Chapter 4

The day had dawned filled with excitement for Subaru-first a monster had come charging into Seishirou's home, which the warrior had magnificently dispatched, then he'd come to a realization. He loved Seishirou. At least, he did if he was to believe Seishirou when he'd described the symptoms of being in love. Subaru glowed happily at the thought that he wouldn't be in trouble for being intimate with Seishirou. Being touched by the one he loved was a wonderful sensation and his body had reacted accordingly. Unfortunately, at the moment, they couldn't indulge, which left him with a slight problem with his wayward body.

He had no choice but to take Seishirou's remedy.

Quickly squirming out of his pants, he dashed into the shower and shivered under the cold water. It helped greatly in putting a curb to his misbehaving body part. Before long, he was contentedly soaping himself up for a good wash.

Seishirou sat cross-legged on the tiled floor, trying not to eyeball the lovely figure behind the shower curtain. He would hold onto his self-control until later that night when he would give into his desire and convince Subaru to do the same.

Before too long, Subaru was out of the shower and reaching for a towel to dry himself. "It's your turn," he said with a smile, trying not to let his teeth chatter from reaction to the cold water.

"Alright," he said, standing. Seishirou made his own shower quick, not really needing as much of a calm down as the other. He stepped out, toweled himself off and replaced his pants.

"Let's get some tea and I'll show you that spell," he suggested.

Subaru led the way into the kitchen, quickly dashing to a corner of the bedroom to pick up his discarded shirt from yesterday night. After lacing it up, he sat on the counter and watched Seishirou fix the steaming beverage. "I've never been one to do spells," he admitted wryly. "Most of what I do has been instinctive, like the healing and such."

"This one is fairly simple," Seishirou replied, turning around to hand him a mug of tea. He laid the paper scrap on the counter. "Hold your hand over the paper and repeat after me," he instructed, reciting a rather short string of words.

Subaru did as he was told and the paper glowed brightly in response. It transformed into a pure white dove and fluttered about the room, before perching on the counter, content to wait till the two were ready to follow it.

When the spell worked, Subaru exclaimed with pleasure. He lifted his face to Seishirou's to search for a sign of his approval.

"Very good," Seishirou nodded. "The shikigami is now at your command. Since you can't fly, have it follow us outside before leading us to where it came from."

Subaru rapidly gulped down his tea before standing up. "Shall we get started then?" he asked eagerly. As if sensing his haste, the shikigami lifted off and began to circle around the room, waiting for its release.

Seishirou nodded and it wasn't long before the pair exited the apartment building. The dove flitted around their heads, waiting for its next command. Seishirou idly wondered if he was much different from the little bird, tied to its master in a similar fashion.

Subaru failed to see Seishirou's unhappy expression. His eyes were focused on the shikigami. "Go, find the ones who started this," he commanded and started after it.

Their trip wasn't too far. Before long, the two angels arrived at a quiet residential district. There were few people on the street, which ran the length of a row of large expensive houses. The bird stopped before the gate of a residence that could, at the very least be called a mansion, and cooed at the two of them, as if indicating this was their destination.

"What do we do now, Seishirou-san?" Subaru asked, at a loss.

Seishirou shrugged. "We could go inside, confront the enemy head-on, which would be a bad idea in my... condition," he said delicately. "Or, I could show you a scrying spell and we could calculate our attack logically."

Subaru gulped. "A...a...attack?" he stuttered. He wasn't a fighter and was troubled by the idea that he would have to engage someone in battle.

"We may have no choice if the sender of the original shikigami is hostile," Seishirou insisted practically. He stifled himself from making a noise of exasperation. This was going to be hard without his powers and with a messenger angel who didn't know the first thing about warfare.

Subaru nodded reluctantly. "I hope I'll be up to it," he said nervously. Firming his resolve, he added, "Show me the spell then."

"We need to find a reflective surface," Seishirou muttered, looking around. "Let's go over there." Around the side of the house was a small puddle of muddy water left over from the last rainstorm. He waited for Subaru to start walking before moving to it.

Over at the puddle, Seishirou knelt and motioned for Subaru to do the same. "All you need to do is stare into the water, think very hard on what you want to see and recite this spell." Once again, Seishirou spoke a chant, this one, slightly more complex than the last. "Keep repeating it until you see what you want," he instructed.

