Chapter One

A pair of huge doors swinging open echoed loudly through the hall, prompting Subaru to jump up nervously. Taking a deep breath, the young angel entered the sanctuary, trying to look as inconspicuous as possible. It was the first time he'd ever been in the presence of one of the senior archangels and he was suitably nervous.

Subaru took the opportunity to make sure his clothes were unruffled and his wing feathers neat before he walked up the long carpeted aisle. At the very end, a golden haired angel sat at an immense desk, piled high with papers. He was scribbling frantically.

Subaru timidly stood for a moment before gathering enough courage to cough discreetly. "Kakyou-sama, you sent for me?" he ventured to ask.

Kakyou looked up over the stack of papers and eyed the young angel. Subaru was only a few centuries old making him only a teenager in human reckoning. This would be his first major assignment on earth, but the archangel was confident he would cope. He'd been pleased with the young angel's work so far.

"I presume you know why I summoned you?" he asked, gracefully pushing a strand of silver-gold hair over his shoulder. He didn't wait for a reply before going on. "About a year ago--a year of earth time-- one of our warriors went rogue and disappeared on Earth, somewhere near the city of Tokyo. We assume he's taken on a human form, as we can't locate him from Heaven." Kakyou watched the young angel carefully, making sure he was absorbing everything.

"You are charged with the task of finding the warrior angel Seishirou and returning him to Heaven. You are to use any means necessary to bring him back unharmed." Kakyou opened a desk drawer and pulled out a small box. He handed it over to Subaru. "Inside this box is a collar with the ability to hold the target powerless under your control. Once you put it on him, only you will be able to remove it. It would be best if you can convince him to come back of his own free will, but if not, you may use that to assist you. Good luck on your mission." With that, the archangel went back to his paperwork.

Subaru gasped at the importance of the task that he'd just been given. His heart pounded fast with concern for whether he could be able to do it well and properly. Reverently, he took the box with the magic accessory. Bowing deeply to Kakyou, he quickly made his way out.

The sudden glomp on his back almost made him drop the box. "Hokuto! Don't do that! You almost made me drop this!" Subaru clutched the box to himself tightly, ignoring the cloud of feathers that he was shedding in agitation from his quivering wings. It was enough for him to be worried about his mission without having to keep a look out for his nosy twin.

Hokuto hovered inches above the ground to accommodate her long, flowing gown. She grinned at her brother as she released him from her embrace.

"I'm so proud of you!" she cooed. "My baby brother getting his first taste of the world!" Hokuto grinned brilliantly. "So what's the mission?"

Subaru pouted. "You're just as old as I am!" he pointed out. They were technically the same age, even though Hokuto came out first from their egg. He batted her inquisitive hands away from the box. "I've been given the mission to bring back the warrior angel Seishirou. Isn't it wonderful?" he answered her. They'd both heard the fearsome reputation surrounding Seishirou and Subaru was proud that he was the one chosen out of the thousands of angels in Heaven entrusted with the task of bringing him home.

Hokuto was impressed. "Wow, so you're not just a messenger angel anymore," she said and ignoring the fact that he asked her not to, Hokuto glomped her brother around the neck once more. "If you do well on this mission, pretty soon you'll be important! They may even give you a promotion." Her eyes went starry as she pondered the outfits she would dress him in once he was a high-ranking angelic official. Her daydream was shattered when Subaru spoke up again.

Subaru knew that gleam in her eye well. He was certain visions of him dressed in strange and flamboyant clothes were dancing before her mind. "No you don't!" he said fiercely. "No more strange and kooky outfits for me to wear! You know how it makes me go all red when people look at me!"

Holding up a hand regally, he forestalled her from answering. "I better get going. I wouldn't want to take too long on this important mission," he said earnestly. Then shooting a concerned glance at her, he added, "Are you going to be all right alone?" He knew Hokuto's propensity for getting into trouble without his presence. She had a tendency to charge headlong into things. Perhaps that's why she made such a good warrior angel. Her Hammer of Doom was much feared among all the other angels, if only for her lack of ability to distinguish friend from foe.

