Despair and Rebirth

"I'm not much of a popular guy," i explained to my friend, Charles. "But I'm nice enough, i suppose. besides, you only need a few select friends to get by in this world." He agreed with me, with a fervent nod. Charles was a mute, but he and i worked together at the video game store across from the pizza place in Jump city. "Still, i suppose a career change couldn't hurt...though not military...three years was plenty of that for me. Anyway, see you tomorrow."
Charles shook his head disapprovingly, but waved as he headed down to his bus stop. I continued down the street, into a slummier part of town. The job was fun sure, but it didn't really pay all that well. I arrived at my appartment and unlocked the three locks, before entering and shedding my coat.
I spent the evening watching TV and made myself an omelet for dinner. what can i say, i like breakfast. I'd been meaning to fix my laptop, so i fiddled with it until i became frustrated and shut it down for the night. The end of a typical day for a typical 22 year old.
The next morning i made it to work like normal and Charles was already waiting for me. The day progressed slowly, the kind that drags on, seemingly unending until it was the end of my shift. i left and headed to the park for a bit of exercise before heading home. I did a few laps around the path, until I'd run about 3 miles. On my way home, i found my main route blocked by construction. Bemoaning my bad luck i took the longer route over the river and around the city. Off in the distance was the nuclear power plant. everyone said that it was an eyesore, but no one complained about the power it provided the city.
I was crossing the bridge when i saw a flash of light coming from the plant, followed quickly by a compressing shock wave and the tumultuous roar of a detonation, making me stumble. I quickly regained my balance and faced the origin of the noise. about 1/4 a mile away was what seemed to be a small scale war. Green lights, black streaks, roars, yelling, explosions... it was sheer chaos.
"This is not the best place to be," i muttered to myself, and began to return in the direction i came. Thinking i was at a safe distance, i slowed my pace and listened. the war suddenly stopped.
"What?" i turned and found the power plant still standing, though with several massive holes in it, one of which was leaking the liquid isotope into the river below. I looked down at the cliche green fission liquid, wondering the damage it would do to the area.
Before i could move, i noticed several bubbles coming from beneath the opaque surface. I peered further when a maroon and green creature leapt out of the sludge and onto me.
"Gyaaaah!"
Plasmus looked down at me, then picked me up, turning to face the rapidly approaching Teen Titans. plasmus moved to the end of the bridge and ripped a light pole out of the ground, all the while crushing me with its clay-like substance. i noticed that i was slowly getting pulled inside, despite my struggle to escape the beast engulfing me.
"HEL-!" i cried with the last moment my face was exposed and found myself swimming blind in the goo. In this state there was little i could do when i felt the entire being fall over. somehow my face freed itself of the beast, only to feel the sting of liquid against my skin. Plasmus had fallen or dove into the polluted river. I worked my right arm free and reached out, hoping something would grab me. Nothing did.
It was the first time I'd felt despair.
then plasmus surfaced, granting my the moment i needed for a breath. it had felt like an eternity, but i knew that it had been only 30 seconds or so...
I looked up to see a shower of sparks and a gout of fire. My ears protested at the thunderous din occurring around me and plasmus's movement ceased, its mud releasing its grip on me and its cohesion ending as the sleeping man appeared on the ground next to me.
"W-whoa...i survived that...." i muttered before passing out, feeling sick. I passed in and out of consciousness after that and caught bits of conversation, none of which sounded reassuring...
"-uld be dead. I mean, He's absorbed twice the lethal dose of radiation. I can only guess-"
"-is slowing. I doubt he will be with us much longer."
"-rilator isn't working! its like the en-"
"SHIT!"

