Chatper One: Awakening
The dust never settled. After July vanished into nothingness and the name Vash the Stampede became psuenonomous with disaster. The blind faith people had that humans were an immortal species was decimated in a blinding light. If people again entertained notions of immortality a glance at the scarred moon was all that was needed to remind them. Their fragile illusions broke apart so easily. The legend of the vanished city and the gunslinger who had caused it echoed around the world. Its reverberations still resounding today. Lost July. Vash the Stampede.
Vash the Stampede.
'vash...'
'vash where are...'
'vash i'm so cold....'
'so alone.....vash...'
The dust never settled. Not even after the legendary gunman had vanished. Life had gone on, people had continued to prosper and grow, spreading across the desert planet. Like a disease. Like a virus. The bitterness never receeded, it didn't fade.
'vash....where did you go...?'
'why did you leave me....'
It was broken. Under the great blueblack globe, the skies bleeding into the horizon. A vacantness, an omnipotent emptiness fills the void.It all seemed so hopeless, so pointless. In the pregnant silence the question echoed as if spoken aloud.
'where did you go...?'
Slowly the grains shifted, tiny clicks echoeing loudly as they slid against each other. Cascadeing down the side of the dune. Sand. Sand on his arms, sand on his legs, his torso, his chest. Sand in his hair, on his face, in his eyes, in his lungs. He couldn't breathe, couldn't speak, couldn't scream. He couldn't move. The sand trickled softly across his chest and side spilling into the concave between his palm and thumb. The stillness around him was crushing. Infinate. Bruising. Forcing itself deep inside his mind where he was alone with his terrifying thoughts.
'Rem!!'
'Bring her back!! Bring Rem back!!!'
The sand slowly filled his palm, the wind softly stirring the short strands of hair that nearly matched the sand it was intertwined with.
'Rem! Rem!!!'
'why...'
His fingers twitched and the sand protested the sudden disturbance sliding between his fingers.
'why her.....why couldn't you love me....'
'Rem!!!'
His hand shifted pressing flat against the grains, crushing them.
'why...why couldn't you love me..'
'vash....'
'like you loved her...'
In the distance a gunshot exploded the silence. Pale blue eyes snapped open, the hand constricting on the sand. Pain. So much pain. The shock of seeing the barrell coming down, pointing at him. The determination behind teal green eyes. And then pain. Ripping through him, through his shoulders, his chest, his leg. His hand groped upwards across his chest to the ragged hole there, dipping his finger inside to brush the scared flesh. Scars. He was scarred now. Marked. The rage boiled inside him.
'i gave you such a beautiful dream......such a beautiful weapon....'
Turning his head slowly he looked east to where orange light was beginning to spill over he horizon. Braceing his hand he slowly rose to a sitting position, sand pouring off his form.
'i wanted to build you an eden......a place for the two of us......where humans couldn't destroy it with their greed...where you would love me just as much......no more...than you loved that human woman.....'
Bringing his hands up he covered his face with them.
'vash...'
'why....why won't you stay with me.....why won't....you accept who i am....who you are.....you've betrayed me....again...'
The light of the new dawn sun glinted maliciously in the eyes that shone from between parted fingers.
'....rejected me....hurt me....shot me with the gift i gave to you......tried to kill me.....your own brother...'
The sand rained as he slowly rose to his feet the sun shadowing his form casting a sinister shadow.
"you will pay....my dear brother....you will -pay-."
