Chapter 2: Another Stranger

It was around noon on the next day when we rejoin our heroes. No one believed Simon's story, but some were more willing to listen than others. Little did anyone know, they'd soon have another believer among them…

Sonic: Today has been pretty boring…I almost wish someone would break the law!

Scotty: Never say that, Sonic. It's not smart to wish crime on the city.

Sonic: Who's wishing? It's just a comment, that's all.

Scotty: I know, I know…Just keep that stuff to a minimum.

Sonic: Whatever you say…

Tails walked into the room, and approached the hedgehogs.

Tails: We're almost ready to test the new view screen, guys. Come on, Billy's making the final adjustments right now!

The fox led Sonic and Scotty to the lounge room, where a large TV screen with wires and various devices sticking out of it sat on one side of the room. Billy was beside it, working on something in the side of the big monitor. After a moment, he closed a panel that hid what he had finished. The echidna walked up to the others. Sonya, Dr. Arrow, and Simon were also in the room, waiting to see what this thing would do.

Billy: Well, after weeks of intensive labor, I am proud to announce that our project is ready to be tested.

Sonic: O.o

Tails: He says we can try it out.

Scotty: Well, what are we waiting for? Fire it up, Billy!

Billy pointed a remote at the device, and pressed a button. The screen flashed, then it was full of static. After a few moments, the image cleared to reveal Knuckles. The red echidna's face was very big on the screen. Knuckles moved away a bit, and started talking. At that moment, his voice came over the speakers on the TV.

Knuckles: Hey, guys, what's going on?

Billy: Splendid! The communicator is a success!

Sonic: Knuckles?!

Knuckles: <sarcastically> No, I'm the Easter bunny.

Scotty: Well, I bet this thing will be useful.

Sonic: Since when is talking to Knuckles useful?

Knuckles: Since forever. Well, Billy, Tails, Congratulations. It seems your little two-way TV thing works.

Billy: It would appear to be so.

Tails: Now, if we could just get one to Shadow…

Simon: I could fly it there!

Scotty: Yeah, but then what? It wouldn't be easy for you to get one from the airport to Shadow's house, let alone explain it to him.

Simon: I guess so…

Tails: I could help him.

Simon: Really? You mean it?

Tails: Sure, why not?

Sonic: I don't know…It might be dangerous.

Scotty: I wouldn't worry too much. Our sidekicks can hold their own if things get rough.

Tails: Sidekick?

Scotty: No offense, Tails. Or Simon.

Tails: Uh…None taken…I think…

Sonic: You're probably right, Scott.

Simon: The we can go?

Scotty: It looks that way.

Simon: Yay!!

Everyone helped load another communicator device onto a large cargo helicopter that had been `donated' by Robotnik. Scotty never quite approved of taking the helicopter from the scientist, but the others had more or less convinced him that Robotnik deserved it and more.

Tails: I checked everything, and we're ready to go!

Sonya: <kneeling, hands on Simon's shoulders> Simon, be careful, and stay with Tails.

Simon: Don't worry, I will!

Sonya: <stands up> And Tails, take care of Simon for us.

Tails: No problem.

Sonic: Well, buddy, it looks like you get to take the lead for a while. You'll be in my shoes!

Tails: But then what would you wear?

Sonic: You know what I mean.

Tails: Of course, Sonic. Well, Simon, let's go!

Billy: I hope your journey will lack unfortunate situations.

Dr. Arrow: Good luck to both of you. Don't waste time getting back; Christmas is almost here.

Tails: We'll be back before you know it. Don't go on any adventures while I'm gone, Sonic!

Sonic: I won't, as long as you promise not to become Shadow's sidekick.

Tails: Deal.

Tails and Simon climbed into the helicopter, and waved down at everyone as they took off. Everyone waved back at them, and watched the helicopter fly away.

Scotty: I hope they'll be all right.

Sonic: Don't worry, they'll be fine. Tails is growing up fast, and he'll take care of things if something does happen. I'm just worried that Shadow won't listen to them.

Scotty: Heh, yeah, I guess you're right. Shadow can be more stubborn than Knuckles when he wants to be.

Billy: It amazes me that you are all still on friendly terms with each other, despite your insults.

Dr. Arrow: It might have to do with the fact that the recipient almost never knows of the insult.

Billy: Perhaps, but they still antagonize each other. That would imply that they are not friends.

Dr. Arrow: They're not serious, young one.

Billy: I am well aware of that, doctor, but it still seems odd to me.

