3 - Lessons

Majic yawned widely as he followed his master up the hill. They're were continuing on their way to Dragon Mountain.was again lugging the supply bag, even though he was still really tired after last night's casting, he wouldn't complain.had wanted to carry the bag several times that day but he had refused much to the chagrin of his fellow apprentice.had watched as Shamira had argued with Majic over who would carry the bag.Shamira hadn't been able to control the build up of magic and had released it but sensing it might hurt Majic she had reversed the magic flow and had taken the full force of the blow herself.had created a crater in the ground three meters in diameter and one meter deep.had fallen to her knees and blacked out for a good half an hour.Shamira awoke she had be even more weakened.was also injured. In absorbing the magical she had cracked a rib but she kept it to herself.continued up the hill not noticing that Shamira was watching him carefully.way up Majic stumbled on some loose rocks and fell heavily on his knees.ran up to him but he didn't accept her offered hand.got up and kept walking. Passing Orphen, who had stopped to see if his male apprentice was hurt.looked at Orphen with pleading eyes. She too was feeling tired and the pain from her rib had become excruciating.with Cleao, Majic and Orphen prevented her from changing into animal form to regain her energy and heal.sighed. Majic must have less energy than she herself had. He had been carrying the supply bag since they had started out early that morning. It was now late afternoon and they had only stopped for half an hour for lunch.nodded at his female apprentice.was already at the top of the hill and wasn't stopping.Shamira and Orphen ran to catch up to Majic.they reached the top they found the Majic had actually stopped to wait for them.
"Alright we'll camp in that stand of trees for the night," Orphen said walking over to the trees.sighed in relief and followed his master.and Shamira walked behind Majic and Orphen and they entered the stand of trees.put the bag on the ground where Orphen specified and bent down to get the cooking utensils out.
"Leave it Majic it's Cleao's turn to cook tonight," Orphen said looking at Cleao.nodded and sat leaning against one of the trees.
"We don't have any water," Cleao said looking up at Orphen.and Orphen heard sniffing and turned to see Shamira sniffing the air.cocked her head to the side and watched as Shamira sniffed with her eyes closed.
"I think there's a small stream a short while that way," Shamira said opening her eyes, turning and pointing further into the trees.nodded and went to kneel before Majic.
"Hey do you think you could go get us some water and maybe you could take a bath in the stream," Orphen said, "It may make you feel better."opened his eyes and nodded, "Yes master."got up, grabbed the water flasks and set out in the direction Shamira had suggested.Majic had gotten far enough away Cleao turned to Shamira and said, "How in the world did you know that there might be a stream."
"I smelt and heard the water," Shamira said then she turned to Oprhen, "Master. I'm unable to regain my energy quickly enough."looked at her and understanding filled his eyes.
"I'd prefer that you stay close by," Orphen said nodding to the trees.nodded and fled into the stand of trees.
"What was that all about?" Cleao asked turning to Orphen.
"Shamanic Angel's can heal and regain their energy a lot quicker in the form of animal," Orphen explained.
"Oh," Cleao said and continued to prepare the dinner.started a fire and couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to see Shamira transform or even to be an animal.stood in a circle of trees approximately half way between camp and the stream. She sighed in exhaustion and fell to her knees.something deep inside herself Shamira released it and transformed.
had already collected the water and was bathing happily in the stream.sat in the shallows and stretched, yawning. He sighed allowing all the tension in his body to flow out into the stream.he had fully relaxed and had regained some of his energy he got out and redressed. stretched again, then bent down and grabbed the water flasks and started on his way back to camp.he walked through the trees he thought about why they were journeying. When Hartia had arrived back at the Tower of Fang he had just been running a high fever but as time passed he had become worse.breathing had become shallow and his body had started spasming. That's when he had slipped into unconsciousness.sighed.Hartia, he had one tough break after another. A serious illness had held him back from graduating with Lai and Orphen to become Master Sorcerors.of this Hartia was to be taught by a Master Sorceror named Curt Manwello but Lai and Hartia had just recently started a relationship. So Lai asked the elders to allow Hartia to study under him.elders had agreed on the condition that Hartia run an errand for them. Hartia had agreed to this condition eagerly. errand was for Hartia to go to a desert region in the east and collect a rare artifact from an ancient temple of a great sorceress name Cyrené Acalade.it was while he was retrieving this artifact that he had a run in with the Lamia that had made him sick.was slowly losing his mind. He adored Hartia and losing him would be too much.
