She leaned back on her chair, looking up at the ceiling with a look of she tapped her chin, carefully going over the words in her head, how was she going to explain this to the insurance company? Wiggling her fingers she stared at the typewriter, frustrated she got up and stretched, yawning loudly she left the room. Walking towards the kitchen she grabbed a small pan to boil water in. Sitting down on a worn out chair she looked out the window in the kitchen near the stove. It's been more than a month and he has yet to return. Bernadally was not going to be happy with their report, she had to send it in today, but, since she has had no contact or any acknowledgement of his whereabouts she had no new information to give the insurance agency, their paychecks had been cut in half since the last report and they could hardly afford the rent and food at the moment, she was down to her last penny, they were tight on cash and running out fast, happily though she was recently hired at the second bar in this town. Though, it was filled with lowlifes, and many who had no respect towards women, she really had no choice, it was the only job available for her at the moment. Hearing the water boil she looked away, getting up from her seat she poured a cup of boiling water, mixed it with coffee and added sugar, leaning on the sink she drank it, already feeling better she looked up at the clock.

“Better get to work,”

Walking up the stairs towards her room, she walked towards her closet, taking out the waitress dress she grimaced, she hated the dam dress, but it was better than nothing. Closing the closet she put it on, the only good thing about working there was that she didn't have to work in the afternoon, when it really got bad. She sometimes wondered if it was really worth it staying and waiting for him, she looked at her typewriter for a few seconds before walking out the door, the thought still lingering in her head telling her no.

But her heart told her otherwise

She watched the two drunks leave with an off tune laughter, one of them had the nerve to touch her but she swerved out of there reach, nearly dropping the beer on her plate and onto a customer who only grumbled under his breath. She watched the clock strike four, walking to the back she took off her apron, ready to depart, when Terry, a well built up man, walked over to her, his brown hair sweaty and his shirt dirty form cleaning beer mugs,

“Mer, you're on night shift now”

She paused, a sickening feeling twisted her stomach,

“Why?”

“One of the night shift waitresses quit, so we need a replacement for the night since it's the time most customers come in,”

She grimaced, he would probably fire her if she said no,

“Sure Terry”

“That a girl, now run along, I expect to see you here tomorrow at five”

He'd waved her off, she sighed as she took off her apron and walked home, tired, and smelling of puke and beer she quickly took a bath, and started dinner. The door squeaked opened, and she thought it was Millie, coming early from work, usually she stayed a few minutes more to study the tunnels and measure how long it would take for them to finish,

“Dinner will be ready in a minute Millie, take a seat,”

That was when, a hoarse voice spoke, so weak it made her freeze and drop her spoon,

“Meryl…”

She turned around, and saw something that made her almost shed tears of joy

Vash the stampede, though wearily eyed and slumped over he gave her a weary smile, that's when she realized the man slumped on Vash's Shoulder, Who he later explained to be Knives, his brother,

Who knew this was just the begging of a horrible nightmare?
