The Return of the Ancients

Harry woke to brightness and horrible, off-key singing as well as the sounds of cooking and the shower. Crawling out of bed and stretching like a cat, he staggered to the doorway and poked his head out. Glaring at the increase in noise, he followed the sound and saw Jack in the kitchen. He was trying to sing to the radio, and Harry's eye began to twitch.

“Will you stop that bloody, awful racket! I was sleeping!” Harry's voice was just loud enough to surprise Jack and have him look at the angry Brit standing in the doorway.

Giving him a small smile, Jack waved at the coffee machine. “Get some coffee in you, you'll need it today for when we meet up with the others. Besides, Janet is going to need blood tests and you still have to tell your friends that you can't leave.”

Harry grunted, and poured himself his morning fix of caffeine. Sipping the hot black liquid, a sigh of happiness escaped him. Giving a shy smile in return, Harry cocked his head to the side and studied the Colonel. The man's body was in perfect shape for his age. With the graying hair around the temples, Harry assumed that Jack was about fifty years old, at the most. Knowing that with age and combat situations, the human body broke down faster, Harry began cataloging ingredients to make most potions and a permanent De-Aging potion. In his analysis, Harry missed the entrance of Daniel and the looks shared between the older men, until Daniel tapped him on his shoulder.

Startled, Harry looked at the archaeologist and blinked in wonderment and confusion. “Hunh?”

Daniel chuckled softly and pushed Harry towards the table. “What are you thinking about?” Seeing Harry's blank look, Daniel elaborated. “You were looking at Jack with a pensive look on your face. So, what were you thinking?”

Harry blushed at the fact that he was staring, so he explained. “Well, I was wondering about making some of the potions we have back home. Pain, Headache, Allergy, and many other types of potions. While I was thinking about it I remembered about how with more stress the body degrades faster. With that in mind I thought about making a permanent De-Aging Potion.” Harry shrugs and squirms under Daniel's look of disbelief.

Daniel thought about what Harry was mentioning and thought it would be a good idea to have these potions in stock. Now all they needed was for Jack to agree to helping Harry find the necessary items to make these potions.

Seeing the calculating look on Daniel's face, Harry knew that he would be getting the ingredients he would need soon enough. If they couldn't be found on this world, who says that they can't be found on another.

Jack came into the kitchen in time to the Harry smirking and the calculating look on Daniel's face. Letting out a soft sigh, Jack knew that something was going to happen that he might not like at all. Putting the omelets on the table, Jack motioned to the food, and Harry asked about the herbal shops in the area.

“Well, there are a few near the base, and if we go to Denver, we can probably find more at the mall, why?” Jack's tone was suspicious and Harry told him about the potions, leaving out the De-Ager, confirming, without words, to Daniel that it was for Jack. Jack was surprised to know that these potions could be used, but was warned to be cautious with most of them, since many had adverse reactions with others.

Breakfast finished with a thoughtful air about, and Jack called up Sam to get Teal'c, Hermione, Ron and Neville to come down to the mall near Jack's place, so that Harry could explain his plan better to the group. Promising to meet up at 1100hrs, Jack hung up the phone and called General Hammond to explain that they were going to get ingredients to help make some new medicines for Janet's infirmary.

With the permission granted and the three of them in Jack's truck, Harry hoped that Hermione didn't ask any questions until they returned to either Jack's place or the Base.

“Hey Jack, how bout after the shopping trip we all come back here for dinner? That way I can tell my friends what's going on.” Harry's voice was soft, knowing that is was Jack's decision, but hoped that the older man allowed it.

Daniel knew that Harry would prefer to have an out of the way place to tell his friends so he nodded to Jack, agreeing with Harry's request. “Sure thing kiddo. But they have to buy their own steaks.” Jack quipped with a grin. Getting a laugh out of the quiet boy, Jack smiled at the response he got and winked at Daniel. He really needed to discuss something with the man, hopefully when Harry was talking to his friends and he needed help with the barbecue.

The quartet of wizards were pleased to find the ingredients they needed to brew potions, and Harry was glad that he could get a cauldron as well. Shrinking the items and putting them in their pockets, Jack took the four of them clothes shopping. After forcing the quartet into many different outfits, the four young adults were proud owners of a decent sized wardrobe. As Jack was paying, Harry got Daniel to help him sell the idea of having a team barbecue at Jack's house.

When Hermione began to complain, Harry gave her a sad smile. “I need to tell you guys something about how we got here, and I refuse to do that at the mountain or anywhere other than at Jack's. This way I can show you how I got to that conclusion and remind you of the specifics.”

With a reluctant nod, Hermione agreed, and after she gave her approval, the Ron and Neville agreed as well. The way back to the car, Jack complained at how long it took them to get all the clothes they needed, but Harry kept snickering. Throwing a pout at the young man, Harry cracked up, and gave a wicked grin to the Colonel.

“Well Jack, the reason it took us so long is because we make clothes look good. Besides, I saw you looking at my ass.” With a wink Harry ran to the truck, laughing at the indignant look on Jack's face. Daniel snickered as well, causing a chain reaction of laughter.

Upon entering Jack's place after the four hours of shopping, Harry made a beeline towards the fridge. Pulling out some beer for Jack and the others, and his Pepsi(1), Harry wandered into the living room where his notes were. Hermione saw him and soon Harry had everyone's attention.

