Night came sooner than expected, but no one was complaining. Knives was sitting up on the windowsill, staring out into the extending desert. It was quiet, save for the commotion down in the living room. Everyone was still awake, but he refused to go down and join them, even with Vash's obnoxious begging.

Suddenly there was a pounding on his door and the pale blonde turned to look at the door with an irritated expression. He demanded that everyone to knock on his door, but he didn't want them to try to bust it down!

The door opened and his brother stood there with a happy smile on his face. Knives narrowed his eyes and sneered. Every time Vash had that look and directed it to him out of the blue it meant he was going to do something that he wasn't going to like.

"What?" he snapped. Vash's smiled widened and he walked over to Knives, grabbed his arm and started dragging him out of his room. Knives, startled at the sudden action, started struggling and cursing his twin out.

"Vash! What the hell are you doing?! Let me go this instant!!"

"We're going to the saloon tonight! Kale wanted to visit a friend there and we're going!" Knives's blood boiled at the mention of the woman. Sometimes he just wanted to strangle her for even staying around and other times he wanted to strangle Vash for even keeping him here.

"What?! I am not going! Never! Let go of my, Vash!" Vash turned and gave him a pleading look.

"Oh, please? C'mon! Gosh, you act if you're going to die every time you come in contact with other people!" Just then a thought hit Vash. He gave a sly smirk and, letting go of his brother, started a slow walk down the hall.

"I mean, God, I never knew you were so afraid of `humans', brother!"

"What?! I'm not-" Knives started, balling his hands into tight fists.

"It's becoming clear now! You're scared of these people! Man, I never noticed till now," Vash turned his head slightly and winked, pointing his index finger up then at Knives, "but don't worry, dear brother! You have ol' Vash here to protect ya!" He turned and continued down the hall, but didn't make it far when a hand clamped down on his shoulder.

"Vash . . ." Knives said in a low, dangerous tone. Vash's eye twitched and he smiled sheepishly. He heard the click of his brother's gun and suddenly he got stabbed in the back with it.

"I will give you a head start, dear Vash. By the time I stop at the count of three you had better be out of the way because not only did you anger me but have said the few words that has to be the worst insult in all the world," Knives stated softly, calmly, but full of threat.

"Aw, c'mon, Knives! I-I didn't mean it! You know that I-"

"One . . ."

"Knives! Wait!"

"Two . . ." Knives cocked his gun.

"Let's talk about this, bro!" Vash turned and started backing up with his hands up like a shield.

"Three . . ."

Down in the den Meryl, Milly, and Kale sat on the couch, waiting for Vash and Knives. Kale had bandaged her arm tightly with the help of Milly.

"You're healing faster than anyone I've known, Miss Kale!" Milly said in astonishment. Kale sat back and smiled a little.

"Yeah, I've been known to be a fast healer."

"Ugh, what is taking him so long?! Honestly, why do we have to bring his maniac brother along? He's just going to insult us every step of the way!" Meryl grumbled.

"Come one, Meryl. He isn't all THAT bad," Kale stated quietly. Meryl and Milly looked at her, then at each other.

"Kale, how can you possibly say that about the very man who SHOT you?!" Meryl screeched. Kale cringed at the memory and looked down at her hands.

"You don't need to remind me, but you don't know what he's like when it's just him and me. Sure we got off on a rough start in the beginning, but he hasn't been all that horrible, at least not with me." A light blush ran over her cheeks and nose.

"Are you telling me that you actually . . . LIKE that psycho?!" Kale blinked and turned her gaze away, the blush deepening. Milly grinned and clapped her hands together.

"Oh that's so wonderful! Kale has a crush!"

"I didn't say I had a crush! I just like him as a friend!" She said, her cheeks burning.

"Please, how can anyone like him be considered a `friend'?" Meryl argued.

"Well-" The young woman started, but gunshots echoed throughout the house. The girls screamed and huddle together when they heard Vash yelping and saw him fly down the stairs, his brother close behind.

Meryl arched an eyebrow at Kale in a silent `Friend, huh?'. Kale looked at the floor and Vash fell in front of them, patting various places where he had been shot.

"Jeez Knives! Those sting!" He whined. The girls looked at Vash, dumbfounded because he didn't have any bleeding wounds, or any wounds at all for that matter. They all looked up at Knives to see him chuckling and reloading his gun.

"Well, next time I won't go so easy on you. Rubber bullets are a hell of a lot better than real ones and I still have to take revenge on you for keeping me bedridden for half a year. Now get up, you sissy. We leave now." With that he turned and walked out of the house.

Kale looked at Vash who was stilling whining with a river of tears running down his face. She started to crack up and followed after Knives.
