Chapter 1

Eyes the color of blood adjusted to the darkness looming before them, preparing for the strenuous journey ahead. His body began to relax; it was a reflex action since his body had become accustomed to doing so when he was running. He understood that if his body began to tense he would surely pull a muscle.

He knew the night, as it knew him. He knew the night's tricks and treats, its devious plans and most intimate secrets. His senses were heightened in the hours of twilight, he could see for miles on end and he could hear a pin drop in the most noisiest of places, far more than a mere mortal could do. He used these abilities to his advantage. It was quite hereditary that he would posses such skills since he was created from the night itself. With these abilities he was ready for anything, worrying was not his style, his 'thing', his purpose. Acting on sheer determination alone he continued on, never stopping for anything, not even his own physical pains. Blood seeped from various incisions and wounds on his slender figure, intertwining and disappearing in his ebony fur. All of these injuries slowed him down quite a bit but it did nothing to diminish his fighting spirit, his will to live. This was his nature; he lived for Maria, his guardian angel in a land above the celestial kingdoms. He did not remember, her, however. The results of re-entry into the gaseous atmosphere had taken a treacherous toll on his body and mind. Along with the physical wounds there were severe psychological wounds as well. The hedgehog remembered nothing about himself, not even his own name. The Biohazard, ARK, Sonic, Dr. Robotnik, Maria. The memories of his past were locked in the back of his subconscious mind, awaiting the trigger, the key that would re-awaken them.

Harder.

Stronger.

Faster.

Listeni ng to his instincts he ran faster, his body now only a black blur in the desolate night. Trees and other elements of nature whizzed by him but he did not notice them. All he knew was that he had to run. From what? He didn't know.

Deep in his heart he understood that something was out there awaiting his arrival. He believed it was something big that would aid him in more ways than one. This knowledge helped propel his feet forward when he felt like falling to the ground in defeat. This one article of knowledge keeps him going until the very end, until he discovers what he so desperately needed to find.

He finally comes to the end of his journey, his wounds and his inner conscience not allowing him to move any further. A small cottage stands before him, smoke billowing in huge gray plumes from the chimney, adding to the whimsical and inviting nature of it all. He looks at the house, intrigued.

*Is this what I had to see? Is this what I //needed// to see?*

With eyes half lidded he staggers up to the front door and knocks, weakly at first but gradually growing louder in sound. The hedgehog expects no answer nor does he receive one right away. A slight rustling sound inside the house indicates there is someone inside but there is still no answer to his call. He taps his foot impatiently, an acquired trait from someone unknown to him at the moment.

After a couple of minutes the door finally opens, revealing an emerald eyed hedgehog with fur the color of the most vivid of pinks. The handle of a huge mallet with colors as bright as her own lies in her hand, ready to be used on the visitor if she deemed in necessary to do so. There is not need for the hammer, however. Her visitor, an acquaintance from not long ago, falls to the ground from exhaustion, a cry for help escaping his lips. The hedgehog drops the weapon and grabs hold of her friend before he can impact the ground, which would surely inflict more damage on his wounded body. Sensing the severeness of his injuries, she sets him down carefully and goes back inside her cottage for medical supplies. The sound of her footsteps on the hardwood floor echoes loudly in the demon's ears painfully impacting his eardrums with every step. He counters this by blocking out all noise from his mind, returning him to a more peaceful state.

Eyes the color of blood open once more, staring up at the moonless sky overhead. He smiles, eyes watering with tears that held no emotion.

* This must be where I was looking for*
