1. Awakening
Rachel and Grace locked up their apartment and got into the elevator. The bright morning sun shone through the windows as they stepped out into the lobby and onto the streets. Walking a few blocks north they found an alleyway that was unoccupied.
“Alright, you know what to do. Find Ruby and then find Sam. I'll take care of Castiel and Dean. Once we've found them we'll meet up and see where to go from there.” Rachel murmured.
Grace nodded. “Right, and don't forget what we talked about.” With a wave and a smile she disappeared.
Rachel however, didn't have very far to go. Turning and walking out of the alleyway and onto the already busy streets of a typical Israeli morning, she walked and made her way to the closest and easiest spot to summon Castiel. Rachel could have summoned him anywhere she liked but, so she wouldn't draw suspicion from the mortals, she decided a crowded place would be her best bet. Luckily for her, no other place had more people in the morning in Israel than the Wailing Wall.
Finding an unoccupied spot against the wall itself wasn't normally easy, but Rachel managed to squeeze herself in between an old woman and a man. She placed her hand on the wall, so she wouldn't look out of place among all the people, and sent up a silent prayer.
Hey Cas, it's me Rachel. Listen, I know we haven't gotten to talk much lately, but I need your help. So when you get a free moment, could you come down here so I can speak with you?
And a few moments later, he appeared. Rachel was able to sense his presence before she could actually see him. Looking over her shoulder she saw him on the fringes of the crowd. Rachel smiled inwardly and felt a trickle of excitement as she walked toward him. Outside of Grace, Castiel was her closest friend. They didn't get to see each other as much as they would have liked, but, considering that Rachel had been on Earth since Noah's flood, it was almost a miracle that they got to see each other at all. She gave him a light hug and after a moment of stiffness Castiel returned the favor, giving Rachel a light squeeze. If she had been human, Rachel had no doubt that Castiel wouldn't have been so friendly. Around mortals they both tended to be quiet, shy, solemn, serious, and conservative. When it was just them however, things were different.
“It's good to see you Rachel. It's been too long.” He murmured, giving her one of his rare and heartwarming smiles. She couldn't help but smile back and on the inside her stomach did a flip flop. “Thanks for coming Castiel. I hope I didn't interrupt anything. I called you here because I need to ask you a favor. It's going to be kind of tricky, but it's really important and you're the only one that I know of who could do this.”
Castiel's face turned back to his normal serious expression. His eyes narrowed, not in suspicion, but as if he was concentrating on deciphering a complicated puzzle. “What is it that you need me to do Rachel?”
Rachel looked around and read the closest human's minds, to make sure no one was listening in. There were definitely no demons among them, so she allowed herself to relax a bit and spoke. “Well, you're probably going to think I'm crazy to ask this, but I need you to get a man named Dean Winchester out of Hell.”
Castiel's eyes widened. “So, you know of the plan then?” Rachel nodded. “Yes, and that's why Dean needs to get back to Sam. If Dean isn't around then there's no way that Sam will be able to resist the dark side and open the door for Lucifer to come here. Then it will get even worse because that will usher in the Apocalypse, and that's the last thing we need. I'm still trying to put all of those demons that Sam released from the Devil's Gate back into Hell.”
Castiel nodded. “Do you know about the rest of the plan? That's only half of it.”
Rachel's brows knitted together and her lips puckered slightly. Crossing her arms, she looked at Castiel, obvious confusion on her face. “There's a second part to it? I didn't hear about that, but I'm assuming you're here to tell me. I haven't been home in awhile.” She said, glancing up at the Heavens, “So what's phase 2?”
Castiel sighed. “This is where it gets complicated. You know that all the Archangels are brothers. Gabriel is the messenger, Michael is the Defender, and Lucifer was in charge of music and is deceptively beautiful. Well, there has been unrest in the Heavens. The Demons and Lucifer himself are planning some sort of uprising or attack. We need reinforcements here on Earth to make sure that the Seals aren't broken that bind Lucifer. Sam and Dean Winchester are essential to that plan. If they are separated then we cannot succeed and Armageddon will be upon us before we know it. Also, you know of Sam's growing powers. We fear that he may not always be our ally, but if Dean is with us then Sam should be right behind him. If the seals are broken however, it will be a completely different game. I cannot foresee what will happen then.”
