Chapter Two
"Come on man, answer your phone for once!" the blue hedgehog spoke loudly to himself while tapping his foot.
"Oh Sonic, would you give it a rest already? His phone probably doesn't even work anymore!" Amy shouted from the kitchen. "It's not like he'd want to come anyways, you guys weren't really the best of friends remember?"
Sonic sighed and hit the end button on the phone, gently placing it back into its cradle to charge. "No, but we were starting to be at least friendly with each other. It's just weird we haven't heard from him in such a long time."
He heard Amy turn on the oven timer with a shrill beep. Then she emerged from the kitchen. "That's true, but maybe he just doesn't want to be bothered. He never answers his phone, and besides, at least everyone else can come. Tails called earlier, who heard from Cream, who heard from Blaze, who heard from Silver who heard from Shadow who heard from Tikal who heard from…."
Sonic crept up behind her and tackled her, thus effectively shutting her up.
"SONIC!"
He laughed and helped her up. "Sorry Amy, you were starting to ramble."
She huffed while crossing her arms and turning her nose up at him. "I was not rambling." Her face broke out in a wide grin. "Anyways, they all said that they could come to the party."
Sonic looked at her and smiled. "That's great! " He then sheepishly put his arm behind his head and smiled nervously, "now I really want to go get some chili dogs, I'm starving!"
Amy uncrossed her arms and walked over to Sonic, enveloping him in a hug. "Alright handsome, just be back before five, the party starts at six and I don't want you to be late. It is after all, our party," she smirked at the wide-eyed look on his face and kissed him on the cheek while starting to walk away, "Well, off you go then."
Sonic grabbed her by her arm and pulled her to his chest. "Don't worry, I won't be long," he kissed her sweetly then took off.
Amy watched the blue blur fly out the door and smiled. Tonight they were throwing a party to announce their engagement. It only took Amy over three years of pursuing the hedgehog to get him to finally admit he felt the same for her as she did him. These past months of peace really sped him along, as no big crisis jumped in the way of spending time together.
She slowly shut the front door and made her way back into the kitchen of their small home. The next couple hours would be spent cooking up a storm for their guests as well as decorating the living room. Everything had to be perfect, as she had been waiting a long time for this moment. However, as she was stirring the mixture for brownies, she couldn't help but recall the look on Sonic's face as he hung up the phone…he seemed really worried. That wouldn't do. Maybe having the red Echidna attend their party really did matter to him.
Amy looked to the phone in the kitchen before making up her mind. She stopped stirring and wiped her hands on her apron before picking up the phone and dialing a number she hadn't used in awhile.
Once again it rang and rang and rang until finally clicking off without a prompt to leave a voicemail. Maybe Knuckles was too stupid to learn how to set one up.
The pink hedgehog stood for a moment, staring at the phone, wondering how she should proceed next. If she couldn't contact him directly, maybe she could call someone who could.
A light bulb went off in her head and she soon found her self rapidly dialing another number that hadn't been used in quite some time.
It rang once, twice…. "Rouge speaking."
Amy smirked, "Hey Rouge how's it going?"
"Amy? I haven't heard from you in a long time. Is everything alright?"
"Yes, everything is great actually…listen, Sonic and I are throwing a party tonight, a bit of celebration for peaceful times, and I was wondering if you were free to come?"
It was silent on the end of the phone for a few moments.
"Yeah, I'm free, just tell me when it is, if you want me to bring anything and I'll be there."
"Great! It's at 6, and feel free to bring whatever you're best at cooking."
"Alright, sounds good."
Amy nervously bit her bottom lip and stared down at her feet. "Um, Rouge, there is one more thing…." She paused before finding the courage to continue. "All of us are kinda worried about, you know who, our friendly Gilligan who's been M.I.A. for quite some time, and I was wondering if you could try and…"
She was abruptly cut off.
"Um, Amy? You do know I'm with Shadow now right? There's a reason I haven't contacted him at all in the past three years..."
Not that I've been counting or anything.
Amy sighed. "I know, but no one else can reach him...it's like he's disappeared from existence. I can't tell you how many times we've tried to get him to come down off that island over the years, and every time we try he never answers his phone."