'Poor Lai' Majic thought, 'Poor Hartia.'was half way back to camp when he walked into a clearing and stopped in his tracks. There before him, in the center of the clearing, curled up asleep was a unicorn.unicorn, however, wasn't like any other. It's coat was as black as ebony and it's horn, mane and tail was the whitest of white's.Majic's entrance the unicorn had woken up and looked at him.it was just staring at him with ebony coloured eyes. That seemed to enchant him. He couldn't look away.unicorn stood and made its way over too him.took a step forward and reached out his hand.unicorn bent its head and touched his hand with its horn. seemed to race through him making him feel fully energised.'s hand slid from the unicorn's hard horn to its soft fur covered forehead. He proceeded to scratch and pat the ebony forehead with care not to frighten the enchanting thing away.had told him that not anyone could touch a unicorn and most any other mystical or mythical creature. They only ever stayed in the company of people with the purest of hearts.
"I thank-you for the energy boost dear creature," Majic said as he stroked the creature thankfully, "I feel much better than I did before."unicorn lent into the strokes for only a second before stepping back and galloping off at full speed into the forest.watched the creature go then proceeded to run through the forest to the campsite.
"Master, master," Majic called as he burst into the campsite.looked up at Majic's outburst and said, "What is the matter Majic?"
"Master I just saw a unicorn in the woods. An ebony coloured one with a white horn, mane and tail. It gave me some of its energy. It was so beautiful," Majic said then he looked around the clearing and noticed that something was amiss, "Where's Shamira?"
"Right here," Shamira said coming up behind Majic and making him jump.
Shamira laughed at him.turned and winked at Orphen who smiled back at her.
"That was very lucky of you Majic. I have never ever heard of an ebony coloured unicorn," Orphen said raising an eyebrow at Shamira.ran a hand through her long ebony hair, which was now loose in order to hide the Tower of Fang symbol on her back. Orphen nodded than continued thinking about how he was going to help Hartia.had sat down by a tree and was listening to Cleao tell Shamira that they would be reaching a town tomorrow in the late afternoon.started asking all these questions that Cleao was only too happy to answer.and Shamira talked while dinner cooked then Cleao started dishing up the dinner.handed Majic a bowl with some food in it.started eating.
"Master will we be starting lessons tomorrow?" Shamira asked not wanting a repeat of today's events.though her rib was now thoroughly healed she felt angry with herself for letting it get out of control in the first place and the fact that she may have seriously hurt Majic upset her even more.they had finished their meal the four of them sat around the campfire and talked.was late into the night when Shamira yawned. She was too tired to cover her mouth.of a sudden Majic started giggling.
"What's up Majic?" Cleao asked.
"Shamira has fangs," Majic said giggling harder.rolled her eyes at Majic.
"Really. Let me see," Cleao said getting up and kneeling in front of Shamira.just raised an eyebrow at Cleao.
"Open up," Cleao demanded.looked to Orphen for help but saw that he was to amused to even want to help her.bared her fangs for Cleao to see.
"That is so cool," Cleao almost screamed in joy.tried to move away from Cleao and fell backwards off the log she was sitting on.
"Why do you have fangs?" Majic asked looking over at Shamira who was trying to fend off Cleao who wanted to touch the fangs to see if they were real.
"Don't know," Shamira said simply.looked at Shamira and from how she was paying so much attention to Cleao he suddenly knew that if Shamira had looked Majic in the eye when she answered him he would have known she was lying.