In the helicopter…

Tails: Well, we're underway.

Simon: Our heading looks good…fuel is nominal…This is gonna be fun!

Tails: I've always wondered what it would be like if Sonic and I switched roles.

Simon: Who baked rolls?

Tails: <chuckles> I mean, what if we switched places? You know, I'd be the leader, and he'd be the sidekick.

Simon: Oh.

Tails: You kinda look like a young version of Sonic…and it seems like I'm the leader for once…so maybe I'll get a chance to find out.

Simon: So I'm your sidekick?

Tails: I guess you could say that…at least, while we're on this trip anyway…

Simon: Just don't kick me hard, okay?

Tails: <chuckles again> Don't worry, I won't kick you at all.

Simon: Thanks.

The helicopter flew off toward Shadow's home on the other side of the country. Back at the base, things were calm for quite a while, and Sonic and Scotty were determined to wear each other out with racing. Billy helped Dr. Arrow with his secret project, which only they knew about. Sonya went shopping, and things were fairly uneventful. After dark, however, the day's first alarm went off. Sonic and Scotty rushed toward the origin of the problem.

Sonic: <running> It's about time something happened!

Scotty: <also running> What did I tell you about those comments?

Sonic: Relax, I'm sorry. Now let's do this!

This time, a department store had been robbed, and several getaway vehicles were seen leaving the scene. The two hedgehogs easily caught up with them, and discovered that they were using two armored vans and three sports cars to flee. Each of the cars had sunroofs, out of each of which stood a person with a machine gun. They aimed at the hedgehogs, and fired. Fortunately, they missed.

Sonic: These guys mean business!

Scotty: Let's show `em that we do too!

Sonic used a spin attack on the engine of one of the cars, disabling it. By now, the police were close behind, and the chase found its way to one of the highways. The police took care of the stopped car, and its passengers.

Scotty: Nice one, Sonic! Now it's my turn!

Scotty took out his emerald sword, and cut the door off of one of the cars. He jumped into it, and subdued the driver, stopping the car. He quickly jumped out and caught up with Sonic.

Sonic: One more left!

Scotty: Let's take him out!

They ran up on each side of the remaining car, sandwiching it between them. Sonic knocked on the driver's window…

Sonic: Guess what! You lose!

This distracted the vehicle's occupants long enough for Scotty to slice off the passenger door and and shove his emerald sword into the steering column, deploying the driver side airbag. The last car stopped as The hedgehogs hurried to catch the armored vans which held the stolen merchandise.

Sonic: Stopping those is gonna be tricky…

Scotty: We'll have to get lucky, I guess!

They did get lucky, since almost immediately after their conversation, the rear-left tire of one of the vans exploded, causing the vehicle to crash into the van next to it. Both vehicles were badly damaged, and sat motionless on the road after a spectacular crash. The hedgehogs and the police surrounded the vans, and inspected the site.

Sonic: I guess we got lucky…

Scotty: No, that couldn't be right…Something caused that tire to burst.

Sonic: If you say so…Well, I'm gonna head back. I'll see you later, Scott.

Sonic ran off toward the base, as Scotty slowly began to follow him.

Scotty: <thinking> Sonic was the one that wanted something to happen…but he seemed anxious to leave…I wonder why…

Scotty picked up speed, and eventually broke into a dead run toward the city. He ran up the first building he came to, and started traveling along the rooftops. Something unusual caught his eye, and he stopped. He stared at what looked like the silhouette of a hedgehog standing on the edge of a nearby rooftop. Its back was to him, and something was different about it…

Scotty: S-Sonic?

The green hedgehog called out tentatively. He didn't get a response, so he called again…

Scotty: Sonic, is that you?

Several seconds passed. The figure just stood there, looking up at the moon, which was low in the sky. Suddenly, the figure moved, turning back to look at him. Scotty saw two glowing red eyes stare back at him. They were rectangular in shape, standing vertically. Each had a black pupil in the middle.

Scotty: <to self> What the?

The figure turned back to its previous direction, and stepped off the edge. It fell quickly, disappearing from sight. Scotty quickly made his way to where it had just been, but saw nothing when he looked down at the ground far below.

Scotty: I might owe Simon an apology…

Scotty returned to the base, where he found Sonic and the others.

Scotty: You'll never guess what happened on the way back.

Sonya: <jokingly> Did you see another ghost?

Scotty: Actually…I think I did…

What's the deal with these ghosts?
