 ( Chapter 1 )

It's one of those things you never forget, not that I forgot things often. It was one of those nights when I felt I needed to get away from the yappin' croc and our hyperactive mascot. Always bumbling about useless jobs and missions, even though they usually turn out to be flops. So I'd leave for a little while, maybe an hour, maybe a whole night, I supposed it depended on my mood. The streets were empty, hardly anyone on the sidewalks, the setting was quiet and it didn't fit. Such big cities enveloped in silence never felt right, so I decided to leave the city. The hills overlooking the city seemed more appropriate for the silence that rang in my head.

The hills, the place between the great city and the vast forests, it sort of reminded me of No-man's Land. I sat on the lower hills, not a very nice view of the city from there, I figured, so I climbed higher. Obviously, the higher you got, the more of city you could see, and I wanted the place to look as small to me as possible, I wanted to feel bigger than it was. Now that I think about it, that sounds a little childish. But still, I climbed higher, to the highest hill.

That's where I saw him... His back was facing me, and suddenly I felt like leaving. Something about this person rubbed me the wrong way, but before I could turn away, he'd already noticed me. I remember those glaring crimson eyes. Facing me, the moon was now directly behind him, outlining his dark figure with blue rays. But he said nothing.

I didn't know what to do, but I couldn't just turn away. So I asked him what was on my mind, "What are you doing here?"

I can't remember what tone of voice I used, but I remember his eyes seemed to have widened just a bit. His voice was almost as deep as mine, but strangely darker... His answer wasn't exactly informative either, "I was here first. What's your reason?" Somehow, I knew he wasn't really interested in my answer... And the images began to fade, I couldn't remember much more....

"Hey, Espio! What do you think you're doing!?" I felt a large hand swat at the back of my head, and suddenly I was in a different place. The sky was dark, and there were many people surrounding me.

"Yeah, you can't space out now!" I heard Charmy chime to my right. Loud bangings caught my attention and I looked up to see a gigantic metallic creature. Oh yes, we were at the Fortress.... and this was the Metal Overlord.... "C'mon, we gotta go beat this thing." Vector declared, charging onwards with the rest towards the metal dragon-like monster. But I didn't move. "Wait for me!" Charmy cried, buzzing behind the croc. Still, my legs didn't move, I felt frozen in place. Was I afraid?

"Can you keep up with me?" someone from behind me asked. I recognized the voice instantly, but his words didn't seem to register in my head. He was then beside me, cool and composed. I wasn't looking his way, but I could feel his eyes on me. "Don't fall behind." He dashed ahead without another word, and I was still slightly confused. I watched his back getting farther away, the image of his back to me in the moonlight reappearing. I don't know why, but I didn't want to stare at his back anymore, I didn't want to be left behind.... I think that's when my legs started moving.

I put one foot in front of the other, repeating this motion as fast as I could, my senses were coming back to me. The image of the black hedgehog i n the moonlight slowly faded away for the moment, but I knew I'd never forget it. I didn't get his name. I've never known him, and I might never get the chance. I probably won't even see him again. But it was just one of those things you never forget.
