Trigun Fan Fiction ❯ Humanity: Torn Between Loving It and Hating It ❯ Irritation ( Chapter 3 )
Knives woke up with a start when a door downstairs slammed. He groaned and rubbed his eyes before turning to the clock. He had fallen asleep just an hour ago. He sighed irritably and swung the covers off then swung his long legs over the bed.
"Why is it when I DO get some sleep, something has to happen and I have to wake up. I'm going to have to confront Vash about this little problem, then maybe everybody will shut up and stop making such unnecessary racket!" The blue-eyed Plant padded across the room and jerked the door open. Needless to say, he was not in a very good mood and Lord help those who decided to cross him at the moment.
He had one foot out in the hall when he heard voices getting closer. He narrowed his eyes and leaned up against the doorframe, his arms crossed tightly over his chest. Good, he thought, I'll just let them come to me instead.
It was Milly who was saying the most out of the little group. Knives arched an eyebrow. Funny, he though, that woman never says much unless someone new is around her or is just in an extra giddy mood. He groaned at that. The last thing he wanted today was Milly end-less chattering.
Then he heard another voice. Female, but not Meryl's. He knew he heard it somewhere before, but where? He listened carefully, he even turned his head to where his ear was facing in their direction. As he listened, he looked into his room. He saw his journal lying on the floor. An entry that he wrote struck him.
"You've got to be kidding me," he growled. He turned his head again and glared at the four as they rounded the corner. Vash saw him first and he squealed and ran over. Knives had the breath knocked out of him when Vash gave him a big, brotherly-love hug.
"Hey! It's nice that you're awake, brother! Guess what?! Kale is staying with us until she is able to get a job and live somewhere else, but lucky for us that won't be anytime soon." He smiled broadly and Knives replied with the evil eye. Vash's happy face dropped.
"Heh, now," he gave Kale his full attention and said in a bored and irritated tone, "It's bad enough I'm forced to live here with you two stinking humans, but I absolutely refuse to have HER live here, too!" Kale gave a hurt expression and hid behind Milly. Knives congratulated himself on that.
Meryl was the first to speak up. She stalked over to Vash's brother and poked his chest after every few words she said.
"Now listen here, bucko! If it just WEREN'T for Vash, I would have shot you in the head the day he brought you here while you were still unconscious. It's bad enough that you DO live here, but I absolutely won't allow you to say what we can and can't do!
"You don't own us Knives," she made sure to emphasize his name, "so I suggest you drop the whole `King of the Castle' act and get over the fact that you live with us `humans'! Kale is staying here whether you want to bitch about it or not! Come Kale! You'll be sleeping with Milly."
Knives, speechless at Meryl's words and shocked that she even touched him, watched as Kale slowly edged her way around Milly's tall figure and walked over to Meryl. Meryl simply grabbed the young woman's hand and tugged her into the room next to hers and Vash's, but across the hall from Knives'. Milly smiled and followed after.
She closed the door, leaving Knives and Vash out in the now lonely hall. Vash blinked then smiled at his brother, who just gave him a look that said, `how can you actually LIKE that woman?' Vash returned a look that replied, `love, not like. One of these days you'll find a woman and learn that they're great company.' He turned and walked into his room, closing the door behind him.
"I can't believe this," he grumbled angrily then walked into his own room, making sure to slam it extra hard, knowing Meryl hated it when he did. He sat down on his bed and picked up his journal and pen again. Turning to the next page he began writing.
~*~*~Well, I should have seen this coming. Kale, that human girl, is now taking up the extra bed in Milly's room. Why is that I must be tortured like this? I feel as if I'm living Hell with those demons surrounding me, trying to suffocate me.
Are you toying with me fate? Are you getting revenge on all those I have killed? On those that I enjoyed watching as they died slowly? I can see why Vash insists on keeping me here. I have started to adapt to the women of the household, but bringing in another? Why this one in particular? Have I been all that horrible?
So many important questions, no intelligent answers to fulfil them. It seems I must figure them out for myself. But I will do this some other time. I am in need of rest and I hope that Vash and Meryl will leave each other alone tonight. It's embarrassing enough to know that they have intense feelings for each other, but to hear them express those feelings every other night is just……. ugh! I'm dropping the subject now!~*~*~
Knives closed the journal and stared at it's covering for a moment. He ran a finger over it gently, tracing the long wrinkles. He smiled inside at the memory of getting the gift on his birthday, while still living on the SEEDS ship. He was a thinker and he was glad that Vash noticed. He was always in need of writing certain things down, but it was such a hassle to keep the things he had written organized and neat.
Knives leaned over and placed the journal and pen back in the drawer and slowly closed it. He then reached up to switch off the lamp. He slid under the covers and closed his eyes, slowly drifting to sleep.
Kale watched as Meryl said her goodnights and closed the door as she walked out. She heard the door of the room beside them open then close. She sat down on the twin-sized bed that was separated from Milly's bed by the nightstand that sat between them. Milly combed her hair as she hummed gently.
"I'm very grateful for yours, Meryl's and Vash's hospitality, Milly. I don't know what I would have done if I had never met you three or the fact that you may have never moved here." Kale whispered. Milly put the comb down and turned.
"Don't worry, Kale. You'll love it here, honestly! With the exception of Mr. Knives, you may never want to leave. I keep everything well organized, Meryl helps out too, Vash is an excellent cook, and Knives, well, you don't have to worry about him really. He mostly stays in his room. Every now and then I sneak peeks in his room.
"I'm really astonished that he keeps it well cleaned! I really wish he wasn't so mean and distant though. He could be a very successful man if he would learn to trust us. I really don't know why he hate's us so much. I mean, sometimes I get the feeling someone did something really horrible to him when he was still just a boy. I really want an answer, but I'm afraid of angering him so I just leave him alone. It might be wise that you do the same, too. He only allows Vash near him." Kale nodded slightly. Milly smiled and turned off the lamp then slid in her bed.
"You should get some rest, Kale. It'll be dawn soon and Meryl and I have to get up early to go shopping. Well, g'night!" She said with a yawn. Kale said her goodnights before slipping under her covers, but she didn't go to sleep right away. She was still frightened at the fact that someone was out to kill her and she didn't even know why!
"Oh dad, I wish you were still here. At least things would still be going right for a change." She closed her eyes and let out a deep breath before falling asleep.
