Chapter 4

The Present I rested in the glass imprisonment, the tiniest of smiles appearing on my blood moistened lips. I had sliced my bottom lip with my sharp incisors, enjoying the comforting warmth of my own blood, cherishing its unique smell, its coppery sweet taste, and its life giving qualities. It was amazing to me; without the crimson liquid there would be no life in any person, human or animal. All one had to do was drain something of its blood and that being's life would be severed; their voice silenced forevermore. That is all it would take and that's all it DID take to kill the only person that I loved-truly loved. I can still see her dying in my head-her breath coming out in ragged gasps as she looked at me, her blood spurting out her body in frequent bursts. She said her last words and then there was silence. Silence… Damn that silence! How could she just lay there and die on me! Didn't she know that it would hurt me to see her die like that? Wait a minute, I'm getting angry with the wrong person; the people I should be irate with are the workers at GUN who turned my life upside down. I should be mad at those killers who took everything I loved away from me!

"Speak of the devil." I thought out loud as I watched a GUN soldier slowly approach the tube, gun by his side, smiling at me with the most devious of smiles.

"Well aren't you a cute little fella'?" he said slowly, tapping the glass with his gloved index finger. "What's your name?"

At that moment, everything that I was feeling came out of me. My emotions burst forth in a fit of rage, satisfying me and scaring the living daylights out of the soldier in the camouflage suit.

"LEAVE ME ALONE! GET OUT OF HERE! I DON'T WANT TO SEE ANY OF YOU BASTARDS! GET OUT! GET OUT! GET OUT!" I swung my tired arms wildly in a circular motion, my hands and my head banging up against the glass as I did so. Warm blood seeped quickly from my skull, stinging my similarly colored eyes and filling my mouth with its delicious taste. I ceased all motion, taking a minute just to savor the taste of it, licking my swollen lips hungrily.

"You're insane!" the man whispered, backing away quickly, a look of pure horror on his soiled face.

"Crazy?!" I cried, laughing manically. "I'm not crazy right now but I will be if you don't leave me the hell alone!" To make my threat clear, I pressed my bloodied right hand up against the glass, letting it slide down, leaving a crimson smear in its wake. With my other hand I wrote the word `KILL' in the smear and drew a smiley face, grinning and chortling as I did so. The soldier backed away some more then turned around and ran, screaming for his captain. With an amused smirk I slid down in the tube and sat cross legged, the screaming pain in my head causing me to slowly lose consciousness…

The Past: December 2, 1945

"Shadow! Shadow! Shadow!" Maria screamed in my ear, tugging at it harshly with stubby little fingers. "Wake up! I wanna play tea party!"

"Play what?" I shuddered and sat up, looking at her. She carried Mr. Bon Bon and a huge pink plastic suitcase in her tiny little left hand. A pink straw hat with purple and silver plumes was sitting atop her head adorned with fuchsia glitter. Magenta lipstick was smeared around her pouting mouth, giving her the appearance of a clown gone mad.

"Tea party!" She jumped on the gurney, making it sway a little due to her weight impacting the hard steel. With a huge grin she plopped the teddy bear in my lap (much to my delight) and opened the suitcase, revealing 3 small cups, plates, and one big teapot inside. Like the suitcase, the plastic dinnerware was all pink, much to my disgust. I always thought that pink was an unappealing color; too bad Maria was covered in the disgusting hue. Suddenly, I felt something hard being fitted onto my head by tiny hands. I looked up and saw the wide brim of a large blue hat. Maria dug into the pocked of the white dress she was wearing and pulled out a mirror, shining it in my face. I stared at my reflection, dumbfounded. A huge blue straw hat was on my head, pinning down my ears with its hard brim. A light blue ribbon stretched across the middle of it, adding to the mortifying sight.

"Ah, you look so pwetty Shadow. Gwandpa would love to see this!" the girl squealed happily, setting the mirror down and pulling out a teacup. "Would youlike some tea?"

I looked all around her plastic tea set, noticing that there was no tea in sight. "What tea?"

"It's invisible, you can't see it."

"Oh." I secretly knew there was no tea; this was one of those make-believe things that the Professor was telling me about.

As if on cue, I heard the Professor scream, "MARIA! WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!" I looked up at the entrance to the lab, watching the old man strut in like he was boss, which he was. "Didn't I tell you not to bother the experiment?"

"Oh she's no bother Professor." I said sweetly. "We were just about to have a tea party."

"Did I tell you to speak?!"

"No Professor." My head hung low as I removed the hat and gave it back to Maria, who was now teary eyed and pouting.

"Gwandpa! We were just having fun! Shadow and I are fwiends now!"

"Friends?! You cannot be friends with it! It is an experiment and you are a human being! Those two don't mix! Now gather you things and get out of here before I warm your bottom!"

"I hate you!" the child screamed savagely, wrapping her tiny arms around my torso. She nuzzled her head against the white tuft of fur on my chest for a second, her fervid tears drenching the black fur below it. She finally released me and jumped off the gurney, running towards the laboratory entrance. Before she left out of the door, however, she looked into my eyes and said four words that I will never forget: "I wuv you Shadow."
