The night passed fairly peacefully for our group. Sunako had dreams of Kyohei. Some of nicer ones featured a future for them. But the not so nice ones showed him taunting her saying, “How could I stand to be near someone like you? You're too ugly to be close to someone like me, your ugliness might rub off. Ugh! It did. Look at me; I've been disfigured because of you.” So it went all night until morning.
The guys at the house most definitely slept well. They fell asleep as soon as their heads hit the pillow, and slept the sleep of the dead. They awoke and had breakfast prepared by the new help, a delicately flavored broth with rice. Just enough to start the day, it was light enough that if they got ill watching the surgery, they wouldn't get too violently ill. They had packed four large bento boxes with; omelets of all kinds, a wide variety of sushi from rolled to inari sushi with sauces, a salad, and sponge cake. The ladies told them that they were starting out with Japanese cuisine, but if they wanted something else to let them know. They thanked them and headed over to the hospital, ready for their day.
Poor Yuki had the worst sleep. He was glad he was shorter, so he was able to curl up on the chair, and try to sleep. It still did not make for the most comfortable bed though. About 2AM, he decided to ask the nurse if he could at least get a spare pillow. The nurse did one better and got a reclining chaise lounge for him. But by that time, the night was shot for Yuki.
Kyohei was nervous about the surgery. He was more nervous about what he had shared about his feelings. He had always preferred to keep them bottled up, and away from everyone he knew. Now, Yuki had all but confessed that he had not hidden things as well as he thought. At least to his roommates, he hadn't. Sunako seemed to be changing her attitude, and he wasn't sure if he liked that or not. While Yuki was tossing and turning, he decided to ask for a sleep aid, and when he received it, he was able to put his fears to rest for the time being.
When Ranmaru and Takenaga returned, everyone was still asleep. The nurse was getting the last of the Pre-Op orders transcribed and carried out. They woke Sunako and Yuki fairly easily. Kyohei was another story, the sleeping pill worked well. So well, that he wasn't awakened before surgery. Ranmaru went with him and the pretty little blonde nurse from Pre-op. Since Kyohei wasn't awake, he was able to get the nurse's phone number along with her birth date and blood type. He was able to be with Kyohei until he passed the double doors headed to the surgical suite. He then went to a waiting room to await news.
Above the surgical suite, was the theatre, a place where students would typically go to observe procedures. Sunako and Takenaga took their seat among the several medical students and interns that were observing. For once, a crowd was watching for something else other than for being Kyohei. The surgery was fairly straight forward, and Kyohei's surgeon adeptly pinned and set his leg. Takenaga talked to a few of the students, instead of watching too close. Sunako, on the other hand couldn't take her eyes off. She was watching living tissue being worked with. This beat her whole anatomical collection any day. She was amazed on how he used a hammer and pin to set his leg together. I know how to do that! And then, they closed it and sent him to recovery. Takenaga left for the waiting room to join Ranmaru and Sunako left to follow Kyohei.
In recovery, or PAC-U (Post Anesthesia Care Unit), Sunako joined him. He looked so peaceful lying there. Sure, his head had a bald spot, and his face was bruised, and turning sickly green in places. The surgeon reported to her what all had been done, so she understood what she saw. It appeared that everything was going well, and he told her about some of the problems that might come up. He knew the nurses would watch, but Sunako was going to be right there. She also had a keen understanding of how the human body worked, so he treated as a potential colleague. Sunako appreciated that. She didn't like to be regarded as that dark shadow that followed the guys. The surgeon told her that it might be a while before he woke up, but he was sure that Kyohei would appreciate that she was there. He told her that he'd see her and Kyohei on the orthopedic wing later today or tomorrow.
Oh No! She thought, He's being transferred to a new room. Well, he wasn't hurt bad enough to be in the ICU anymore. I hope there's enough room for all of us. ICU rooms are so big. We might not be able to camp out nearby anymore. She settled down beside Kyohei, and waited like she did yesterday. She pulled the chair as close as she could, and held his arm as she laid her head beside it. She quickly found out that this wasn't going to work. The nurses came in every 15 minutes to check him over. After about an hour and a half, Kyohei began to stir. He began to call for help as if in a bad dream. When the nurse came in to check on him, he yelled out “God Damn it! Why can't you women understand? Leave me alone! I am not interested in anyone new. Sunako Nakahara is my girlfriend. I've been living with her a while now. She doesn't always look like much, but she is the best person for me! She understands me. No one else can, not my parents and not even my current roommates. She doesn't try to change for people, to make them like her. But I love her for who she is, and not for what can become. If she wants to wear nasty sweats and not shower for days, it's up to her. Not pleasant, but it's her. She looks just as sweet to me as when she's dressed up looking as fancy as the Empress on a Hina Matsuri shelf, or anything else Auntie makes her wear. She is the one woman that I know, other than my mom and Auntie, that hasn't tried to bed me. I'm sure that if that happens, I'm sure it will be unforgettable for us both.”
As he was ranting, a few things happened. At first, the nurse began to look for sedative orders, but then as he spoke he seemed less agitated. Sunako's ears perked up because she could not believe what she was hearing. She began to cry and grabbed his good hand once more. When she grabbed his hand, his eyes flew open. He then realized where he was and to whom he was speaking. His face blushed where it could. As she looked to his face, she looked for a towel, just in case. When their eyes met, they were ready for the inevitable nosebleed gush. It was only a small trickle.
“You opened your eyes!” Sunako cried. “You must be getting better! You still look rough, and maybe a little worse because your bruises are healing. I never, ever thought I would be so happy to look at your eyes.”
“Sunako?” Kyohei finally said, “What did I say in my dream? I dreamed that I was being manhandled and I was telling them off. Did I say anything potentially embarrassing? I think I might have.” Then he was silent for a few minutes. Sunako didn't answer him. She just looked at him in small glimpses “Not that I'm complaining, but no nosebleed? Wow!”
The nurse came in and finished what she was doing. She said that he'd be here for an hour more. Then they would transfer him to his new room. The nurse told them that they had arranged a Semi-private room for him, but he'd be the only occupant. It was advised with the situation with the unwanted visitors and the constant company it would be best.
“I don't know about the nosebleed situation.” She said. “Yuki has a theory though. He said it may be a defense mechanism from fear of rejection. From what I just heard, it reduced my fears of rejection greatly.”
“So… you heard that…Should I be embarrassed? I'm not sure what I said exactly, but I remember some of the sentiments. My question is how do you feel about me as a friend and perhaps more?”
