Meryl Stryfe, having summoned up enough self-confidence to overcome her anxiety, sought out Vash the Stampede to admit her feelings for him. She found the blond gunman at Inspiration Point, watching the suns set.

"Vash, I…"

"What is it?" he asked, his eyes quizzical. //It must be important for her to come all this way. And without Milly and Wolfwood along too.// The legendary gunman waited for her response, noticing that the normally confident woman was behaving anxiously. He gestured for Meryl to sit down beside him.

Meryl's heartbeat quickened, racing faster than the out-of-control sand steamer she had been on that had been hijacked by Brilliant Dynamites Neon. Small beads of perspiration formed on her forehead. Moving closer to the man increased her anxiety, but she needed to tell him the truth.

The man moved sideways about a foot, allowing Meryl enough room to sit beside him. She sat down and turned to face Vash the Stampede. Taking a deep breath, Meryl spoke softly, "We've known each other for a while now. At first, you were just an assignment for my job. But as I've gotten to know you, you've become my friend. Someone I care for a lot. I…"

Vash gazed at her, an anticipatory expression on his face.

Not wanting to let the pause drag on, "I *love* you, Vash!" Meryl blurted out. She waited nervously for any reaction from the man she just poured her heart out to. //Say something, please, Vash// She silently implored.

Vash was surprised by Meryl's admission. To him, Meryl was an attractive woman who had traveled with him for quite a while. She was highly confident, but a tad nagging at times. He liked teasing her to provoke a reaction from her. Their relationship was a study of contrasts, a fun-loving friendship at times, yet adversarial at others. Could there be something else between them?

Vash contemplated Meryl's confession. //But love? If I get involved with someone, they'll end up getting hurt. Even my "family" gets hurt. Rem was my family. Lina and her grandma seemed like family. Those bandits almost hurt Lina not too long ago. I'd feel guilty if somebody injured her.//

Vash was no innocent, but he certainly appreciated the finer points of the feminine form, and the woman sitting beside him possessed those attributes.

Meryl's blue-gray eyes were beseeching for an answer. The silence was getting unbearable for her, even it only minutes had passed. It seemed like an eternity to her.

"Meryl…" Vash said, gently, touching her hand.

"What?" the petite investigator responded, her voice hopeful.

"I didn't know you felt that way about me. It's flattering. You're a wonderful woman, Meryl. And it is certainty an honor to be with…"

Meryl's face lit up when she heard his words. //You've told him. Now show him!//

Her inner voice urged.

"Shut up and kiss me," she whispered as the dark-haired woman initiated the passionate liplock. She moved in quickly and pressed her lips to Vash's mouth.

Vash glanced upwards at the orange and red hues streaked across the sky.

What was the saying Rem had told him? "Red skies at night, sailors' delight." He grinned. This was certainly going to be a night filled with delight.

Meanwhile, outside of the restaurant in Kasted City where Milly was enjoying having a pleasant conversation with Wolfwood after Meryl hastily left, the traveling preacher asked Milly about Meryl's sudden departure. "Oh, Meryl went to tell Mr. Vash that she has the hots for him," Milly giggled.

Wolfwood took a drag on his cigarette and said with a sly grin, "Vash is gonna get lucky tonight."

Milly smiled at Wolfwood. "Are you feeling lucky, Mr. Priest?"

The handsome preacher was caught off-guard by Milly's forward remark. "Huh?" but then he quickly recovered his composure. //I'm enjoying this new side of Milly. She's a lot more outspoken // He observed of the brunette's behavior.

"Do you have any plans for tonight? Do you want to see a movie?"

Before Milly could answer, her stomach growled. She smiled, embarrassed. "Uh, could we have dinner first?" she suggested.

"Sure thing. Dinner first, then a movie. The Angst Theater is showing 'A Brother's Sorrow'."

"Where will we eat?" Milly said, already looking forward to the meal.

"I know of a nice little place on the outskirts of town. I ran across it on a previous visit here," Wolfwood replied.

"Do they have good food?"

"Yes. Harry's Place is renowned for its desserts,"

"Pudding…" Milly said, her voice trailing off as her thoughts turned to one of her vices, "Chocolate pudding."

"Oh, the things they can do with pudding," Wolfwood remarked, a slightly suggestive tone in his voice.

"Like what?" Milly asked innocently, her daydreaming detour ended.

"Never mind," the cigarette smoker answered.

Milly pointed to the saloon across the street. "Maybe after the movie we could stop there for a nightcap?"

"Would you try to get me drunk?" Wolfwood asked, jokingly.

"Mr. Priest, you're silly," Milly said, good-naturedly.

"Don't tempt me," he said under his breath, leering at the buxom brunette.

"Before we leave for dinner I have to stop off at the hotel to freshen up and drop off this paperwork in my room," indicating her briefcase on the seat next to her. "I also have to take back Meryl's cloak. She ran off without it," Milly added.