Subaru followed the instructions exactly. He felt the slight surge as the magic took form and the muddy water cleared. "Oh!" he exclaimed softly when the vision revealed two handsome young men, entangled around each other kissing. Subaru blushed hotly at the voyeuristic thrill that sight gave him.

Seishirou smirked, so their opponents were lovers. It amused him terribly. He grinned and whispered into Subaru's ear, "Our sorcerers must be very much in love..." he said suggestively. "It might be best to go in while they're distracted. At least we'd be able to surprise them."

Subaru's blush stayed put while he nodded in agreement. "We'll just explain to them why they shouldn't try to harm us and go away. I'm sure they'll understand if we talk to them properly," he said innocently. "And I even know a spell to open doors!" Subaru's eyes sparkled with pride at his particular gift. As a messenger angel, no door was ever barred against him.

The warrior rolled his eyes and tried not to laugh at the innocence of his captor. He doubted that the plan would work, but he really wasn't in any position to argue. Still, while his fate was tied to the youngling, he supposed he ought to do something to help him, just in case.

"At least let me teach you an offensive spell in case something goes wrong," Seishirou insisted. He reached out and took Subaru's hands in his, folding slender fingers into position. "Hold your hands like this and point your index fingers at the target," he explained reciting the incantation. "It's a light electric spell. It should be just enough to stun the targets if we need to turn tail and run."

Subaru knew Seishirou was looking out for him and so he accepted the lesson meekly. When that was done, he stood up and held his hand to the door, willing it to open. With barely a clang, the great gates swung open and he strode in confidently. After a short ways past a well manicured garden, they entered the main house and found themselves walking down a long hallway. Subaru stopped by the door of the room he was sure his targets were in and tipped his head sidelong at Seishirou. "Should we knock?" he asked timidly in a whisper.

Seishirou shrugged. It wasn't like he expected the hair-brained operation to succeed anyway. "Go ahead, but I don't think they'll take kindly to us lurking around their house no matter what we do." He smirked, knowing that whatever they were about to do, it would at least be amusing.

Subaru knocked politely. "I'm sorry to bother you, but can we come in?" There were some hurried sounds of moaning hushed up before a dryly-annoyed voice sang out from the room beyond. "Go right ahead."

Subaru slid open the paper door and peeped in. The two guys they'd seen kissing just a while ago had apparently progressed quite a bit further. Subaru squeaked shyly and clapped a hand over his eyes, trying not to look at the bare bodies neatly outlined beneath the sheets.

"Who the hell are you and what are you doing in my home?!" One of the men demanded with a hard glare.

The older angel let out a chuckle, "You ought to know who we are. You're the ones who sent the damn shikigami that just about tore up my place." He folded his arms and gave the two a stern look.

Kamui sat up in bed, pushing his damp bangs out of his face. "I told you he'd be able to trace the shiki," he said, playfully smacking the side of his partner's head. He examined Seishirou, tilting his head a little. "Funny, you don't have an aura of magic about you... at all." This only got a dull groan of response from the older angel.

Fuuma had noted that fact already. His hand never ceased playing with his lover's skin under the sheets. "See, that other angel has him on a leash," he said, laughing out loud. Filled with confidence, he turned to Subaru. "For goodness sake, take your hand away from your eyes or you'll walk into a table. Have a seat. Introduce yourselves. I'm Fuuma and this here, is Kamui." Fuuma eyed the two with amusement. So their targets had come straight to them. This was too good to be true.

Subaru squeaked again timidly. He sidled over to a chair and plunked himself into it before replying, trying hard to keep his gaze focused on Fuuma's face. "This is Seishirou and I'm Subaru. We came to ask you to leave us alone. We can't grant miracles or anything like that you see, and we'll only be on earth for a little while. There's no need for you to be chasing us around."

Kamui giggled, his eyes finally seeing the thin thread that bound the two together. "I get it, it's a seal," he said, yelping as Fuuma pinched him under the sheets. He smacked the hand away. "Stop that!"

Seishirou rolled his eyes. "Listen, I get that fact that you must want us for some reason or another, but as you can tell, I'm no use to you while this," he pointed to the silver band around his neck, "is in place."

The younger man laughed again. "Oh that's quite alright," he said, looking to Fuuma to explain further.

Fuuma leaned over to kiss his lover on the cheek. Kamui was just so adorable. "Yeah, all we want is to extend a little invitation for you to stay with us-- permanently. The miracles we want to create we don't need you to actually do them. All we need is a little of your essence," Fuuma smirked at the two.

