Ch. 5

Michael was given four hours so that the drink could completely filter out of his system before Nick continued with Michael's training. After the four hours had ended, Nick led Michael back into the target area. Thsi time, Michael was much more observant and capable of hitting the targets.

"Now, this next test will determine how good your relexes are in the heat of a battle! While you are shooting the targets, other targets will rise from the floor for about half a second! You must not only shoot these targets, but also the targets infront of you...if you can hit 75% of all the targets, you will have passed this third test! Ready?! Begin!!!" Nick pulled a switch from the other side of the glass and watched Michael go to work on the targets.

Michael was shooting the plain targets with ease, and it wasn't until Nick started the floor targets that Michael showed some significant difficulty.

Although they were just targets, Michael felt that they were people with actual guns in their hands, and each time he missed a target, he felt like he got shot by that target.

<Buzz>

"What happened?! You were doing so good till those floor targets came up!" Nick saw Michael's nervousness, which was to be expected from a rookie with guns.

"Sorry...I just...I got disoriented when those floor targets appeared...I'll do better next time..." Michael apologized.

"well, hate to burst your bubble, this test is over! You hit 60% of the targets: not a very good ratio, even for a rookie such as yourself...I'm afraid this test is a failure for you..." Nick put an "X" on the square labeled "Multiple enemies" and moved on to the next test.

"Man..." Michael started pouting some, realizing that he would never beable to save Tikal at this rate.

"Don't you worry now! This next test is much easier then the previous one, its a test of accuracy! There will be one target that will move around the practice area slowly. You must hit the bulls-eye or the area just outside the bulls-eye to maintain 100% accuracy! You must have an accuracy rating of at least 90% to pass this test!" Nick pulled yet another lever from the control room and the fifth test began for Michael.

Michael was firing a pistol, and it had a laser-sight, but Michael didn't know what that was (he's a rookie at this) and got slightly distracted by it...he even tried to fire at the beam, but the beam followed his gun movements.

It dawned on Michael that this thing was the sight for the gun, and he got back on track, barle yreaching the 90% mark.

"Don't know why you were all jumpy in there, did you understand what to do?" Nick was hoping Michael didn't answer that question.

"That laser-sight confused me a bit, but now I see that its the "accuracy" factor!" Michael saw Nick put a "o" on the square labeled "Accuracy testing for Dummies"

"Alright...after five tests you have passed four and failed just one...your next test is my personal favorite!" Nick said as he pulled out a much bigger gun and handed it to Michael, who was all bug-eyed after he saw the size of the gun. "Your next test is a test on handling weapons with the "throwback!" Nick took the gun from Michael and handed him a gun that was a bit longer and bigger then the pistol he had earlier, but saw that it had no handles and had two barrels instead of one.

"Doesn't look that difficult to me..." Michael said confidently.

"Oh, but the thing is: this isn't no ordinary gun! No, this is a gun called the "shotgun!" Nick proudly said.

"What makes it so special?" Michael asked.

"I'm very glad you asked! This weapon, unlike many others, must be held in a specific way! If you hold it wrong, then when you fire the weapon, the "throwback" factor could snap your shoulderblade in half!!" Nick said with some laughter.

"I...I could hurt myslef just...firing the weapon?!" Michael was shaking now.

"Yes, you could very well hurt yourself firing that weapon! The trick is to master how to hold it! Once you master that, the rest is as easy as a knife through butter!" Nick took the gun from Michael and displayed the proper position of how to hold it. Nick went into the target room and fired a single shot. The intensity of the shot was deafiening to Michael's ears, but saw that Nick wasn't thrownback by the force of the blast.

"Cool..." Michael said smoothly.

"Now, this is what will happen if you hold it right! When you hold it right, the force will not go into your shoulder, but harmlessly into nothing, therefore you can do the shot again, with proer reloading of course!" Nick showed Michael how to reload the gun and handed it back to him to try out.

"It...its my turn?" Michael said nervously.

"Go ahead! When you master this, then you will understand the meaning of "being kind to the gun", trust me! If you can hit that target 20 yards away with one shot, then you will have passed the test!" Nick said happily as he closed the glass door and Michael's sixth tes began.

"Okay! Hold it right...steady...and...fire!" Michael said to himself, as he fired a shot from the shotgun, and the force, because Michael hadn't held it completely correct, threw him back about 10 yards.

"Whoa!!" Nick went into the room to make sure Michael was ok, since he knew how bad that must've hurt him. He was just hoping Michael hadn't snapped his shoulder.

"Man...my ass hurts, now!" Michael got back up, showing no problems with his shoulder area, which made Nick very relieved.

"Whew...apparently, you hit nthe target, but you held it the wrong way...we'll have to go back to this test later..." Nick placed a "?" on the square labeled "Shotgun: the Beauty of it!"

"Well, one more test and this'll do it for today, Michael!" Nick pulled one more lever, this time revealing numerous targets stationed on the floor. "You are about to experience one of the coolest tests we can offer! This test will determine your eye, accuracy and carefulness! I want you to hit all of the red targets while avoiding the blue ones! The red targets are like men with guns that are aiming at you! The blue ones are like the very girl you are trying to save..." Nick said.

That mentioning of the blue targets really made something click in Michael's head, he pictured Tikal in every blue target and the mystery kidnapper in the red targets. He shot perfectly, with not a single blkue target being shot at.

"Perfect!!! Wow!! I didn't know you were so good at carefulness with a weapon!" Nick gave Michael a high-five.

"Well, if you picture the right things in each target, you'll realize what needs to be done..." Michael said with a tear in his eye.

Nick knew Michael must've been picturing Tikal in the blue and this kidnapper in the red, he saw it in his eyes and the way he shot.

"She must mean a lot to you, huh?" Nick said comfortably.

"She's everything to me...I need to save her before she.......she......." Michael broke down before he could finish that sentence and was led out of the room by Nick. Even Nick had a soft spot for ailing people, and he couldn't stand seeing Michael this upset.

<Meanwhile, at the Mystic Sancutary>

"When is she going to wake up, master?"

"Not for another day or two...I don't know why that fool is taking so long with finding her...I need those shoes to complete the metamorphosis!!"

"Just calm down, master! He'll be here!! I know it!!!"

"Well, he better get here! If he doesn't I'm afraid his little lover girl will cease to exist!!"