"Okay. I'll meet you downstairs. I have to put away all of the donations I collected," Wolfwood stated, hefting the church-shaped confessional full of coins.

The pair departed en route to what would be an entertaining evening.

A breathless Meryl Stryfe broke the kiss with Vash the Stampede, who had a surprised expression on his face. She continued, gently opening his inviting lips with her tongue, teasing, and probing. Their tongues darted about, engaged in a playful oral duel

Meryl tingled with arousal. Her cheeks were flushed, her breathing more ragged.

This moment was something she had only dreamed about, finally being intimate with a man whom she truly loved. Though not as experienced in the art of lovemaking, she felt that Vash as the lover who would fulfill her desires.

Vash gazed into her blue-gray eyes, watching the displays of pent-up passion that the insurance investigator had hidden until now. It was certainly a dramatic change from the reserved professional who quoted insurance regulations into the sultry woman whispering into his ear.

The couple was in a tight embrace, kissing under the impending nightfall. Meryl wondered how far should she go //You've come this far. Go for it,// her inner voice answered. She moved forward, leaning into Vash's chest, and said in a low voice, "More." sultry

Her forward motion pushed Vash, laying him flat against the jagged surface of the boulder, which rubbed against his back, causing some irritation. "Ouch," he muttered.

Meryl stopped as Vash winced in pain. "What's wrong?" she asked. Her voice was concerned, but her eyebrows showed the annoyance at having their romantic interlude interrupted.

"That damn rock is rubbing me the wrong way. It's uncomfortable," Vash said.

"I could kiss it and make it feel better," Meryl purred, giving her new lover a sexy smile. "What if you lay your coat on the ground and we'll use it as a makeshift blanket?"

Vash agreed with her suggestion. He stood up, removed his scarlet duster, and spread it over the dusty ground, which scattered some loose pebbles. "Madam," he said, bowing towards Meryl, "your table is ready."

Meryl curtsied in response to his chivalrous act. As she knelt down on the impromptu blanket, her eyes devoured the sight of the Humanoid Typhoon pulling off his silk shirt over his head and relishing his lean muscular frame.

The pair embraced again. Meryl ran her hands up and down his back, fingertips dancing in a light caress while Vash nuzzled against her neck.

He moved his head and trailed a path of gentle kisses down her slim neck, eliciting a soft moan from the woman. Vash paused, wondering if he should progress any further.

"Don't stop," Meryl whispered as Vash slowly unbuttoned her white cotton blouse. She had gone beyond any turning point now. A small doubt remained in her mind though. Meryl was very self-conscious of her body; her breasts weren't very large. She was jealous of her associate, Milly Thompson, who constantly received comments like "Nice rack" from men admiring her shapely figure. //I hope he's not one of those breast-obsessed guys who slobber at the sight of a girl with big boobs because that's not me.//

She removed her blouse and reached behind her to unfasten her bra, which dropped silently to the blanket. Anxiety raced through Meryl's mind as she bared her chest to her lover.

Emerald eyes lingered on the sight of the topless woman before him. Even though her breasts were small, they were firm and nicely proportioned for her petite figure, fitting nicely into his hand as he cupped the fleshy mounds tenderly. The blond man focused on her stiffening pink nipples, which looked like ripe strawberries topping a parfait. He flicked his tongue against the swollen tips, alternating between the left and right breasts.

Pleasure suffused her face as her body reacted to his seductive touch. She felt a growing dampness in her nether lips; her skin tingled with his caresses. Snuggling closer to Vash, her hand brushed against the hardening bulge in his dark pants and she smiled at the image of his erection being released, glistening and ready for action.

She hurriedly stripped off the rest of her clothes while Vash undid the numerous buckles of his outfit. Horny and impatient, Meryl hungrily eyed the impressive length of his cock. Her left hand fondled her clit, increasing her desire while with her right hand Meryl stroked his erection lightly.

Vash was lost in his own world, his eyes closed.

Meryl looked up at him and saw the stupid, satisfied look on her lover's face. "Vash?"

He opened his eyes "What?" he replied, distracted.

"Did you bring any protection?" she asked, hopefully.

Vash looked down, a sheepish expression on his face.

A thin sheen of sweat covered their torsos as they kissed deeply and sensuously, lost in passion's grip.

Some time later, basking in the afterglow of intimacy, Meryl cuddled against Vash's chest, seeking his warmth as the evening temperatures cooled. She looked up into the nighttime sky, at the stars sparkling like diamonds placed on a swath of black velvet. "The stars are beautiful tonight," Meryl said.

"And so are you," Vash whispered lovingly, kissing his lover on the forehead.

The dark-haired beauty sighed as Vash brought his arm around her breasts, brushing against her sensitive nipples, and drawing her into an intimate embrace. "I wish this moment would last forever," she said.

Vash nodded, gazing at the woman nestled in his arms, noting how the moonlight shimmered in her ebony hair.

Their romantic encounter under the starlit sky was destined to be fateful. Happiness reigned momentarily, but everlasting bliss would prove to be elusive.