Grumbling about being forced to make a presentation Harry conjured a white board and some markers. “I want you all to remain silent until I am done and not make any type of protestations or what-not. I've checked this over several times and after giving Daniel a crash course in Arithmancy and Ancient Runes, he agreed with my findings.” After getting a nod from the people in the room Harry began.

“The spell we were doing in class has seven steps. First we have to visualize the focus of the spell, which in this case was to make a holographic image of our chosen fictional character. Second, each member of the group has to state the questions asked before the spell can be cast, which was done. Thirdly we begin the first set of enchantments that keeps the holographic projection in our circle. Fourth, we begin the first step of the summons and it creates a door way. Fifth, we start on the second step of the summons and slowly open the door. Sixth, we ask to be allowed to acquire a copy of the person of which we chose. This step is the most critical since any magical interference will change the spell drastically. The seventh step would have allowed the copy to come forward and answer our questions before being returned.”

Harry looked around the room and everyone seemed to understand. Taking a sip from his glass, he steadied himself and continued.

“The sixth step is the most critical because we are the anchors to the gateway. In the case of being hit physically we would have temporary amnesia ranging from a day to sixth months. Since we were hit by a spell, there are two scenario's. If the spell was dark in nature, then we would be forced to remain here until we have assisted in defeating a great evil. If the spell was light in nature we would be sent here to find our other half or halves and never be allowed to return home.”

Harry saw the paling of Hermione's face, and he knew that she already knew where this was going.

“If there was already a complete set of half's then they would assist the ones in the search. In our class, Malfoy hit us with a light curse. He knew what it would do, and he's already been given the kiss most likely, since he was the one to answer the question to the difference between being hit with light or dark spells while casting. This is why I wanted you here. I'd rather have the three of you yell at me in private than so a whole base can hear what happens and the NID coming along to do wonderful tests on us.”

Hermione looked at Harry with wide eyes and asked to see his notes. Harry didn't take it personally, since he was in his element, but was glad that Hermione wanted to be sure. Neville seemed to be alright, but he was muttering about second chances and plotting to ask about taking crash courses to catch up to the people here. Ron was pale and shaking and Harry waited for his friend to come to terms with everything.

“Harry, mate?” Ron's voice was so lost that Harry winced out a yes, “If we can't go back, we can still help out here right?” Harry nodded slowly, and Ron let out a breath of relief. “At least we get to still help out. But we're going to need covers, or the NID will be after our asses for a long time.”

Harry smirked at how mature Ron was acting and turned to Jack. “Can you do that for us? You got four more people to help you with the 'Gate and with what we can do, it might be beneficial for you to have us come along on a few missions. Hermione and I can brew a potion that'll tell you our abilities and from there we can explain what we can do.”

Hermione was listening to the people around her as she stared at the page. They were stuck here. It really didn't matter. Her parents were killed not long before the final battle by a drunk driver and Ron was with her, so she didn't have many problems with staying here. Hearing that Jack was going to get the paperwork done for them made her smile. She knew that the Colonel hated paperwork, but he was willing to do it for them(2). Getting up she nodded to Harry and began to set up the cauldron.

Seeing Hermione agree with the changes, Harry began to cut up the ingredients that they would need and putting them in order for Hermione as she would have to add them to the cauldron at the specific times. Sam was amazed at how the pair worked together and watched them work. The precision needed for the potion reminded her of chemistry and she watched, amazed, as the potion began to change colours and texture.

After half and hour of mixing, chopping, mashing and dicing, the potion was ready. Harry got out four empty vials and filled them each with the liquid. Asking Jack to hold his for a moment, Harry got a sharp knife out of the kitchen and cut his finger. Letting three drops fall into the vial, Hermione spelled his wound close.

“Pour the contents of the vial on one of the pieces of paper. I'll finish these three up.” Harry spoke with a weak grin and soon the four results were ready. Sam looked at the papers and began chewing her lip in confusion. Harry took the papers from her and posted them on his white board. The results were different yet similar and Harry, as well as his friends, were surprised to see that their abilities had changed once again, as well as their power levels.

Hermione began to explain the different abilities while Harry cleaned up the cauldron and their work station. Harry knew that he had four Animagi. He was a Black and Blue Shadow Phoenix, a black house cat, a black Stallion, and Black Eagle. He didn't know that he was a Water Elemental however, and he would need Neville's help in working with that Element. As He looked around, Harry saw that everyone was busy listening to Hermione, so he shifted into his cat Animagus form and leaped onto Daniel's shoulder. Jack was surprised to see a black cat in his house, until he saw the eyes. Plucking the feline off of Daniel, Jack held the cat in front of himself.

“Very funny Harry. What else can you turn into?” Hermione had stopped her explanations and watched at the black cat turned into Harry's Phoenix Animagus. Silence filled the room, and the bird flew around the room before landing on Hermione's shoulder and turned into a Black Eagle. A gasp came from Daniel and the others who were Native to America, knowing that Black Eagles were almost extinct. The bird flew around once more and landed far enough away from the others before turning into a black stallion. Jack was the first to move, but before he could reach the horse, Harry was back in his place. Giving a smirk and a bow, Harry went back to the kitchen. Leaving Hermione to finish her explanations.

TBC ^_^

(1) I just have to let Harry love Pepsi. It's such a good drink, besides Jack doesn't have pumpkin Juice.

(2) Jack always complains about paperwork on SG1 and in other Fics I've read, so he hates it here too.