Hokuto backed off and put her hands on her hips. Her little brother was growing up after all. "Alright. You hurry up and bring back that angel!" she said, a smirk twisting across her face. "Be careful though, he's really good looking and he might seduce you!" Hokuto dissolved into giggles, rolling around a good foot and a half off the ground.

Subaru made a sniffing sound to tell her he didn't believe that would ever happen. "Yeah right. Very funny," he grumbled at her. He ruffled her head fondly before bidding her goodbye and launching himself down towards Earth.

As he flew towards his destination, he wondered just how he was going to find his target. Winging his way past the clouds, he pulled up short at his first sight of Tokyo. This city was enormous! The human city teemed with life and noise. He was so taken aback that he barely noticed the jet that shot past him until he was caught in the back draft.

Trying to steady his wings, he tumbled out of control, rolling over and over in the strong turbulence. It was harder than he expected. He'd been safe inside the confines of Heaven for too long to be used to the strange chaotic nature of modern Earth. Wheezing hard and with his head giddy, he failed to notice when the ground came rushing up-- until the last minute. With an undignified yelp, he crashed into a large tree.

A pair of dark amber eyes looked up as he sensed the presence of one of his own kind nearby. He slinked behind a grove of trees, assessing the situation. When the angel crashed into a tree, Seishirou couldn't help but chuckle. So they'd sent a youngling after him. He stayed where he was, not bothering to try and mask his presence. He was going to have a bit of fun with this.

Subaru knew he was in a bit of a predicament. He had aches and pains in places he didn't know he had. Carefully he tried to stretch his wing and cried out. It wasn't broken but was very possibly sprained badly. Breathing through his mouth, he tried to get a grip on himself, taking a moment to rest while dizzily watching the drift of his snow white feathers raining down to the ground.

Regaining some of his composure, he thought the first thing he was going to have to do was get down. Gingerly he extricated his limbs from the branches of the tree that was so eagerly tangled around him. Too late, he realized it didn't leave him with any anchor and he was unable to stop himself from once again, tumbling the short distance to the grassy lawn of the park. He landed hard. He yelped and rubbed at his sore bottom. That really hurt.

Seishirou couldn't help himself and laughed out loud at the comical scene unfolding before him. This angel was certainly wet behind the ears. He stepped out from his hiding place and withdrew a pack of cigarettes from his trench coat. Lighting one, he walked over and looked down at the injured angel. "Having problems?" he asked, half snickering.

Subaru was totally shocked to be thus addressed by someone who had suddenly come up so close. He looked up and blinked at the shadow looming over him. His jaw dropped as he did a double take. That particular aura was unmistakable.

"You! You're the warrior angel Seishirou!" he gasped. He couldn't believe he was already meeting the target of his mission. But worst of all, Subaru wasn't prepared to handle him right now, flat on his butt and with a sprained wing as it were. He scrambled back on his bottom, trying to put some distance between the two of them, but came to a sudden stop with his back against the eager tree that had only a short while ago entangled him.

This reaction caused Seishirou to laugh even harder. He took a long drag from his cigarette and looked down at him. "For Heaven's sake, change into a less conspicuous form," he said, looking around to make sure no one else could see them, before adding, "and mask your aura. Lord knows what weirdoes might be lurking around." He said this in a dark tone, as if he himself was afraid of something. Inwardly, he was trying hard not to laugh and fail in his efforts to intimidate the youngling.

Subaru shut his jaw with a snap, suddenly aware he was gaping. Seishirou's advice made sense and he obediently did as he was told. Closing his eyes, he enfolded his angelic aura into a kernel deep within himself, leaving in place frail human flesh. At the same time, he tucked the precious box into an inter-dimensional pocket, as he didn't expect he'd be able to slap the collar on Seishirou any moment soon.

The resulting gasp echoed across the clearing. All of a sudden strange feelings assaulted him, feelings that he'd hitherto never experienced. It left him lightheaded and confused. It was a long moment before he was able to gather enough composure to say with aplomb, "Warrior Angel Seishirou, I am here to bring you home."

"What? So you're not here to pick up a few groceries before heading back to the Heavenly courts?" Seishirou snickered. "If you think that I'm coming back with you, think again."

