Chapter 2: An Old Friend, or A New Enemy?

" Hey Vash!" Wolfwood waved and smiled

" Wolfwood!" Millie ran out of the bar and straight into his arms sharing a passionate kiss

" I missed you too." Wolfwood smiled

" Wolfwood, you're alive." Vash said amazed

" That's the same thing I said when I found out." He laughed scratching his head

" You see Vash the Stampede" Child folded her arms, " My Master has had an eye on you for quite a while."

" So he's your Dad?" Vash asked quizzically, " Well I guess you two kind of look alike."

" No he is not! When I said father I meant in a priest like manner you needle noggin idiot!" At that she clasped a hand on her mouth, " I believe his personality has rubbed off on me."

They all laughed including Legato, " So what is your choice now Vash the Stampede."

" Yeah Vash, our master only wants to make this world a better place, just like you envisioned. Without stealing, killing, hatred, all the things that make this place such a hellhole."

Vash rubbed chin, " I must be dreaming."

" No dream." Legato said, " Come with us, let's make this planet home for all of us."

Vash looked at Legato in wonder. He really has changed, he actually looks happy. " What did they do to you Legato?"

" They purified me Vash, Master has made me whole and happy. For once, I live my life without sorrow and suffering."

" Well let me go get Meryl and we can all sit around and talk about this. I want to know more about your master."

" Young Lady has already retrieved Meryl, they should be here soon. But as far as my Master goes, It is most wonderful. There are not words beautiful enough to describe it." Child sighed

" It?"

" Yes, there is no true identification for what Master is." Legato quoted religiously, " So wonderful, so fulfilling. You must feel Its love, that love is like no other."

" He's right Vash," Wolfwood spoke up, " once your purified, you'll be able to see all that is right and all that is wrong in the world. Please join us."

" Vash!" Meryl screamed from the roof of the building Wolfwood was under.

She was tied up, and standing beside her was a teenage girl. She had purple hair and violet eyes much like Child. But she wore a tight blue and white dress that wondered a little bit past her knees. There was a large opening in the shape of an oval that reached from underneath her breast to an inch below her navel. Black boots that came up to her knees finished the outfit. She seemed like an older version of Child.

" Sorry about tying up your lover," she said in a sultry voice, " but she didn't want to come willingly and I was instructed to bring her here. So when push came shove…" she shoved Meryl off he building

" Meryl!" Vash screamed and began to run toward a falling Meryl

Wolfwood intervened and caught a startled Meryl; " Did you really think we'd let her fall?"

Young Lady jumped down; " We are not here to hurt anyone."

Wolfwood untied Meryl as she stared at him in awe, " Wolfwood you're alive."

" Yeah, everyone's been sayin' that today." He laughed sweetly

As soon as she was untied, she hugged Wolfwood and began to cry, " But how?"

" I would love to explain, but let's get out of this hot sun first." Child replied

They all nodded in agreement and retreated to the bar. All the customers had evacuated upon hearing that Vash the Stampede was in town.

" A drink please." Wolfwood ordered to the frightened bar tender then looked back at Vash

They were seated around a small table. Millie sate in Wolfwood's lap while Child sat in Legato's and Meryl and Young Lady had their own chairs.

" So how did this happen?" Vash asked, the question that was on both Meryl and Millie's mind

" A Redeemer was used right after Nicholas died in the church. Preserving his body and resurrecting it later after you left."

" What's a Redeemer?" Meryl asked skeptically

" A small needle that is inserted in the body immediately after death." Young Lady answered

" So all it took was a needle?" Millie asked

" No my dear, it's the chemical in the needle." Nicholas kissed her cheek, " But enough about that, what I really want to know is if you still have my Punisher?"

" Yeah, of course. We would never get rid of that. In fact, I used it to defeat Knives." Vash boasted

Wolfwood nodded his head approvingly, " Always thought you could do some awesome things with it in your hands."

" So where do we go from here?" Vash asked

" It all depends on you." Child spoke " What do you want to do?"

" I don't know, I'd like to say I trust you. But you're talking about `changing' the human race. What do you mean? How?"

" All will be explained by Master." Child twirled a lock of Legato's hair between her fingers, " But we must retrieve your brother first."

" You know once he's free, there will be trouble."

" No, Woman and Old Hag will keep him unconscious till we reach home and purify you both. We must do you both at the same time or the results will be…tragic."

" Purify?" Meryl asked

" Yes." Legato smiled, " That when Master takes away all you pain, hate, and hurt. He make you pure."

" Sounds great to me, I like it. Let's do it Mr. Vash, Meryl." Millie coaxed

" Who side are you on anyway?!" Meryl asked

" There are no sides here." Young Lady crossed her legs putting a hand on the table, " Only life and love of one planet."

" Sounds like a religious cult if you ask me." Meryl suspicious

" I said the same thing." Wolfwood lowered his head, " But now I'm pure, and with Millie at my side, I'll be complete."

" Oh Nicholas." Millie hugged Wolfwood

" I want to meet your master. Master. Come to think about it, if he's so great why does he make you call him Master." Meryl asked

" Because that is the name we've chosen for It. It's only proper." Child smiled

" Fine, I'll help, it sounds like a worthy cause." Vash agreed

" But Vash…" Meryl gripped his arm

" But if anything funny happens, it's all over." Vash warned

" Agreed." Both Child and Young Lady nodded

" Let's celebrate!" Nicholas yelled, " Bar tender, drinks all around."