"We're starting out early tomorrow and you'll need your rest," Orphen said simply before rolling over and falling asleep.got up and went over to lean against one of the trees. Her eyes fluttered close but she did not sleep.grabbed her blanket and curled up beside the log mumbling something about how she'd rather be sleeping in a normal bed like back at Fang Manor.went over and curled up beside Cleao falling asleep instantly.yawned before lying down and falling asleep.opened her eyes and stood up. She trudged back to the path that they had been travelling along earlier that day.here she could see the moon clearly.
"Didn't I say that you had to get some sleep," Orphen said coming up behind her.
"I'm sorry if I disturbed you master but the town we're going to tomorrow, I don't know how they are going to react if they find out who I am. You see my mother was a guardian there for a several years and when my mother married my father she left," Shamira said.
"I see. Don't worry about it," Orphen said coming to stand beside Shamira and staring at the moon, "It'll be fine."
"I don't know master. I have a bad feeling about tomorrow," Shamira said looking at the older sorceror.looked at his female apprentice and nodded.
"Warning taken," Orphen said putting a hand on her shoulder.nodded and yawned.
"Bed now," Orphen said bluntly, "We'll be having a lesson before we set off tomorrow."then turned and headed back to camp.walked behind him.

"So you want me to blow up that tiny rock?" Shamira said the next day.had woken them up at the crack of dawn, much to Cleao's annoyance, and while Cleao cooked breakfast Orphen was teaching Majic and Shamira.
"That's right," Orphen said.
"But master," Majic said, "Shamira could do that easily."
"Maybe not," Orphen said.Shamira tried she didn't just destroy the small rock but also the boulder it was sitting on.looked at the rubble of the boulder.plopped down into a sitting position with her legs crossed and rested her chin on her fisted hands thinking.
"So my power was more controllable in the containment spell but since I'm no longer under its containment my powers have increased to the point where they are harder to control," Shamira said, figuring it out herself.
"That's right," Orphen said.
"That's a bad thing right?" Shamira said lying down so she could see Orphen who was behind her.who loomed over her now, nodded.
"So Majic is a powerless wimp and Shamira is over powered and hot headed," Cleao said, "You really know how to pick them."
"I'm hot headed," Shamira said getting up, "That's the cauldron calling the kettle black."just said nothing.
"What aren't you going to defend your self?" Orphen asked coming to stand beside his male apprentice.
"I'd rather live a little longer," Majic said.nodded his head. Getting Cleao mad is asking for a good thumping.and Shamira argued all through breakfast. the end of breakfast Orphen had a headache.
"Would you two give it a rest," Orphen yelled, "Your giving me a headache."
"Sorry master," Shamira said.closed his eyes and started rubbing his temples.he opened his eyes Shamira was kneeling before him with a small glass bottle in her hand.undid the lid and handed the bottle to him.
"What's this," he asked taking the bottle and the lid from her and sniffing it.
"It will get rid of your headache," Shamira said, "Just take a drink."
"What's in it?" Orphen asked suspiciously.
"Water, Vodka and Ginger," Shamira replied.
"But isn't Ginger an aphrodisiac?" Orphen asked.didn't reply she just stood up and walked back over to where Majic was trying to lift the supply bag.
"It wasn't this heavy yesterday," Majic said astounded at how the bag had suddenly gotten several pounds heavier overnight.
"Here I'll do it," Shamira said walking over to the bag.
"Go ahead and try it," Majic said ready to laugh when Shamira couldn't lift it.opened up the bag, removed the two very large and heavy rocks she'd put in there earlier, closed the bag back up and put it on her back.laughed at the look on Majic's face
"That's just unfair," Majic said crossing his arms across his chest.
"Never mind Majic," Oprhen said then he took a swig from the bottle.'s face scrunched up at the awful taste that had entered his mouth.swallowed the burning liquid as quick as he could.
"That tastes awful," Orphen said replacing the lid and handing the bottle back to Shamira.
"It will help," Shamira said walking off towards the town.Majic and Orphen followed after her.
"Oh by the way Orphen," Shamira called over her shoulder, "You were right Ginger is an aphrodisiac."stopped in his tracks.