He finished off his cigarette and lit another. One of the perks of being an angelic being was not suffering the ill effects of smoking. His lips quirked in a smile. "Earth is quite a nice place. I've become to think of Tokyo as my home."

Subaru sputtered. He looked about helplessly and tried to regain his feet. He didn't think Seishirou was going to come along with him so easily, but he had hoped his job wasn't going to be impossible. Why, the man was just infuriating. He made a growl before remembering it wasn't dignified for an angel to be making such sounds. Reaching out, he tried to grasp Seishirou's arm.

"Why don't you want to return to Heaven? They need you there! And surely no place on Earth could possibly compare to it!" he exclaimed even while furiously thinking about how he was going to clap that collar on Seishirou.

"Yes, and I'm sure they're going to welcome me back with open arms and tell me to pick up my flaming sword again," he said, rolling his eyes. There was no way he'd ever get his position back in the ranks of Heaven. Fallen angels had to work their way up again from the bottom and he'd be dammed if he was going to spend the next ten thousand years doing menial tasks. He gave Subaru a hard look before a plan formed in his head.

He grasped Subaru's extended arm and yanked him close. "You know, you could like it too. How could you know why I'd prefer to stay here if you didn't find out for yourself," Seishirou whispered. His voice was low and alluring, hoping to turn the angel's mind from his capture.

Subaru face was a study of total panic. He'd never been manhandled like this, not once in his three hundred years of existence. But there was something about Seishirou's proximity that made him melt into the other's body for just a moment. His heart raced and his mouth dried as he gasped at Seishirou. His mind was a whirl of confusion. Why was he so affected?

He shook his head in denial. "No, I can't possibly stay. I can't possibly stay," he protested. Left forgotten was the fact that he couldn't go back even if he wanted to at the moment, his wing being too injured for immediate flight.

"Certainly you can stay just for a while," Seishirou said smoothly, still hanging onto Subaru's arm. He looked at him intensely. "Besides, you must have injured yourself in that rather nasty looking fall..." His words were sweet. It would be so much fun if he was able to corrupt the young angel.

Well, Seishirou had a point. Besides, Subaru couldn't go back without completing his mission. If he stayed with Seishirou, he might be able to seize some opportunity to get his job done. Nevertheless, it wasn't without some misgivings that he found himself agreeing with the rogue angel. "Well, perhaps I... could stay... for just a while," he said shyly. "But what am I supposed to do on Earth?" He looked at Seishirou with wide-open innocent eyes.

"We shall eat, drink and make merry," Seishirou proclaimed, giving Subaru's nose a good tweak before releasing him. "I know a good place to get chocolate cake. Now that's something you can't get in Heaven." He smiled sweetly, doing his best to convince the youngling that his intentions were pure.

Subaru's dubious expression told of his exact feelings on that matter. He wasn't experienced enough to know that every thought and feeling was reflected like an open book on his face. "Chocolate cake?" He turned his face to look left and right, as if expecting the cake to materialize like magic, which was a very valid thing for him to assume since things did happen that way in Heaven all too often.

Seishirou chuckled. The young angel was terribly cute. He decided that it wouldn't be a waste of his time to toy with him. "We have to go somewhere else to get it. They call these places cafes on Earth."

He turned to lead the way down to his favorite coffee shop when something occurred to him. "I don't think I got your name," he said with a tilt of his head. "You know who I am, so I must say you have me at a bit of a disadvantage."

Ignoring his aches and pains, Subaru ran to keep up with Seishirou's longer strides. "My name is Subaru. And yes, you're famous, Seishirou-san," he chirped politely. While Seishirou had a fierce reputation, in person, he was rather nice, Subaru thought. Too bad he was in disgrace in Heaven.

"Yes, I suppose you've heard all the dirty rumors that have been flying around about me," Seishirou smirked. "Did you hear the one where I was apparently seduced by a human sorceress and she keeps me in a birdcage?" He laughed at the absurdity of it. "I'm sure there are more, but I haven't run into any other angels lately."

The walk to the coffee shop was short and soon there was chocolate cake and tall mocha lattes for each angel. Seishirou tore into his piece with enthusiasm.

"Yes, chocolate cake is one of the many reasons I choose to stay on Earth," he commented, licking the frosting from his fork.