The bar tender nodded and began to pour the drinks.

" None for you little lady, children shouldn't drink alcohol. Maybe they have some juice or something." Vash offered

" I am not a child, in fact, I'm almost as old as you. Master gave me eternal youth and innocence."

" And that's why you shouldn't drink." Wolfwood laughed

Child just glared and lied her head on Legato's chest.

" I'd like to talk to Vash alone for a moment." Meryl said as the drinks were being served

Vash looked at her with a questioning gaze and stood. Meryl began walking to the back of the bar.

" Mr. Vash." Millie whispered, " Ask her!"

Vash just rubbed the back of his head and smiled, then followed Meryl. When he arrived at her side she pulled him close enough that they almost kissed.

" I don't trust them Vash."

" I know, there's something fishy about this thing. It's too, too…"

" Too good to be true. I know, we have to keep an eye. I hate it, but Millie might get hurt."

Vash nodded, and then they returned to the group who was laughing at one of Nicholas's jokes. Vash and Meryl sat back down.

" I'm glad you've agreed to help us." Child leaned over and kissed Vash's cheek and returned to Legato's chest.

" Glad to help." Vash smiled

The next day they set out to retrieve Knives. Nicholas on his bike with Millie while Vash, Meryl, Child, Young Lady, and Legato rode in a car.

Nicholas pulled up to Vash's side talking to him as he drove, " So how far is this place?"

" A couple hundred iles more, don't worry, we'll be there soon enough. So where's these two ladies you were talking about?"

" They'll meet us there." Child answered, " But it will be dark soon and I would like to settle down and rest, wouldn't you Vash?"

" Don't worry, I can drive through the night."

" But you must be rested for the next ordeal. Retrieving your brother is just the half of it."

" What's the other half?"

" That's up to Master. But I wouldn't worry about it if I were you."

Vash just turned his attention back to driving, but kept alert. He looked over at Meryl and could see the uneasiness in her eyes; she was disturbed by the past events as well. After about eighty iles, they stopped and got a motel in the nearest town, New Texas. Again they paired off but it was uneven. Young Lady ended up having a room to herself, but she was delighted, or she appeared to be.

Vash and Meryl's room

Meryl brushed her teeth as Vash was just climbing out of the shower.

She spat and looked at Vash, " I'm worried Vash."

" I know, but don't. Whatever is going on, I'll find out about it and stop any evil plan they may have."

Meryl nodded still a little unsure, " Now onto something a little more important."

" What?"

" Meryl would you…uh…would you do me the honor of… um, um, scratching my back."

All Meryl could do was look at Vash quizzically, " Are you okay Vash? Maybe Child was right, you need rest."

" Forget about it." Vash gathered Meryl into his arms, " We're all alone, let's take advantage of it."

Meryl smiled and kissed Vash sweetly.

Wolfwood and Millie's room

Millie lay in the bed stroking Wolfwood's chest.

" I missed you so much Nicholas."

" And I missed you my darling."

" I was so sad when you…went away, but now that you're back, I know everything will be okay."

" Yeah."

" So what's going to happen after we get Knives? Will Meryl and I have to get purified?"

" Nope."

" Why not?"

" Don't think about it right now Millie, let's just cherish this time together. I wanted to hold you like this for so long."

" All right."

Legato and Child's room

" Legato."

" Yes."

" Do you know what you'll do after Master's plan is completed?"

" Not exactly. Maybe I'll die."

" Why?!", Legato looked at Child surprised by her outburst, " What will I do without you Legato? Who will take care of me?"

" Master will take care of you."

Child crawled out of the chair she had been siting in and beside Legato on the bed.

" You can't die Legato, I'll be all alone."

Legato sighed, " Master will keep you company."

" But I want your company." Child climbed into his lap, " You are my father Legato, my protector."

Legato hugged Child to him and felt the love she held for him, pour into his very soul, " Then I believe I will stay on as your guardian."

" Good." She twirled a lock of his hair around her small finger

" And when you grow up, what will you do?"

" I will never grow old, I will stay young and innocent, just like you will stay like you are till you decide to die. That was Master's gift to you, he took away your suffering and suspended you in self-content. And when you are ready to die, you will. But you can't be ready, I need you."

" An for some strange reason, I feel that I need you."

" Yes, we go hand in hand, eternally Father and Daughter."

Young Lady's room

Young Lady sat on her bed in a meditative state.

" Yes Master, we have Vash the Stampede. Knives will soon follow suit." The room was quiet except for Young Lady's voice, " Yes, I will tell Child of the alterations. I love you as well Master, I will be returning to you soon. Although Nicholas is becoming a problem. He supposed to be linked to me like Legato is to Child, but instead he spends his time with that human woman Millie. May I kill her?" Silence once more, " Alright then Master, I will wait till the time is right, then Nicholas D. Wolfwood will be mine. Goodnight Master."

Young Lady turned off her lamp and crawled under the sheets of her bed, ready to dream of Wolfwood.

Yeah, yeah I know. Legato seemed like a child molester there for a second. But I promise the relationship between him and Child is strictly Father, Daughter. So for all you sickos out there that thought is was something else…. HA HA! Anyway, do you detect a hint of jealous in the story? THE PLOT THICKENS!
