Well, the fans have voted in favor of the movie with Knuckles, so here it is. Don't worry though, the second series should come around after this. It's really good to be back though. Things are getting a bit slower since I don't write in the bus anymore, but I find time at work (got 2 pages done there). My corner store rocks: I'm syndicated and I don't have that much work to do (but what I do, I do well). Moreover, I don't know what happened with my beta reader so I had to do the job myself. Kevian, wherefore art thou?

Sorry, no sex. I felt it was out of place at this early stage. You do not need to worry though, because there will be some in the next chapter. On that subject, I'm submitting a new poll to you. This time, I'm asking how the movie should end. I have my personnel idea, but I'll still let the public decide. After all, for whom am I writing for if not for you? Chapter 1

Red Rain

The red echidna had reached the edge… again. Before him was only clouds on a blue sky, moving slowly. Knuckles had finished his patrol of the floating island for the forth… fifth time that day. He knew every corner, tree, rock, shortcut and shortercut of his motherland. He knew of all the good hiding places to spy, bushes, caverns, the deserted Echidnapolis. But none of that mattered, for he was alone. He was alone and it hurt.

Of course, there were small unintelligent animals as well as bigger beasts, but none could be a friend for Knuckles, a true friend with whom he could chat. He would of liked that, talk like when he was younger, with his mentor. Young, he had been entrusted with a very important task: to defend the floating island and to protect the chaos emeralds against all invaders, at all cost. He was a guardian, the last of a great legacy of guardians.

The young red echidna jumped from tree to tree, using his gliding ability to reach further, finally arriving at his favorite lake, in the middle of the forest. Of course, the whole island was silent but this place was different to him somehow. It was calm, as if silence had it's place here and nowhere else. His personal paradise.

Here, Knuckles often thought about his family and friends. Sometimes, he even cried. Elsewhere, he had to be strong for the invisible eyes of the non-present spectators but here, the lake shielded him from "them", permitting Knuckles to be Knuckles, to reveal what he truly was. A coward? A weak? A cry-baby? No, a living fur with emotions and feelings, all guardian he was.

Lost in thought, he didn't hear the surge of power at the other end of the island. He did however feel it as he was projected back against a tree by the increase of speed of the island. Dazed for a few moments, he quickly regained his composure, searching for a solution to the still dark problem. The answer came to him the instant later: the chaos emeralds. They kept the island soaring over everything and so controlled it's speed as well. Knuckles got back up and dashed towards the secret location where their power was converted to the island's needs.

Travel against the velocity of the island was hard. Each jump menaced to throw Knuckles off the island, but he did not despair and finally, he reached the hidden cave, close to Echidnapolis. Usually he'd be scanned to make sure he was allowed access, but the power surge seemed to have broken the scanner as well. The thought made the red echidna double his efforts to reach the chamber.

And finally reach it he did and the sight before him was critical as expected. The device was glowing multiple colors and rainbow lightning was being projected by the chaos emeralds. His task as a guardian didn't include learning how to repair this and so he had no way of preventing the menace. The other solution? To remove the emeralds from their sockets, therefore removing the only source of energy it had.

He knew what would happen then. The island would slow down, finally falling from the skies, probably crushing many Mobians beneath it or drowning them if he hit the sea. However, he also knew that if the machine exploded with the emeralds still attached, it could take out as much as half the planet.

He had no choice. Take the jewels and run like hell to jump off. His mind set, Knuckles slowly approached the chaotic device. It, however, had other plans and so a burst of electricity hit Knuckles directly in the stomach. The shock was so intense that it projected him out of the cavern, hitting many walls on his way and being projected into the night. Before losing consciousness, the young guardian's last thought was "I have failed."

Meanwhile, on the surface of Mobius, in a small village hidden by a great forest slept a handful of furs, the Freedom Fighters. Had it not been night, surely they would have been alerted by a gigantic shadow hastily passing over them.

Guarding the villagers, scouting the surroundings, a dog was the only witness to a strange sound coming from overhead. His sight was blocked by trees and branches however and a moment later, the forest returned to it's original silent self. The scout noted the time in a notebook and resumed his patrol, making nothing more of the event.

