Chapter Six: Friendly

Alex jumped off the quickly moving truck and rolled to safety. She hid in that shadows as she made her way to her house in the quiet suburban part of town. She crawled up the tree near her window and dragged her weary form into her room. She pulled off her suit and hid it away so not to give away her secret. She studied the healing scratch on her arm from the fight with the thugs before then collapsed on her bed. She had no strength to change into her pajamas and get into bed so she just fell asleep on top.

 

The next morning Alex groaned and rolled off her bed. She still felt exceedingly weak from using so much power the night before and he body was sore from fighting. She took a slow shower, not caring if she wouldn't have time for breakfast then prepared her things for school. She muttered a good-bye to her mom and set off to school.

Richie and Virgil stayed a few more extra minutes in front of the school waiting for their new friend. Virgil tapped his foot impatiently and looked at the large clock on the school building. “The late bell's gunna ring in six minutes man…” he muttered and glanced around the courtyard.

 

“Here she comes!” Richie said and waved her over; they where a little worried when she all but limped toward them.

 

“Hey guys, you didn't have to wait for me…” she said self-consciously. After all, they didn't know each-other that well.

 

“Not a problem, we're friends now right? That's what friends do! Let's go though or we'll be late!” Virgil said and grabbed her hand, already jogging into the building.

 

“Whoa okay.” Alex said being caught off guard by his determination to get to class. After a while he let go of her and she could slow down to walk beside Richie as Virgil sped ahead. “What's with him?” she asked the tall blonde next to her. Richie shrugged.

 

“I think he wanted to tell Daisy something before class started…” he said and glanced at her. Alex's eyes looked dull and her walk was sluggish, this worried him greatly. “Are you okay?” he asked stopping her. The late bell rang but neither of them seemed to care at the moment.

 

Alex glanced down at his gentle hand on her arm. A memory sprang to her mind and she frowned thoughtfully. `No… that can't be… I need more sleep…' she mentally argued and looked back at him remembering that he asked her a question. “I'm fine… `just really tired `is all…” she said and continued walking. Richie stuffed his hands in his pocket, fingering the booklet hidden there and watching her with concern.

 

“You want to meet us at lunch today?” he asked suddenly, surprised at himself for being so straight-forward. She smiled at him.

 

“Sure!” she said. He smiled back and together they entered into their classroom stealthily and sat down.

Later that day the three had met up for lunch and had a blast getting to know each other. They became friends fast as they had a lot in common and found that they could talk to each other freely. After lunch the day seemed to drag on but soon school was over. The three met up again and hung around the school yard a while before they headed their separate ways.

 

“No waaaay Nintendo kicks Sega's butt!!” Virgil argued with Alex. Alex shook her head and sipped her redbull.

 

“Sega is the master of all; you don't see Sonic falling asleep in the middle of a battle if he doesn't move!” She argued, referring to Mario as the character who falls asleep. Virgil scoffed.

 

“That's because Sonic's not realistic enough…” he countered weakly.

 

“Realistic enough? How is falling asleep while you're fighting a gigantic, over-grown block of cement realistic? What do you think Richie?” she asked and turned to their silent friend. Although Richie loved the old consoles as much as the next geek (LOL sorry I had to put it that way…) he was not going to get into this old-fight over who's the best,

 

“Nuh uh, I'm not in this conversation!” he said with his hands up. Virgil and Alex had a glaring contest before they both burst into laughter.

 

“What a silly thing to fight about!” Alex commented over her mirth. Virgil nodded in agreement. Suddenly a siren went off and about four police cars went by. Virgil gave Richie a look and said person nodded in silent agreement.

 

“Hey Alex sorry we have to go, we forgot we had to… help our parents with something…” he said, pulled his back-pack on, and ran toward the direction of the police cars before she could say anything. Richie hung a few seconds more and waved at her with a sheepish look before he followed Virgil.

 

“What's up with them…” she pondered. She thought that maybe she should be going somewhere too but decided she was too exhausted from the power-usage from the night before to fight again. `Let Static and Gear handle this one…' she mused and made her way home.

The next day was everyone's favorite part of the week, or every teen's favorite at least… Saturday! Virgil had gotten up later then usual and took a quick shower. He headed down and avoided his sister's home-cooked lunch as much as he could to which she yelled at him for. He sat next to Richie who was already there and waiting for his best-friend to wake up and sighed.

 

“What a night… is it just me or is Ebon getting stronger??” Virgil asked and rubbed the sore spot on his neck where he was thrown against a trashcan. Richie nodded.

 

“I think he is… hey, speaking of nights tonight is movie night right? Should we invite…err… uh…” he blushed bashfully. Virgil all but laughed in his face.

 

“Alex?? Sure great idea! You're using tonight's movie night as an excuses huh?” he said slyly. Richie punched him in the shoulder.

 

“Ow!” he said and rubbed his arm.

 

“No… I just thought it'd be nice to invite our friend …I thought you'd be the one to bring it up first…” he said in mock-hurt and crossed his arms stubbornly. Virgil rubbed his arm some more wondering when his friend forgot how strong he was and wondering if he even did get stronger…

 

“Sorry jeez… alright well anyway like I said, it's a great idea… I think I've got her cell number somewhere here…” he said and dug in his bag. Richie eyes bulged out.

 

“She gave you her number???” he said in slight indignation. Virgil grinned and shrugged.

 

“Actually… she was about to give you her number but I saw her blush and turn to me instead… hmmm….” He said and tapped hi chin thoughtfully. Richie's eyes widened.

 

“Sh-She blushed? Do you think she likes me????” he asked with so much hope in his voice and eyes that Virgil almost fell off the couch. Virgil shrugged.

 

“Looks that way but girls are complicated, you can never really tell with them…” he said, thinking over his recent bout with Daisy and sighing miserably. That didn't seem to let Richie down though; he stared at the TV screen lost in thought.

 

`She likes me!!' was the only phrase that ran through his mind. Virgil waved a hand in front of his face moment later.

 

“Dude, I called her, she says she'd be thrilled to come but she has to leave before twelve…” he mentioned and leaned back against the chair. Richie nodded numbly in response.

 

`She likes me!!'

Later that day Richie fidgeted in his seat on the couch as they awaited their new friend's arrival. Soon, a quarter passed seven they saw her through the window curtains and opened the door, standing their and greeting her simultaneously. Alex smiled happily at them, feeling giddy from having friends and finally getting invited to something.

 

She saw Richie give her a slow and easy smile with almost a dreamy kind of look in his eyes and looked away bashfully, her face flushing without her approval. They watch all sorts of old movies, throwing popcorn at the cheesy and badly acted horror, acting silly parts out and laughing at their antics; all out having a blast.

 

Virgil would occasionally catch one of them glancing at each other when they thought no one was looking. He would smirk and spook them out of their own little worlds, receiving identical glares each time and laughing at the irony of it all.

 

They decide to do the same thing the next day. Alex was sad that she had to leave early and gave them each a quick hug and left; although they were both sad that she had to leave it was a good thing she had to leave early in a way… after all, they had patrolling to do!