Rachel stood in silence for a few seconds, letting the entirely new information sink in. Hmm, I might need to check in with the home base more often.
“Well, thanks for enlightening me Cas. So we both agree that it's imperative that we get Dean out of Hell as soon as possible. You can get him out right? I mean, I could, but I'd rather avoid a certain someone if I can.”
Castiel nodded in understanding. “Of course, retrieving Dean won't be a problem for me. I feel I should tell you though, that there have been rumors both above and below that Anya might try to break out soon. Given that she's Lucifer's new second in command, she might succeed. If she comes after you, do you have a means of defending yourself?” Castiel's grey eyes held immeasurable amounts of concern and worry.
Rachel nodded. “Yes Cas, I do have a means of protection. Don't forget that I alone hold the flaming sword that once guarded Eden.”
Castiel looked more than a little relieved as he remembered. “Ah yes. I had forgotten that you where The Guardian. Michael is still a little angry that you got that sword and he didn't, considering he's supposed to serve and protect. You have a better reason to have it however. If Anya does come after you, you'll need it.”
Rachel nodded grimly and sighed, trying to push the thought of potential conflict and likely war with her long ago sister out of her mind. At the moment there were more pressing matters. “So, how about you get Dean out of Hell and once he's had a chance to reunite with Sam and Bobby, we meet wherever Dean is this evening?”
“That works for me. Oh and how is Grace doing? I haven't seen her and normally she's with you.”
The crowd around the wall was getting larger so they walked a good block away before resuming their conversation.
“I sent Grace to get Ruby and have Ruby find Sam. She'll be able to get him to Dean. After that she and I will meet up and discuss what to do from there. You can join us if you want to.”
“I would greatly appreciate that, thank you Rachel. I'll try to talk to Dean and explain his part in all this.” Castiel said. They came to the end of the block and stopped. After a few seconds of awkward silence he spoke again, “Well, I guess I'll see you in a few hours then.”
Rachel nodded and gave him a warm smile. She was a little surprised but immensely happy when he returned it. “Be careful Rachel. If you need me for anything, you know how to reach me.” Turning, he walked into a crowd of people and vanished. She walked a short distance and found a small coffee shop. She ordered a drink and sat down, scanning the morning paper that lay on her table. She hadn't just come into the café for coffee however. Looking across the shop she found three men in expensive black suits watching her. One of them, a middle aged balding gentleman, looked familiar to her but she couldn't place him. They hadn't ordered anything and they weren't reading the paper. They were just staring. She defiantly met their gaze. She felt the energy level and power increase in the room. The strangers didn't feel menacing but they weren't human and their power levels were on par with her own. They all got up, looking as if they were about to leave, but instead they sauntered over to her table. The short balding guy stepped forward. He didn't offer her his hand in greeting or smile. Rachel instinctively reached for the sword that she kept in her coat pocket but stopped herself from pulling it out. Let them make the first move. She thought.
“Hello Ms. Anderson. My name is Zachariah. You probably don't remember me, considering you haven't been among your own kind in so long. That is not important however, because what I am about to tell you is. One: you and your friend need to stay away from the Winchesters. Two: Tell your boyfriend to leave them alone as well. Three: If you do not comply with our orders, we do have the authority to toss your gal pal back into Hell and make sure that you get stuck at home base being a pencil pusher for the rest of your existence, or we could just throw you to your sister when she comes. The point is, if you don't do what we want, we'll make your very existence a living Hell. So, my advice to you is to drink your coffee, have a nice day, and forget about Sam and Dean Winchester. Our plans are much more important for them.”
The men walked out of the café and seemed to dissipate as soon as they hit the outside air, leaving a very confused Rachel Anderson in their wake.
She sat in the café, her coffee untouched, trying to sort through millennia of memories to remember who Zachariah was. She remembered that he was an angel, but that was about it. I need to find Castiel and Grace. Traveling at the speed of light, she flashed to the last place where Sam and Dean had both been.
Pontiac, Illinois 8:35 a.m.
Grace waited in the check in area of a shady, run down, el cheapo motel for Ruby. Sitting in a chair that smelled like old cheese and staring at lemon yellow wallpaper was beginning to nauseate her, so she got up and went outside and stood in the gravel parking lot, getting some fresh air. She felt a familiar presence behind her and turned. “Hey Ruby. How have things been? Nice meat suit by the way. You went from blonde to brunette I see.”
