The nurse prepared his tray for his end of shift exam while the group was discussing what Kyohei told them. He collected a new IV bag, dressing change supplies, catheter care items, and his medications. When he came back from the supply room, he overheard them talking about dinner choices in the cafeteria. He continued on and entered Kyohei's room. He began with the basic blood pressure reading and such, and saw the group leave their room from the corner of his eye.
Good, they're gone. He thought. I have been thinking about you all day. We were so rudely interrupted this morning. “Good evening Takano-san. I'm your nurse, Garna Econa. I understand you are unable to see still so I will tell you what I am doing, O.K.? First of all, are you having any pain?
“Yes, of course I'm in pain. I feel like I've been run down by a mob…Duh, I was. Do you have anything to take the edge off?
“Yes, the doctor has IV medication to cover break-through pain. You already have some being given along with your main IV. Would you like another dose?” Kyohei nodded. “I take that as a yes. I'll prepare your line, and here we go.” He injected the medication in the line. “This will make you a little sleepy, but should help. I will be in here while it takes effect, and continue with what I'm doing.” He continued on and when he knew the medication had taken effect, he began with the wound care, then onto the catheter care.
“See, now doesn't that feel nice? I've been waiting all day to get my hands on you. That alarm disturbed our time together. Then, that plain girl and cop were here for so long. Dr. Basho sure took his time here too. I guess you had to have a nice talk with your boyfriends for awhile since that girl was in here all day. It's not fair to keep all that to yourself you know. If you'd like I'd love to join in. You must have some really wild pajama parties at home. ”
Kyohei realized that something wasn't quite right here, but didn't have the strength to call out or stop him because of the medication he just received. He was really feeling dirty though. Is that what my living arrangements look like to some? Nope, no into that! He began to squirm and moan. The nurse took it as encouragement, and became a bit more bold. “You know, I can write my notes in a way that can keep that girl away. She really is a bother, and so plain. She did look a lot better after your boyfriends gave her some new clothes, but you can do so much better.”
The group could not believe what they were hearing. That nurse was really out of line. So they decided on a plan to catch him, and hoped that Kyohei could forgive them later for not rushing in. They sent Ranmaru to another nurses' station to get a nurse. They knew he'd catch even the crustiest woman's eye. Takenaga pulled out his cell phone. He knew that technically he wasn't supposed to use it, but he turned on the recorder so he'd have proof of what was going on. When Ranmaru returned with a pretty, young nurse, he motioned for her to listen to what was going on.
“… what a fine physique you have Kyohei-kun. I hope you're my patient for a long time. Even when you leave the ICU, you're having orthopedic surgery and my regular job is in Ortho. I even float to Rehab, so I'll see you there too. I'll help you get all better.”
After hearing all this, the nurse called the nurse manager and told him the situation. After getting approval, she went in.
“Econa-san, what's going on here?”
He retorted, “I think you're lost Hitomi-chan, `No Girls Allowed' in here. Check the orders. It's not only for visitors. It's staff too. The police are enforcing it. Do you want to go to jail?
“No, do you?” The new nurse answered. “I've been listening at the door a few minutes and I could hear what you were saying to your patient.”
“You must have heard wrong. Why were you over here anyway? Is it too boring over at the Cardiac Unit, and you wanted to check out the `Special' patient?”
“I have been listening, and have informed the nurse manager of your unethical behavior. Someone should be here soon.”
“It's your word against mine. I've worked here a lot longer than you and you have no proof. You were over here for no particular reason.”
“Do you think I'm so shallow, that I'd go around and look at handsome patients? No, I was invited here. By his roommates. It seems that Kyohei thought he was being groped this morning, so he tried to yell. That's why the alarm went off on the vent. They thought it was odd that you were rushing them off the floor, so only one left. The others were sitting in the chairs beside the door. Come on in.”
As the group entered, they were joined by the nurse manager and the resident on call.
“Econa-san, what do you have to say for yourself? This makes all nurses look bad. You used your position to put your patient in an uncomfortable situation.” The manager scolded. This won't be tolerated. Finish your charting, but don't leave. We need to find out what happened here.”
“Nothing happened, I was doing routine care. See?” as he held up his notepad and pointed to his tray.
“Would you care to explain this?” asked the manager, as he played the recording.
Nurse Econa blushed, and then paled. “I guess I've said enough.”
The resident spoke up, “You were aware this man's attack was precipitated by an act of sexual harassment, and yet you did this. The orders were clear about keeping women away. Why did you think he'd welcome advances from a man?”
“W-well, he lives with all those other men and they are too pretty to be totally straight. Look at them. Oh, well the really effeminate one isn't here, but still. The girl isn't what I'd expect a handsome, straight guy to be involved with. She has to be a cover. He must have come out of the closet and was attacked, or something.”
The manager started in on him again, “So you make judgments on appearances and circumstances, hmm? You know there are things we can't and wouldn't ask you about your personal life, but you just brought it in. If we followed the common misperception about male nurses, both of us, and many other male nurses would be out of work. There aren't that many male nurses because of that. Believe me; I have been trying to staff Takano-san's care with all males. It's not easy. Now, I have to worry about the male nurses taking advantage of him now. Fortunately, his roommates are willing to stay 24 hours a day with him, even the woman. We have arranged for the order to be modified for this. You really have opened us up to a lot of trouble, and I hope Takano-san doesn't force the issue. You may go and finish up. Meet me in my office downstairs.” Econa left, and the manager turned to the group. “I'm sorry this happened, we don't tolerate this behavior at all. He will be terminated, and if you wish to proceed, disciplinary charges can be added to his license.” He turned to Kyohei in his bed, “Takano-san, can you hear me? Crap! Doctor! The monitor has been turned off, and he's not breathing enough. It must be from the pain meds and the sedatives.”
The resident barked, “Get me a reversal agent. I hope he hasn't been down too long! Roommates, excuse us.”
