Chapter 3
Shadow,
Please come by my house tonight. We need to talk.
Sonikku
My hands trembled as I read the note for the millionth time that night, totally unbeknownst to the fact that I was tearing the rather flimsy sheet of paper just by doing so. The sheet of notebook paper had appeared at my doorstep this morning wrapped in a red rose dripping with fresh dew. When I had first read it I had the notion to throw it away but something stopped me. It was my heart, yet again, telling me that he didn't mean what he said or that he's changed his ways and he's a new man. Now I had a decision to make; should I listen to my heart once more or should I give him one last chance even though my heart's decisions have caused me total heartbreak in the past?
(Tense change! {present to past})
Curses directed at myself flew through my mind as I pushed through the dense entanglement of bushes that were in front of the worn path which led to my counterpart's shabby abode. Like a fool I had decided to go back there with hopes of reconciliation, maybe he had changed. Maybe-just maybe we could work things out. Hopefully…
Leaves crunched loudly under my feet as I walked, alerting animals of my arrival in their territory. I was not afraid of an animal attack though; the animals understood that I had not come to bother them. Besides, they would not harm one of their own…
The path loomed out before me like a silent beacon as I approached it silently, taking time to make sure that I did not make too much unneeded noise. Before I could arrive at my destination, however, I saw two children move in front of it, smiling faces illuminated easily in the incandescent moonlight. Recognition hit me like a lightning bolt when I realized who they were. Miles Prower and Cream the Rabbit, blocking the only way to get to Sonic's house without coming out of the forest looking like a cactus plant. As if on instinct I tired to move in the shadows but they had already seen me. Dammit! Had they already found out?!
"Hello there Shadow!" the kitsune called out to me, azure eyes glittering with utter delight. He was dressed in a crisp white button-down shirt and black slacks held up with suspenders. I slowly walked over to them, head down, eyes downcast, realizing that I was caught in the act. No one could have ever imagined how surprised I was when the cream colored rabbit handed me a red rose identical to the one that was at my door earlier. I looked at them both, stunned.
"Follow the lights in the forest. They will take you to the one you love!" The words poured forth from Cream's lips as smooth as silk. I could feel my jaw hit the ground.
"You know?"
Tails' smile widened. "Yeah, we knew for a long time! We knew that something was going on between you two before Sonic told us a couple of days ago.
"He told you?!" I managed to choke out, palms sweaty, face draining of all color.
"He sure did Mr. Shadow!"
"And I guess he put you up to this huh?"
"Um, yeah. Who else would have asked us to do this for them? Now you must get going! Just follow the lights. Basically, just follow the path. It'll lead you somewhere special."
Somehow, I managed to nod. "Ok, I bid you farewell twin tailed fox and cream colored rabbit!"
"Have a good time Mr. Shadow!" Cream exclaimed, her mischievous tone eliciting a chuckle out of me as I understood what she meant.
"Believe me, I will…"
He did this… for me? My mind trailed with bizarre thoughts as I traveled along the path, looking around at the dense forest that was illuminated by flashlights hanging on tiny strings from sturdy tree limbs. Sure, this was a tacky idea but I had to admit, it was quite romantic! Crickets chirped loudly in the darkness, their unique sonatas swirling around me in a soothing, yet somewhat annoying fashion. I couldn't help smiling to myself; he had changed! Why else would he have told Tails and Cream that we were together?
Somehow, I managed to come to the end of the trail in one happy, yet somewhat giddy piece. I looked up towards the clearing, expecting to see Sonic's house but seeing a vivid pair of violet eyes and a manic fanged grin instead
"Knuckles?"
"Well hello there Shadow! Damn, I never thought you would show up!"
His grin became wider. "Um, Little Boy Blue wanted me to tell you to follow those light thingies on the poles to the lake."
"The lake?"
"Yeah, the lake. He's got it all hooked up over there and shit. You're gonna love it." The echidna began to fiddle with his dreadlocks, twisting and untwisting them with his gloved fingers.
"Um, thank you Knuckles for coming down from your island to tell me this."
"No problem Shads but that damn blue hedgehog owes me… Now you getter get going, Sonic's been waitin' on ya' for a long time…"
Once again I began to follow the lights towards the lake, which was about 50 feet behind Sonic's small house. It was a small lake with shallow water that reflected both the sunlight and moonlight in its nocturnal and diurnal cycles. Small remnants of rotting leaves and twigs floated on the surface but you could still see the murky bottom on account of the clear water.
Sonic's house was dark and almost hidden from my view in the muggy darkness that seemed to envelop you in its foggy presence. As I approached the lake I started to hear a large ruckus, as if someone were trying to quickly get things in order for someone's immediate arrival.
"Dammit!" I heard the hedgehog curse loudly as I heard something shatter. Sensing that I should stop him before he hurt himself or someone else I quickly ran up to the lake, sweeping away the thick curtain of gray moss that blocked my sight of the scene that was taking place before me.
"Shadow!" Sonic whirled around, holding shards of a broken plate in his ungloved hands. He was dressed in what looked like a two piece red jumpsuit with long sleeves and pant legs that draped over his bare feet. It was quite strange that he would be barefoot in such a rugged terrain with jagged rocks and upturned roots poking up from the moist soil.
"Um, hello there Sonic." I muttered softly, coming down with a sudden case of shyness. The feeling of awkwardness was mutual, as I could see. Sonic's slender fingers were unusually pale and sweaty as he twiddled his thumbs quickly and smiled nervously at me.
"Hi!" He squeaked. "Um, thank you for coming. I'm glad that you came."
I looked down at the ground. "Yeah, I am too."
We remained that way for a couple of minutes, staying in the same position and not meeting each other's eyes. Finally, Sonic broke the silence, throwing the shattered plate into the shallow lake and walking up to me slowly with a smile on his face.
"Come with me."
Um, I know that this is an awkward place to end this chapter but I ran out of ideas. I have written more to this chapter but it is only a couple more paragraphs. Besides, I am a short chapter girl and this was getting a bit long for my tastes…