"Shamira," Orphen yelled.took off running with Oprhen in hot pursuit.a wave of her hand Shamira teleported a short way away.kept at a distance until they reached the entry gates of the town.she waited for Cleao, Majic and Oprhen.Orphen got near to Shamira he gave her a slap on the back of the head.
"Well your headache is gone is it not?" Shamira asked smugly.was quiet for a second before nodding an affirmative.they entered the city the villagers stared them at, especially Shamira, who was causing mixed effect.
"We'll find an inn to stay in then Shamira, you go with Cleao, to stock up on supplies. Majic and I will go to the town hall and see if Lai has left any messages for me," Orphen said, "Cleao keep a close eye on Shamira at the first sign of trouble head back to the inn."nodded.hired two rooms at a small inn close to the outskirts of the village. They then split up and went their separate ways.looked around her in awe. The town was nothing liked she remembered. She remembered a bustling thriving town with its beautiful buildings and statues not this hellhole. As Cleao bought stuff Shamira carried it. Their shopping spree led them to an elaborate shrine like building in the town center. Around its perimeter, over to a thousand sticks stuck out of the ground with black pieces of material tied to the top of each. The pieces of material fluttered in the light breeze that blew through the town.
"See what happened when your mother left. Our town fell prey to disease and death. Both beasts and humans alike attacked us. It's all your mothers fault and your fathers too," a voice said seething with anger, "I lost my whole family."and Shamira looked around suddenly realising they were surrounded by very angry villagers. They held fruit and vegetable, pieces of wood and sticks some even had metal poles and rods.
"We built this shrine to honor your mother and she abandoned us like we were nothing," another angry villager said and then pointing his stick at Shamira he said, "Now you must pay the price for your mothers lack of loyalty."
and Orphen were just coming out of the town hall with bad news themselves when the saw a huge flash of light erupt two blocks of housing away.two of them ran towards it. As they rounded the corner and came into view they saw villagers picking themselves up off the ground. Metal and wood had been scattered around and fruit and vegetables were squished and splattered all over the place and in the center of it all. Cleao sat hugging Shamira to her. Cleao had a large cut on her cheek.and Orphen ran over to them.
"Are you alright?" Majic asked Cleao.
"I am but I don't know about Shamira. She took a few hits from those metal poles then she seemed to explode with magic. I caught her before she hit the ground but she hasn't moved since," Cleao said a little stunned at the recent events.reached out and carefully took Shamira from Cleao's surprisingly strong and defensive hold.fell limply into his arms, which made Orphen immediately check for a pulse. When he found one he sighed.
"Let's get her and you back to the inn," Oprhen said standing up with Shamira in his arms.helped Cleao to her feet and the two blondes collected the supplies, which now littered the floor.back at the inn, Orphen heeled the cut on Cleao's cheek before he got some water and using a small hand towel he started to wipe Shamira's face with it.'d been doing this, with Cleao and Majic watching worriedly, for only a short while when Shamira started to come round.groaned then sat up with a small gasp before clutching her left arm to her chest and falling back onto the pillow with a thump.
"Are you okay?" Majic asked coming to the bed, Cleao not far behind him.
"My arm hurts," Shamira said weakly.healed Shamira's arm before he asked what happened.
"They ambushed us," Cleao fumed, "It seems that they don't like strangers."knew very well that it was Shamira who they didn't like but wouldn't say anything that would cause Majic to ask questions that would reveal Shamira's secret so soon.
"So was there a message from your friend, Lai wasn't it?" Shamira asked.
"Yes," Orphen sighed, "He said that Hartia has gotten worse. He doesn't think Hartia will survive long enough for us to get the blood."
"I'm so sorry," Cleao said, "I know how much Hartia means to you."
"He's my best friend,'' Orphen said and sighed, "Let's get some sleep. Maybe we'll have a fresh view about it in the morning."and Orphen went to the room they were to share which was across the hall from Cleao and Shamira's.