Subaru looked uncomprehendingly at Fuuma. "I don't understand, what do you mean?" When Fuuma didn't reply immediately, he turned to Seishirou to see if he understood.

"Angel's blood is a common ingredient found in a number of advanced spells and potions," Seishirou explained. "Keeping an angel captive would almost guarantee a sorcerer a long and prosperous life." He gave Fuuma a look. "And a rogue angel like myself would be a perfect target."

The younger sorcerer clapped his hands. "Perfect! And you're knowledgeable in the dark arts, which means you're bound to be older and therefore more potent." He smiled cheerfully as if talking about keeping slaves and practicing the dark arts was something perfectly normal.

Subaru protested, "No! You can't do that to Seishirou-san! I won't let you." Where Seishirou was concerned, Subaru had a proprietary attitude towards him. He was his mission and he wasn't going to give him up to any ambitious sorcerer.

"I don't see how you're going to stop us," Fuuma remarked dryly. He held up a free hand and within it was a bright globe of light.

Subaru stared at the gathering magic. He could tell it was not going to be a good idea to be hit by that thing. Acting on instinct, he released the spell that Seishirou had just taught him. His bolt hit the two on the bed first, showering them in a cloud of sparks.

Subaru lurched to his feet, horrified at what he had done. He clutched at Seishirou, wondering if they ought to flee.

The warrior angel was quick to react. He clamped a hand around Subaru's wrist and hissed, "Get us out of here." Thankfully, the younger angel got the message and bolted before the pair of sorcerers recovered to counterattack. Running at top speed, they bolted out of the house. Seishirou thanked whatever lucky stars shining on them that they had a head start, at least until Fuuma and Kamui got themselves dressed. "Well, what now?" Seishirou demanded, knowing that they'd be caught if they didn't think of something fast.

Subaru stared at him in panic. He had no clue about what to do, just that they had to keep moving. He allowed Seishirou to continue to hustle him along, practically dragging him down the street. He hadn't quite expected things to turn out quite like this. "Are human sorcerers always so unreasonable?" he asked indignantly. The thought of being permanently imprisoned so someone could milk him of his blood, and Seishirou's too, filled him with righteous rage.

"Yes," Seishirou called back, glad he was in reasonably good shape. The two angels continued hastily moving until they were out of the neighborhood and into a more populated area.

"In here," Seishirou said, nodding at a small comic book shop. "They're not going to attack us in front of a bunch of people," Seishirou explained, hoping that their pursuers weren't reckless enough to cause a disturbance.

The two of them walked in, Seishirou trying to look nonchalant, while Subaru slinked beside him, looking terribly panicked and suspicious to anyone who bothered to pay attention. Fortunately, no one stopped them. When they got to the end of some shelves, Subaru stopped and cowered in a corner. "We can't go back to your apartment, can we?" he asked. "I'm sorry, but I seem to have made a mess of things." Subaru never felt his lack of experience more than today. He never imagined such terrifying people existed.

Seishirou grabbed a book from the stacks and pretended to flip through it. He shot a sidelong glance at Subaru. "Just pretend to be a normal person and we'll wait here for a while," he said, sighing resignedly. "If you know how, extend your senses outward and see if you can sense them."

Subaru was glad for the pointer on what to do. It calmed his nervously beating heart and gave him a chance to focus on something other than his fear. Trying to act as nondescript as possible, he did as Seishirou suggested.

"I don't feel anything at all," he said eventually, letting his shoulders droop. "But we can't stay here all day!" He knew they were already attracting the attention of the people in the shop though he didn't know why.

"Calm down," Seishirou said in a low voice, discarding the book. "People are attracted to loud noises." With that, he thrust his hands into his pockets and started walking for the door, hoping desperately that Subaru would follow him, or else he was about to make an ass of himself in public.

Subaru blinked at Seishirou and quickly followed him. He jumped like a nervous rabbit when they returned to the street, but thankfully, there was no one remotely suspicious there to pounce on them. "What do we do now?" he asked, trying to keep the fear out of his voice. He didn't like being a target at all. For a moment, he wondered if he should release Seishirou from his bonds, if only so the warrior angel could protect them.

"We're going some place where we can hide out for a while until I can figure out a plan," Seishirou grumbled. "Then I'll teach you something to hide our presence." And the meaning of subtlety, he mentally added after that.