I woke, looking at a sterile white ceiling, yet i knew it wasn't a hospital. it didn't smell like disinfectant, instruments or alcohol. it was almost inviting. I focused as well as i could on the mask on my face. i felt a tube going down my throat. I lifted my arm, trying to remove the mask.
"You're alive!" a gleeful boyish voice called out and i heard the person run out, presumably to notify someone. Sure enough moments later i heard several sets of feet walking in.
"Wait! let me help with that." a girl dressed in a blue cloak and with magnificent purple hair stepped over.
"I need you to cough." I made my best attempt and she pulled the aparatus out. I sat up with her assistance to face my saviors. They were Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Beastboy and Raven, the one who'd helped me.
"Thanks." I said as loud as i could. my throat was dry and sore. "This is cliche i know, but how long have i been out?"
"2 days," Robin replied. "we brought you here because-"
"I survived a lethal dose of radiation?"
"How did you know?" he asked curiously.
"I heard you. I was in and out of consciousness." I looked around, and offered my arms to Raven. "Would you be so kind?" She nodded and removed the needles, freeing my arms, and i leaned forward, touching my forhead to my knees, stretching.
"Flexible." Raven stated. I sat back up, feeling my strength returning.
"So my survival. That the only reason you kept me here?" I ask mildly.
"You can leave any time you like. But we would like to run a few scans on you. while you're concious, to see the difference."
"Difference? was there something wrong?"
"Well yeah...we couldn't scan you," Cyborg stated. "If you have any objections..."
"Can i eat? or rather, will you buy me dinner?" the titans smiled and within ten minutes i was eating a mushroom and sausage pizza.
"So, dude, whats your name?" beastboy asked me. he was holding up my wrecked shirt from the battle (i was wearing some of cyborgs spares, since his were the only ones tall enough to fit me).
"James Norman. Just call me Norm." I started another slice as cyborg started up the scanner, which was next door and began humming as it powered up. I finished the slice and carefully tried to stand, noting the my knees were none too strong at the time. Starfire came over to assist me and we shuffled over next door and into the chanber.
"Anything i need to do?"
"Nah," replied cyborg. "Just chill out." i nodded, and sat on the floor, leaning against the wall. i suddenly wanted more pizza and my stomache voiced its dissaproval of my leaving the pizza behind. the chanber closed and sealed itself and a large metal bar swept over me several times.
"Damn, I'm still getting nothing." cyborg told me.
"Broken?"
"No we scanned beast boy to be sure."
i stood up and stretched and started at Cyborgs cry of surprise. "What happened?!"
"When you moved, you lit up like a freaking torch! I've never seen these types of readings. and the moment you cease you're invisible again."
"I look pretty visible to me."
"Well, Not to the sensors," Raven replied, rotating the monitor so i could see. Sure enough when i was still nothing showed, but when i moved my body, the very air around me seemed to ignite with energy.
Later that night, i'd asked to stay the night at titans tower, and was given a room. it was plain, but it was a bed and a roof without a long trek home. and free. that was the best part. I did a few stretches, and started doing pushups when i found that i didn't tire at 40 like i normally did. i kept pressing to 200 when i stood back up and felt my arms. they seemed the same as ever, yet i knew i was stronger somehow. I thought about this a little and went down to the beach, thinking to test myself.
I picked up a rock and tossed it out to the water. it felt normal and didn't zoom out like i half expected it to. *so i can control it* I picked up another and threw it as hard as i could. It seemed fairly unimpressive. i thought of the aura the scanner showed and concentrated, envisioning the aura focussing on the rock i held. in one swift moment i cast it as hard as i could and watched it fly out of sight.
"Well...not bad..." i suddenly felt cold and decided to head back in. i told the titans about the experience and they spoke amounst themselves for a monet and returned to me.
"You show pottential. you've only had these powers for a little while and yet you are learning to control them. you are more than welcome to stay with us and hone them." Robin held out a titan's communicator, which i accepted after little thought.
"You'll forgive me if i chose to return home so i can tie up loose ends?"
no one objected, though they said i should keep the story simple and without a timeline. so, quiting my job, withdrawing my funds and signing out of my apartment i returned to the tower the next day only to find myself locked out.
"Well now what? Cripes." i sat on my duffel bags and dozed off. several hours later i heard the T-Ship returning to the roof and shouted out. Starfire flew down and opened the door with her handprint, then registered mine so this occurence wouldn't repeat itself.
My training was actually with Raven. She was a good teacher and knew that discipline was the key to my powers focusing themselves.
"So, Raven, mind if i ask a few questions?"i asked one day during a brief break.
"Are they about training?"
"Not really."
"Then yes, I do mind." she grumbled. i shrugged.
"Fair enough. Whats next?" the look on her face betrayed a moment of surprise.
"We...are still trying to focus your talent to manifest itself. Throwing rocks isnt very useful in combat." I nodded in agreement and stood, visuallizing the aura. like raven i began to float when i meditated like this. it was calming but wasn't really helping me find out exactly what i did. i opened my eyes and settled back down on the floor, watching raven hover before she opened one eye.
"you're staring."
"ah...yeah, i've been caught. sorry, i dont really socialize with females much." i resumed my meditation. a few moments later i felt soemthing brush my knee. somehow i'd started moving forward. the second i opened my eyes i fell, knocking raven down and landing on top of her.
Her face betrayed the anger and embarressment of having a man land on top of her. before i had time to stand she started chanting.
"Azarath Metrion Zinthos!" she yelled, blasting me with her dark energy. I flew back more from the motion than any detonation because i was actually holding her black power in my hand before it disipated. we were both too shocked to say anything. finally i spoke up.
"you suppose you can hit me with that again? Im curious."
She nodded and sent a single bolt at me, with i caught, and tossed it to the side where it detonated harmlessly. I thought a moment and thought for a moment, concentrating. the room slowly got warmer as i congealed my own mass of dark energy, then tossed it to the side for a similar, though less powerful detonation. i was sweating, but not from my exertions. the room was getting very warm. Raven was sweating as well.
"I think i know what i can do. I' wanna do some more expiriments on my own though. i thank you for your time. i hope i did not waste it." Raven shook her head and left the room. I thought of the dark matter and how the room heated up. i concentrated and produced a small flame, which cooled the room.
Later, as i explained my thoughts to the Titans they noticed the merit behind the possibilites.
"My guess is that i can transmute energy. When i threw that rock i got cold. i changed the heat energy around me into kinetic energy to throw the rock. theoretically, i can move massive amounts of wieght like this. of course i dont produce this energy. it has to come from some place. if I'm right, i can use sound, heat maybe even light energy..." i sat back down and produced a small flame, a feat i'd quickly mastered, until the room dropped several degrees.
At that moment an alarm went off, signifying a crime of some sort. we all headed over to the large screen and found Cinderblock ripping through the city, no clear intentions other than mass destruction. Robin looked at me and asked if i wanted to tag along.
"i'll try and stay out of the way," i replied. They all nodded and headed out to the roof. robin cyborb and myself took the T-ship, while raven, beastboy and starfire flew. The T-ship landed about a block away, and we all headed toward the moving brick, intent on halting it. once it caught sight of us, it ripped a nearby car appart and hurled its engine block at us. the other titans scattered but i didn't move, focussing on the projectile. it hit the ground in front of me, skipped and continued in my direction. Absorbing some heat from around me, i leapt about eight feet up, reaching down toward the mechanical part. the moment i touched it, the kinetic energy drained, and i formed it into a condensed fireball, and hurled it at cinderblock.
My aim was slightly off, landing about 5 feet away from it before detonating, but admittedly it was a spectacular explosion. But cinderblock wasn't too be dealt with so easily. It charged me, when Starfire hit his left side with a barrage of starbolts and cyborg used his sonic cannon. He turned and smashed the ground making a shockwave that knocked them away. Raven followed up my twisting a light post around him, in hopes of restraining him. the living rock slowed a moment, then flexed and hte metal fell to the ground. i looked at raven and yelled to her.
"Keep him still!" and began absorbing all the engery from around me. It got bitterly cold and the noise around me seemed to be muted, even the light seemed to dim. in my fist was a small, translucent rotating spere of kinetic energy. Raven twisted more lightpoles around cinderblock, giving me the nesseasy time to leap about 20 feet into the air and drop the kinetic bomb on top of cinderblock.
At first it seemed that nothng happened, but then he was driven into the gound up to his neck, pounded by an invisible hammer. the ground around him smashed down into an inverted dome. i landed and decided that unless i had a safer way down i'd have to be careful when jumping or falling from that distance. My knees were protesting at the drop.
"That was most impressive!" Starfire cried, flying down to embrace me. i must have been grinning like a madman, thinking that my powers were pretty freakin' awesome. Then i suddenly felt dizzy.
"Whoa...not...cool," i muttered as i sat down abruptly. i forced myself to shake my head, when i noticed that the area was shimmering around me as the engery condensed. i wasn't attempting to, but knew that i'd done something wrong. I saw robin and cyborg reach toward me, but i swiped thier hands away.
"Get away!" i yelled, though they didn't seem to hear me. i focused on myself, trying to contain the imminent destructive force about to consume me and possibly my newfound friends. The last thing i thought was 'go figure'.