"Shamira is there anything you can do. I mean you are an angel after all?" Cleao asked turning on her side to face Shamira who was in the bed across from her.
"I'm not sure Cleao," Shamira said getting up on her elbows.the light of the full moon that shone through the window Cleao saw a grin spread across Shamira face.watched as Shamira almost fell off the bed and onto the floor in her haste to get up.
"Look Cleao. I may have come up with a temporary solution. A temporary one but it's better than nothing. Just one problem I have to get to the Tower of Fang, which means we may be gone until mid afternoon. You see teleporting long distances can't be done around here because of its closeness to Dragon Mountain so I'm going to have to fly Master and I there. If we're not back by morning you're going to have to stall Majic. Master said that he wasn't to know about what I am," Shamira said in a rush.grinned and sat up, "Okay but try and hurry."
"I hope Master will go along with this. If the elders find me there or even know I'm coming there is going to be big trouble," Shamira said.
"You'll be fine now go," Cleao said.snuck out of her room and across the hall. She listened through the door for a second. Upon hearing nothing she entered quietly and crept up to the bed and knelt down beside Orphen's.was sleeping on his side facing Majic who was spread out on his back.grabbed Orphen's shoulder and shook the sorceror awake.his eyes Orphen came face to face with Shamira. He sat up with a start but before he could yell Shamira had covered his mouth with one of her small, delicate hands.
"Master I need to speak to you in private," Shamira whispered hoping not to wake the slumbering Majic.nodded which made Shamira remove her hand and stand up.followed his female apprentice out into the hall.
"What is it?" Orphen asked slightly annoyed that he had been woken up.
"I've come up with a temporary solution about Hartia," Shamira said grabbing Orphen's hand and leading him down the hall. Orphen was so surprised that all he could do was be pulled along.they were outside Shamira continued.
"I need to get to the Tower of Fang. Cleao will stall Majic if we're not back by morning" Shamira said in a hushed tone.
"Long distance teleporting doesn't work around here you know that," Orphen hissed.
"Who said we were teleporting," Shamira said softly.
"Well how else are we going to get there. We certainly can't walk and be back by tomorrow," Orphen said softly but with a hint of sarcasm.
"I'm going to fly you there. I'll transform and we should be back by tomorrow. If all goes well," Shamira said softly as she headed for the edge of town.hurried to catch up.
"So what is this plan?" Oprhen asked.
"I'm going to put Hartia in a temporary state of suspended animation. You see if you drink the blood of a Shamanic Angel you get put into a state of suspended animation," Shamira explained.
"So you're going to get Hartia to somehow drink your blood," Orphen said.
"You got it in one," Shamira said stopping, "This should be far enough not to attract any attention. Stand back."stood back and watched as Shamira became a shape of shimmering white and blue swirls. He watched as the shape changed into a very large and very intimidating dragon.dragon's body, arms, legs, tail and head were blue but its underside and wings were white.dragon lay down on its stomach its head resting on the ground.
"Well what are you waiting for climb aboard," said Shamira's voice.looked at the dragon and said, "I didn't know dragons could talk."climbed up onto its neck and hung on to its horns.
"Some can't and some can talk telepathically," Shamira explained, "That's if you're willing to listen. You'll have to guide me. I was three the last time I was at the tower."
"Head south," Orphen said.spread her wings and with two powerful movements of her wings they were in the air and heading south.

"Master wake up we're here," said Shamira her voice piercing Orphen's dream.Orphen didn't wake. Shamira shook her neck and head dislodging Orphen who slid off her neck and landed on the ground with a soft thump.
Orphen sat up startled but when he remembered what had happened he looked at the dragon beside him, which was now glowing and reverting to human form.
He glared at the girl for treating him like that especially since he was her teacher.
"Don't look at me like that," Shamira said when she had finished changing back, "I've been trying to wake you up for the past fifteen minutes."sighed and dusted himself off.looked from Shamira to the Tower. Shamira was looking at it with misted over eyes.
"Come on let's go," Shamira said walking towards the tower.