Ruby smiled, looking pleased. “I'm glad you noticed Grace. Now don't get me wrong, it's good to see you, but why did you call me here? No offense, but I have some mortals to tamper with and corrupt, unless you have something more important. Oh, and I hope this doesn't offend you either, but is Rachel around? Her pure angelic vibe scares me a little and makes me want to puke.”
Grace sighed, partly in annoyance at the jab, however understandable it was, to Rachel, and due to the fact that she was fast running out of patience. “No Ruby, Rachel isn't with me, and I called you here because I need you to convince Sam Winchester to go to Bobby's because that's where Dean is.”
“Oh, well didn't you hear? A few minutes ago Dean apparently got out of Hell somehow and arose from the grave. He went to Bobby's and now they're heading over here to get Sam. It looks like you don't need me.”
Instead of being angry like most people would have, Grace just took it in stride. “Well then, my job is done. That didn't take much on my part. Hmm, I wonder what Rachel will think about that.” Ruby shrugged. “I don't know, but just so you know, I need to see Sam later this evening to discuss some things with him, if that's alright. I know you and Rachel have been watching and guarding those guys since they were kids, and I don't want to get in your way.”
“As far as I know that's fine. You can even stick around for awhile if you want. I know you kind of have a thing for Sam.”
Ruby grinned and blushed a bit. “Well, he's a fine guy, and I do mean fine. Of course, you have a thing for Dean, so I'm sure that you already knew that. Speaking of men, Castiel's going to be in the group for some time now isn't he? I'm sure Rachel's happy about that.”
Grace laughed. “Yeah, she's pretty happy about it. She'll never let on that she is though; you know how the tough silent types are. Poor girl, Castiel still doesn't know how she feels about him, and they've been friends for millennia! I personally think he feels the same way but like Rachel, he won't go out of his way to make it obvious.”
Ruby nodded. “Yeah, two peas in a pod those two. In Castiel's case though, I think he just doesn't know how to show it. Hmm, maybe we should help them out. I mean, you can handle Dean and I can handle Sam, but Castiel and Rachel might need a nudge or push in the right direction.”
A mischievous grin spread on Grace's face. “I think you're right Ruby. We definitely need to get those two together.” With that thought in mind, the two demons went to meet the angels.
A Gas Station 9:26 a.m.
Rachel walked around inside the Phillips gas station looking at the shattered windows, stolen water bottles and health bars, the cash register missing money, and the salt covered floor. This was certainly the work of Dean Winchester.
Well, most of it.
“I can't believe you used your actual voice to try and communicate with Dean. Just look at what happened to that poor psychic who tried to track you. She got one glimpse at your true form and her eyes bled out of their sockets! Cas, how could you think that Dean would understand you if you spoke to him without a human form? He isn't deaf because of that is he?”
Castiel looked sheepishly at the shattered windows and salt covered ground. “As far as I know I didn't damage his hearing. It was a mistake to try to talk to him without a mortal form. I understand that now. Humans, they are so fragile, so delicate. I'm glad you'll be with me when I'm around them. There's so much I don't know Rachel. So much I need to learn. I hope I didn't frighten him too badly.” Cas looked a little worried as he spoke the last sentence and more than a little dejected. Rachel gave him a comforting pat on the shoulder. “Oh, don't worry Cas, so what if you made a mistake with communication. You didn't know. That's why I'm here. I've lived among the mortals so long that I can tell you and teach you anything you want or need to know about them. All you have to do is ask.”
It was just that moment that Grace and Ruby walked in.
“Holy crap! Did you guys do this? I guess I need to leave you two alone more often! Tell me, was it fun?” Grace said teasingly as she winked at Rachel, who in turn blushed furiously. Ruby covered her mouth to stifle a few giggles and Castiel just looked confused.
“Rachel, what are they talking about? I don't understand.” He murmured. Rachel glared at Grace and murmured back, “It's nothing. Don't worry about what they mean. It could be anything with those two.”