Subaru blushed as Seishirou talked about the rumors surrounding him. Subaru had indeed heard about them and like a total idiot, believed them all entirely. It had sounded like Seishirou lived such an exciting life. Subaru had been secretly envious and also deliciously titillated by the danger that an angel could be corrupted like that. He wasn't sure whether to be disappointed or relieved to learn that the rumors were false.

He looked down to hide the conflicting mix of emotion that flittered across his face. So this was chocolate cake. Aping Seishirou, he took his fork and ate a generous mouthful. His brilliant green eyes widened when the taste burst on his senses. "It's good," he exclaimed and began to shovel more into his mouth, unaware that he was setting himself up for a major sugar rush.

Seishirou leaned back in his chair and watched the young angel. It was very entertaining seeing his reaction to the sweets. It was reminiscent of his first encounter with the stuff. He took a sip of his coffee.

"So, what else have you heard about me?" he asked. Not that he cared what the others thought about him, but the rumors always gave him a good laugh.

Subaru's eyes took on the resemblance of a deer caught in headlights under Seishirou's direct gaze. No, he couldn't possibly repeat all the rumors about Seishirou. It was too embarrassing, besides they showed how gullible he was at believing them. "Er... er..." he stuttered. "Nothing! Nothing at all!" he replied with panicked tones. So intent on showing how earnest he was, he forgot to swallow and somehow some cake went down the wrong way, which resulted in a massive coughing fit. Tears sprang from his eyes and he sincerely thought he was going to die.

Seishirou tried not to laugh outright. He didn't want to cause a scene in public. He handed the boy a glass of water and waited until the coughing died down. "Are you alright, Subaru-kun?" he asked, acting as nice and concerned as he could.

Subaru nodded furiously as he tried to stop himself from snorting his lungs out. He took a gulp of water and it helped. Eventually the coughing fit stopped and he was left totally exhausted. He didn't know how he could be so wearied just from the day's activities but he had never been more tired.

"Aa, yes, I'm fine," he said hoarsely when he could reply Seishirou. "Thank you." Then he turned a smile that was in every way angelic at Seishirou. "You're so kind to me," he added.

Seishirou couldn't help but laugh at that. He'd been called many things over the course of his life, but kind was not one of them. "You don't know me at all, Subaru-kun," he said with a dangerous look in his eyes. "After all, I am Fallen..." He paused for a moment to let that sink in before he turned his attention back to the remainder of his cake.

Subaru paled at the reminder. However, it didn't last long before his natural optimism rose and he was once again smiling at Seishirou. Impulsively he reached over to touch Seishirou's hand. He was surprised at how warm it was. "You might be Fallen, but if you ask for forgiveness, you can be saved again and live among us in Heaven once more," he said guilelessly.

Really, the youngling was just too funny. Seishirou laughed again. "What if I told you I don't want forgiveness from anyone? Asking for forgiveness would require being sorry for something, wouldn't it?" Again, his hard gaze studied the boy. Even by angelic standards, he was naive.

Subaru frowned. He didn't understand Seishirou at all, but he truly wanted to. Something about this angel tugged at his heartstrings. He would save Seishirou if he could. "But why? Why don't you want to return? Doesn't being Fallen mean you suffer? It can't all be wonderful here, even if you're not presently the captive of any evil sorceress."

Seishirou shrugged. "I don't suffer at all. It's quite the opposite. Here I'm free to do whatever I like and indulge in whatever pleasures are out there. A life of servitude didn't suit me at all." He almost started laughing again at the youngling's naiveté. It would be a pleasure turning him on to the sins and seductions of the world.

Subaru was horrified at Seishirou's attitude. He couldn't envision any other life than helping people and serving the orders of his superiors. Nevertheless, his curiosity was peaked as he wondered how good the pleasure must be for Seishirou to give up Heaven.

"I'm sorry, but I just can't understand," he said, shaking his head sadly at Seishirou.

"I could show you," Seishirou cooed low in his throat, his voice heavy with seduction. He gazed intensely at the young angel. He was determined now to take this breathtakingly beautiful being and corrupt him.