Rouge considered this. "Well, maybe his phone just doesn't get a signal up there? Has anyone tried actually visiting him?"
Amy rolled her eyes. Of course they had tried. She remembered when Sonic and tails...wait...that was just a plan, they never actually made it to the island...there was talk of going, but no actual trip had been made. Tails continuously said he would try to bring them there, but with his numerous injuries from being a mechanic, and newfound relationship with Cream, he had either been too busy or hurt to make the trip, and since no one else could fly or fly a plane, the trip to the island was forever put on hold. Everyone had been making excuses it seemed, though it wasn't as if Knuckles was very fun to visit to begin with... with him and his, "Stay away from my emerald!" tough guy act.
Rouge listened to Amy's silence for a moment before making a decision. "I'll tell ya what, I'll get Shadow to chaos control there, and he'll drag the knucklehead kicking and screaming just for tonight, deal?" Rouge offered while rolling her eyes and tapping her foot. She really wasn't looking forward to this. Even though three years had passed since she had any contact with the red echidna, Rouge still felt a strange fluttering in her stomach when she thought about him. No, not good at all.
Amy exhaled the breath she didn't realize she had been holding. "That would be awesome Rouge, thank you thank you thank you for doing this! See you tonight!" She quickly hung up the phone, not wanting to give the bat time to change her mind.
Rouge lowered the phone from her face and stared at it. "Yeah, your welcome..."
She sighed while dialing a number she knew without looking at her contact list. Cradling the phone between her shoulder and cheek, she began inspecting her nails while it rang.
"Rouge?" Shadow's smooth voice came through the line.
"Hey hun, I have a favor to ask of you," she began in a sultry voice though was quickly cut off before she could say anymore.
"Would this favor have anything at all to do with a certain red echidna?"
Rouge's eyes widened. "Um, actually...yes?"
She heard Shadow chuckling. "I figured. I just got off the phone with Sonic. He asked me to go drag his royal guardianship off his throne, even if he kicked and screamed his head off the entire way."
Rouge laughed. "Yeah, I just got off the phone with Amy...I kinda told her you'd do just that."
He sighed into the phone. "I guess I have no choice then. I'll see you at Sonic and Amy's later Rouge, wish me good luck."
"I'd wish you good luck, but I don't think you need it, you got this."
"Thanks babe, see you later, I love you."
Rouge hesitated before responding, "Yeah, you too, later." With that she pressed end on the phone and fell back onto her couch, dramatically covering her eyes with the back of her hand. Meanwhile, thoughts she had been trying to erase from her mind came crashing back.
Her and Shadow had been dating for the past five months, though he had been pursuing her way longer than that. She finally decided to give him a try when her twenty-third birthday came and went. She decided she wasn't getting any younger, and sitting around waiting for someone that didn't even try to contact you wasn't the greatest way to live. She actually called Shadow up that day and told him yes. Less than five seconds later he showed up in her living room.
Shadow was a very attentive boyfriend, always there when she needed him, willing to help her out when she had problems...a great lover...it was just...not the same. Memories of a night she'd rather forget overcame her.
Three years, and she could still remember every detail perfectly. The way he blushed when she touched his arm, his masculine scent, those strong arms holding her close, the feel of his lips on hers, how they fit so perfectly together...but most of all, the sound of her heart breaking while he walked away after she spilled her heart out...
She told him she loved him. He told her she would never find happiness with him; that his body and soul were attached to Angel Island, forever protecting the Master Emerald. Through the loud pounding in her ears of her heart splitting in two, she faintly heard him telling her to try and move on. To find someone that could take care of her the way she deserved.
Before she could stop it, a tear fell down her cheek, just one, as she was too proud to let anymore fall. That's when she heard him sigh and pull her in close, wrapping his muscular arms around her tightly as he kissed her with as much passion he could, wanting to say all he couldn't say with his touch before he had to say goodbye. From that kiss, she knew he loved her too, which made everything that much more difficult. He wasn't even giving them a chance.
That was one of the worst nights of her life, and Rouge had many.