There was a muted detonation downtown. lots of the people downtown thought it was a criminal on the rampage, and following that thought was the thought of the teen titans, and how long they'd take to react. The tax payers paid the Titans a decent salary, and most of the funds set aside for rehabilitation and construction was diverted to rebuilding the city after an attack.
Which was probably the reason they continuosly escaped.

Raven was the first to stand followed by robin satrfire and beastboy. They quickly dug cyborg out of the rubble and surveyed thier surroundings. Where James had been sitting, there was now a crater, about ten meet deep, jaged and irregilar. the forces that occured here were unlike his crisp, controlled forces. This was pure power, raw, unbridled, save for the direction. it had definetly gone down rather than out. none of hte titans would have survived had James not focussed it upon himself.
"I'm not reading anything," cyborg stated. "Its like he...vanished."
"not vanished. Destroyed..." raven added grimmly. Despite her seeming lack of emotion, everyone knew she was saddened by this turn of events.
"Wait a second!" beastboy shouted. "The scanners couldn't read him before, what if he wasn't! i mean."
"Can you get his scent?" robin inquired.
"I can try." Beastboy changed into a bloodhound and sniffed around the hole, before dropping in. After a few moments of sniffing he let out a long bay, and promptly began digging.
"He's in there? hurry, get him out, get him out!"

"I got him!"
I felt myself slowly get pulled out of the rubble, hauled out by my arms. i blearily looked at my teammates, relieved that i was the only one injured. i looked down at myself, and though i ached considerably, i seemed relativly undamaged. a quick checkup but the EMTs confirmed nothing more than a few cuts and bruises.
"Do we know what happened?" i asked robin, who turned to Cyborg.
"I'll analyze the data from the nearby security cameras and my own sensors. I hate to be the one to tell you this Norm, but i think you'll have to learn your powers a little more before joining us on another mission."
I nodded, displeased by this, but knowing another fuck-up like this could be fatal to someone. that was the last thing i wanted.
"I understand. however, you mind if i use the training area to hone myself? i mean, with supervision of course." no one objected, so i felt a little better that though i wasn't going to be part of the fight, i'd be damned if i wouldn't be helpful.