After the laughter had died down they all talked for a bit, coming up with a plan. The final decisions made, it was agreed that Ruby would corner Sam and talk to him when Dean wasn't around. In the meantime Grace would keep tabs on Sam, to make sure he didn't do anything stupid. Castiel and Rachel would keep watch on Dean and Bobby, and when the moment was right, they would all reveal themselves to the Hunters. With their plans set in motion, the group split up and began their assignment.
The Pontiac Café 9:10 p.m.
Sam Winchester walked into the café and sat down. He had left his brother Dean asleep at the motel and had come here looking for answers. Earlier in the day he had managed to summon Ruby and have a short chat. She had promised to meet him here and talk to him, trying to answer the question of why his brother Dean was back from the dead and out of Hell.
A shadow passed across the doorway and Ruby walked in. she was wearing red leather pants, a read leather jacket, and a red tank top with boots. She was also a brunette now, and her face was rounder her body leaner, her eyes wider, and her lips fuller. Sam had thought that she'd looked pretty before, but now she looked hot. He wasn't about to tell her that however, she was a demon, and he wasn't sure if he trusted her or not. After all,
Whose side was she really on?
Ruby sat down across from Sam and smiled. His brown hair had grown a little longer, his body more muscled, his expression a bit guarded, and the power he held had gotten stronger. She could feel it, and boy did it feel good. “Hi Sam, it's been awhile.”
Sam smiled. “Yeah, it has Ruby. You look good. I was wondering if you could tell me who, or what, pulled Dean out of Hell.”
He heard her laugh softly. “Oh Sammy.” She said, stroking his arm that lay across the table with her fingertips. “Is it always business with you? Why not mix a little pleasure in?” Ruby knew she was taking a calculated risk, coming on to Sam like she was. She saw him gulp, heard his pulse accelerate, he even blushed a little bit. Aww, how cute. He's so innocent.
It took Sam every ounce of control he had not to yank his hand away. Whenever Ruby touched him it felt like he'd been stuck into an electric socket, but in a good way. Instead, he gently pulled away his hand and was happy to find that his voice was steady when he spoke. “Ruby, who got Dean out of Hell?” he saw Ruby's lips tremble slightly as they formed into a petite pout. Sam thought it was beautiful and charming, but falling in love or lust and sleeping with a potential enemy was not an option, no matter how tempting it was. He waited in strained silence for his question to be answered.
Ruby sighed. “Look Sam, I don't know who got Dean out of there, but whoever it was, it wasn't one of us. Demons don't have enough power to do that, not even the strongest of my kind. Sorry Sammy, but I honestly don't know who or what got Dean out.” Ruby got up to leave. Sam followed suit, looking disappointed. “Well, thanks anyway Ruby. I guess I'll be seeing you around.”
“You definitely will. Oh, and I have a cell phone now, so here's my number. Look, I worry about you and Dean, there's something really powerful after you guys, so if you need any help just call. Check in every week or so, that way I'll know you're alright?”
Sam nodded. “I'll keep you informed.” Ruby smiled and gave him a light kiss on the lips before walking out of the café and disappearing into the mist of the night.
Bobby's Safe Room 10:25 p.m.
“I still don't know what could have pulled me out of Hell, much less left a hand print welt on my shoulder. It was probably some bad ass demon or something.” Dean murmured, as he finished painting a pentagram on the concrete floor of Bobby's safe room. Every inch of the concrete room's space held all kinds of protective wards from every culture. A mass of weapons lay spread out on the table. There was an arsenal big enough to take out everything from djins to zombies.
Bobby prepared to do a summoning ritual. All they knew was that whatever had pulled Dean out of Hell was capable of melting human eye sockets and that its name was Castiel. Unbeknownst to the two humans however, the being responsible was waiting outside. Castiel and Rachel waited until Bobby had completed the summoning ritual. Castiel walked over to the doors to open them and Rachel went up to the roof, looking through the skylight below.
Dean and Bobby whirled around as the doors where ripped open. In walked a man with dark brown hair, wearing a tan trench coat. He had about two or three days worth of stubble on his face and grey eyes. He walked right through the protective circle and Bobby and Dean reacted instinctively. They began shooting the mystery man with rock salt but it had no effect. When he got close enough, Dean stabbed him through the heart, but it did nothing. While Dean stood in shocked silence for a second, Bobby attempted to hit Castiel with an iron rod, but the angel yanked it out of Bobby's hands. Quickly growing tired of the mortals' defensive tactics, he placed his hand on the old man's forehead and Bobby fell on the ground in a dead sleep.
