Golden eyes watched the fire crackle and pop, silently wishing it would live forever. Too soon it died. One by one, their friends left for bed. Something tightened in Marron's chest. Mentally berating himself for being foolish, he strove to keep thoughts of later from his head.
"Lets call it a night." A hand pressed against his back, insisting motion.
He stood, letting Gateau get up and lead the way. At the top of the stairs, he turned a longing gaze to the left side of the hall. There laid the sanctity of his own simple room, a shelf of books, and maybe even a night's sleep. But a strong arm wrapped around waist and guided him to the right.
The door clicked shut and he stood in the middle of the room, waiting. The small bedside light threw a dim yellow glow across the floor, creating shadows that shouldn't be there. It was in this light the Gateau undressed, tossing his clothes carelessly into the corner. Marron briefly wondered how many people had seen him do such. More than one.
Soon, Gateau was beside him. The blond used his body to back Marron into the wall, grasping his wrist in one hand and pinning them over his head. Gateau leaned in for a kiss, but Marron turned his head aside, actions betrayed by eyes closed in acceptance. Gateau did not like to be denied.

Marron awoke before the sun. Slipping out of the bed was simple; Gateau never held him. Entering his room, he looked in the mirror to take calm inventory of new places he would have to watch. There were a couple new dark spots on his arms and legs, but what worried him was the area on his back, right near his kidneys. This was Gateau's favorite point of contact for either a knee or a hand, last night it had been both. Marron ran a hand over it, biting back a wince.
After slipping on his robes, only one mark was visible, a small bite on his upper neck. Nothing too bad. Pulling more of his hair forward than usual, he left to face the day.

Tira glared at Marron over her steaming cup of tea. You didn't spend day after day with a person without picking up their natural routine, even with someone as private as Marron. There was something off.
"What's wrong Marron?"
He quietly sipped his tea, giving her a questioning look. "What are you talking about?"
She stood, stalking over to stand beside him. He looked away. "You're not eating right, you've stopped carrying around those massive books you're so fond of, and you won't say a damned word to me!" She smacked her hands on the table.
Without a sound, the mage pushed back his chair and left. Tira heard the angry slam of the door as he fled the house.

The cold breeze penetrated his thin robes as he sat on the simple wooden swing. Pushing with his feet, he swung lightly back and forth. Tira was getting suspicious.
/What's wrong Marron?/
What was wrong?

Gateau's hand fell hard on his cheek, twisting his head sideways and breaking his lip. He tasted copper and realized it was his own blood.
"How dare you! Telling me what to do!"
It had been a mistake, he should have never said it, he knew it. But he had to know, he had had to ask.
~*~
"Gateau, just this once, can't you be just a little...gentle?"
"Gentle?"
"Yes. You know, kiss me without bruising, hold me without making it hurt." He felt like a fool, such weak things to say. But each time they were together the pain got worse, it couldn't go on.
"Its always gonna hurt Marron." A step forward, his words were soft but his eyes were not.
"But you can change."

A punch to the stomach sent Marron against the wall. He couldn't let it happen again, he had only asked a simple question! This wasn't a relationship. Reaching in his pocket he drew out a ward.
"You wouldn't...."
He whispered the spell, Gateau stood silent.
"Go on Marron. Do it."
A look of fear fell into golden eyes. He couldn't, he just couldn't. The paper drifted to the floor and he dropped beside it. He didn't see the larger man remove his belt.
Reaching down, Gateau grasped his open collar and lifted him off the ground.
"You little bitch, to even think...You'll pay for that."
