Years Go By

He was so annoying. Really so annoying. Why did he insist on annoying her like this? They just met and he was acting like they were best friends. Why did she agree to this team, when she had so much to hide?
---
She felt the wind rustle back her hood and her hair shook loose. His eyes opened wide and he smiled. She would've blushed if she'd noticed. She was shy about her looks, even if she didn't show it. But he smiled at her and told her purple really was her color.
---
There was blood dripping from his arm. She quickly held her hand over the wound, and it slowly patched itself up, too slowly, and she bit her lip until it finally closed and he glanced up at her.
“Thanks.”
---
He was there, beyond the door. She was closing herself off again, and had that done her any good? The door slid open and she reached out to grab him, and somehow they were hugging. He felt warm and smelled nice, and she could feel his surprise, and she wanted to laugh, or smile, or do something, just because he was there.
---
It was like they were exposed to the world. Nothing but beasts inside, but they could pretend to be human, just for once.
---
She stared at him, eyes asking questions he could not answer. Slowly he leaned forward and hugged her, as she had done years ago. Then he pulled back and lifted her hood over her head. She smiled, and so did he.
---
No, this couldn't be happening. She wouldn't let this. How could she sacrifice herself when he was watching her like that? Like this was some betrayal? She wanted to turn around, to say it was a mistake and she'd fight some more.
It was too late.
---
They'd saved her.
She smiled at him, and he looked so happy. Suddenly he was hugging her, and she rolled her eyes, because it seemed like something she would do.
And she just wanted everything to be normal now.
---
She didn't know why he felt so good in the strangest of places. When they had to do grocery shopping together (because the world forced them to), or in the middle of a fight when they glanced at each other (because a glance away would end horribly), or when they sat on top of the tower, just the two of them, and watched the world turn dark.
She didn't understand it.
---
He kissed her. It wasn't even a friendly, kiss on the cheek. It was a full on lip lock.
And she didn't pull away.
---
Warmth as he stroked her skin. Lips caressed necks, shoulders, fingers. She shuddered. He shivered. Breath mingled together.
Life went on.
---
Children whined. Then they grew. They watched and laughed together, cried together, and aged together.
---
Hair snow white. He brushed the strands back and kissed her temple. She smiled.
Life went on.