Subaru wasn't sure if he liked Seishirou's tone. Just why the offer sent shivers up his spine, he didn't know, but it sounded like a world of trouble. However he was getting no closer to getting his mission accomplished sitting here like this. Perhaps if he kept Seishirou company for a while, he could find a moment to catch him off guard to put the collar on. He was confident nothing on this Earth could be so pleasurable as to make him forsake Heaven.

"Well... all right," he agreed uneasily. He kept his fingers crossed that he wasn't going to regret this.

Seishirou in no way believed that Subaru had accepted that easily, but it was an opportunity and he was going to take it. He stood and motioned towards the door.

"It's late and you're probably tired. You don't realize that you need to sleep after taking human form."

Now that Seishirou mentioned it, the day's events had left him totally sapped of energy. He was hard pressed to keep from drooping while he stumbled alongside Seishirou. "How can you bear it? I feel like I can barely lift my feet," he complained. He was very tempted to change back to angel form, and recharging through the energy of the sun.

"You'll get used to it," Seishirou shrugged, leading them out of the cafe and down the sidewalk. It was late afternoon and the sun was drooping low in the sky. People swarmed around them, most of them heading home for the evening. They followed the flow of humanity until they had to stop at a red light.

All seemed calm until a loud screeching of brakes ripped through the air. After the initial shock of hearing a bang, people began to crowd around a stopped car in the intersection.

Subaru craned his neck to see. "What's going on?" he wondered, starting forward. He gasped in shock. There was a child lying on the ground in a pool of blood. "Oh no!" All of Subaru's instincts screamed for him to go forward to help.

Seishirou, however, kept his head down and tried to ignore the mess. It was a bad policy to get involved in human affairs. "Let's get going," he hissed lightly, wanting no part of this.

Subaru failed to hear him. Almost dreamily, he moved forward to crouch down beside the child. Laying a hand on the woman beside her, he said, "Don't worry, she'll be all right." The mother, who'd been screaming for help suddenly fell silent, her gaze caught and mesmerized by his beatific smile.

Subaru nodded and focused on his energy, directing it into the prone child. She wasn't dead yet but was badly hurt. Slowly he knitted her internal organs back, using all of his energy to do it. While he did so, a golden glow encased the both of them.

Seishirou said some very un-angelic things under his breath and grabbed Subaru by the hair, yanking him to his feet. He quickly cast an illusion around them before anyone noticed anything odd about the two of them. Needing to get away quickly, he scooped a weary Subaru into his arms. Since their cover was blown anyway, he chose to transform long enough to get them away from the crowd.

A pair of magnificent black wings unfurled from his back as Seishirou took to the sky.

Subaru hadn't realized how drained he was until he was done. He barely even felt Seishirou yanking at him, though some part of him was conscious of being held in his arms as he was lifted up into the air. It was however, the last thing he was conscious of before he slumped into blackness.

Seishirou landed on his balcony, carefully folding his wings and tucking them away until they faded from view. He opened the door and deposited Subaru on his sofa. The poor naive soul had almost got them in trouble. He shuddered to think of what would have happened if the crowd of people recognized Subaru for what he was. The older angel shook his head.

Their presence was more than likely detected by anyone in the vicinity with magical powers. Too many humans held the misconception that angels held the key to eternal life, abundant wealth, good health, and so forth. There were groups of people, who dedicated their lives to wizardry; hunting and capturing heavenly beings like themselves. What these people didn't realize was that angels cannot perform on command without orders from above. Fallen angels, like Seishirou, usually didn't give a damn about how much humanity was suffering and wouldn't grant wishes under duress anyway.

Seishirou sighed. Humans were incurably stupid. He made himself a mug of tea and waited for Subaru to wake.

Notes:

Okay, this is S/S being angels in a Clampish, Wish-like Universe, only not quite. For one thing Subaru doesn't go chibi in the night. Noooo. Other than that, yes, angels are genderless. However, Subaru goes all-male when he turns into mortal form. I don't need to even tell you Sei-chan's mortal gender now, do I?

We're having lots of fun with this story. Up next, Subaru develops a rather troubling ache in his groin and asks Seishirou to help him take care of it. Stay tuned to how Seishirou plans to corrupt our innocent angel.