“What did you do to him you bastard?” Dean questioned. “Who are you anyway?”
“Don't worry, your friend is asleep. As for me, well, my name is Castiel.”
Dean scoffed. “Yeah, I figured that much out. I mean what are you?”
Castiel looked at Dean right in the eyes. “I'm an Angel of the Lord.”
Dean didn't believe him. “Get the Hell out of here, there's no such thing. Now, what are you really?”
Castiel looked slightly surprised. “I already told you. I am an Angel of the Lord. I'm the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition.”
Dean smiled grimly. “Sorry pal, but I'm not buying it.”
Castiel looked at him in confusion, then understanding. “You don't think you deserve to be saved…” and Dean said nothing.
“Look, if you are an angel, what do you want with me, why did you save me?”
“Because Dean,” Castiel said, “We have work for you to do.”
Rachel had appeared in the room halfway through the conversation but Dean had been too preoccupied with Castiel to notice her. He saw her out of the corner of his eye however, and she was leaning over Bobby. She was wearing dark blue jeans, black boots, and a green shirt underneath a black leather jacket. Her hair was coal black and long and thick, falling in gentle waves. Her eyes were a deep chocolate brown and almond shaped. She had full pink lips and her face looked like it was made of porcelain. She had delicate bone structure and looked a little exotic. She was pretty, in a classic way. Her clothes were a little big on her, but not obviously so. Despite trying to hide her body's shape, it was clear that the woman was fit. Out of reflex Dean grabbed a gun, but Castiel stopped him.
“Don't hurt Rachel. She isn't harming your friend. She is just waking him.”
Dean looked from Castiel to Rachel suspiciously. “Is she another angel too?”
Castiel nodded.
“What is this, a Touched by an Angel special or something? There's not just one of you to bug me, but two? What did I do to deserve this? You know I'm not a candidate for whatever you want me to do don't you? I mean, I'm not a good guy.”
Bobby began to stir. Rachel looked at Dean and spoke. “It doesn't matter whether you're good or not. You have been chosen.”
“Chosen for what exactly?” Dean questioned. Before Rachel could answer however, Grace barged through the door. “Hey guys. I just figured I'd come over here and check everything out. Sam is right behind me, so we're good.”
Dean's eyes widened. “Oh crap. Sam's got an angel too?”
Grace sneered, “I'm no angel. I'm a demon. My name's Grace by the way. Nice to meet you Dean.” Dean said hello and gave her the once over. He had to admit, as far as demons went, she was pretty hot. She had medium length blonde hair that was curly and wavy. She had a killer body that was accentuated by her black miniskirt, purple tank top with a butterfly on the front, and a short sleeved black jacket. She had on black stiletto boots too. Her eyes were a light blue, her skin was a light, sun kissed tan, and her lips were lush and full. She was certainly everything he ever wanted in a woman and more, and judging by the smile on her face, she could either make him squirm or make him a very happy man.
He hoped it was the latter.
And, he decided, I like her much better than I like the Angels.
Sam chose that moment to interrupt Dean's fantasizing and walked into the room. “Hey guys, what's-…..…..um, who are these people?” Bobby was now fully awake and looking from Rachel to Castiel to Grace with confusion being written all over his face.
Castiel explained who they were and that Dean and Sam were part of a much bigger plan than either of them realized. He also explained about the looming Apocalypse, how he and Rachel were angels sent to protect them, and how Grace and Ruby would be part of the protection process as well. They needed all the help they could get. After all, there were other things out there that wanted Sam and Dean too, and they wouldn't be nearly as friendly.
“So, let me get this straight. You need Dean and I to help you guys stop the Apocalypse from coming? How are we supposed to do that? We're just humans. Well, I mean, Dean is.”
“Sam, we think that you will be the one to open the door. Besides the end of the world, there's another problem. We need you on our side to fight Lucifer as well. If the right seals are broken then he will be freed, and that will mean Hell on Earth. So, Dean, Sam, will you help us?”
Sam looked at Dean, who was unsurprisingly preoccupied with a woman, namely Grace. “Well, I guess we're in. We saved the world once after all. Why not do it again?”