He did make more however of the corpse he found in the bushes 20 minutes later. Trying to calm his growing panic, the dog checked the body's pulse… weak, but he was still alive. In normal circumstances he knew not to move the body, only these were extreme measures and he had no choice, lest he'd risk the life of the reddish stranger even more.

Upon arrival in Knothole, he screamed for a medic, not caring for the sleep of his companions. Obviously, they would understand his gesture. Indeed, concerned faces started to exit their homes to see what all the commotion was about, princess Sally, Sonic and Tails in front as well as the medic, a red and black wolf named Blackenthor.

-Who is this man, asked the medic immediately.

-I don't know. I found him unconscious in the forest while I was doing my patrol.

The wolf kneeled and checked the patient's pulse. It was slow, but he couldn't tell if they were losing him. He indicated to the dog to bring him to the medical ward. Sonic, Tails and Sally tagged along, Sally adding to the others to return to sleep. After the scout deposed the wounded, Sally told him he could return to his duties. The dog gave the body one last look and left, promising to get news after his shift.

-So, Sal', who do you think he is?

-Hmm..., said Sally, lost in thought. He looks like an echidna... with a ring around his neck. Could he be one of the legendary guardians from the floating island?

-Guardians, ask Sonic. Floating island? I thought all of those were myths. I mean, could they have remained hidden for so long?

-It's possible, in theory.

-What's the floating island, asked Tails?

-The floating island is the land of the echidna civilization. It is said they harnessed the power of chaos emeralds, the powerful gems that could even surpass Sonic's rings in power. By using this energy, the managed to make their city Echidnapolis, fly over Mobius and hidden from our eyes. But like Sonic said, I thought it was only a myth.

-It's no myth, it's my homeland.

The voice had startled everyone, not expecting the patient to recover so quickly. The echidna opened his eyes and saw a blue hedgehog , an orange twin tailed fox and ground squirrel to his right along with a red and black wolf, obviously the medic, to his left.

-I am Princess Sally Acorn, future queen of Mobius. Here is Sonic, Tails and Blackenthor.

-I am Knuckles, guardians of the chaos emeralds. I'd agree to lower Princess, but I'm sure you understand.

-I certainly do and you may drop the formalities. May I ask what brings you Knothole.

-I overheard you talking about the emeralds. As you said, we echidnas have harnessed its power for some time now. However, something strange happened today, which caused a power surge into the system. I was projected off the island. Your trees broke my falls it seems.

Knuckles gave a small laugh, followed by a wince of pain, which he tried to hide but didn't quite manage.

-How may we help your people?

-I'm sorry but this is an echidna matter. Furthermore, a guardian issue. I must solve this problem alone.

Sally immediately put her hand to block Sonic, knowing he would advance to offer his help. She also knew there was no use trying to convince the echidna, not tonight. From the first look, Sonic seemed to have found a competitor for pig-headedness.

-I must go now.

Before anyone had time to do anything, Knuckles was up on his feet, immediately falling to the ground. After rejecting the hands extended to help him, Knuckles used to bed to lift himself back to his feet. Obviously in pain, barely standing, the echidna still hadn't as much as wept.

-I must go, he repeated.

-Not tonight you won't, said Blackenthor. There is no way you can go anywhere with your current condition.

-I'm a guardian, I'll endure.

-You're a guardian but you're not invincible, Sally said, but even if you were in tip top shape, how would you rejoin your island?

She had a point. How will he go back up? Knuckles decided not concern himself with that for now but to rest. His ancestors would show him the way... he hoped. With the help of the medic, the echidna re-entered his bed and soon after the crowd had left, fell asleep.

Later, in Sonic and Tails hut, they had regained their respective beds, which was unusual since they almost always slept together.

-He'll need our help, Tails said.

-Don't worry, Red is going to get all the help he'll let us give... And it'll give you a chance to try the Tornado more intensively.

Tails acknowledged silently, already falling into sleep, like a child... which he was.
