"Wha… What!? Vash! Of all the idiotic suggestions! Why would I want to share a bed with the biggest womanizer of all Gunsmoke! The nerve of you!" Meryl's face was tinged with a light pink as she glared down at Vash. Yet the words that escaped her mouth were nothing like the words that consumed her mind. Nearly every fiber within her screamed to say yes, to accept his offer, to share such an intimate space with her gunman. But she didn't.

"Aww, come on, missy! I was just offering... It's not my fault you got all defensive and such. This is just my luck…" Vash drew his face into a soft pout. So he was flirtatious… That didn't mean he tried to get in bed with just any woman who walked by. Hell, he'd never actually been so lucky before. Bad luck always came his way, and any girl who got that close to him was bound to get in trouble too. Nah, any girl that special wouldn't have been worth the risk…

Meryl just stared at Vash's back, biting her lower lip slightly. "Whaddaya mean, just your luck? It's not like you couldn't go out there and bag another innocent lady whenever you wanted, right? Ugh, just the thought of it makes me wonder if I should let you use my bed at all." Meryl twisted her face into mock disgust, sticking her tongue out slightly as she did.

"Now that hurts, Meryl. Do you honestly believe I just go out and grab the first cute lady I see?" Vash stared back at Meryl with glowing green eyes, still pouting.

"Well, what else am I supposed to think? You do make your way from lady to lady quite often… One girl really doesn't have much shot of keeping you as her own, does she?" Meryl avoided looking at Vash, staring at the nearby ground.

Vash twisted his body around to get a better look at Meryl, tilting his head slightly in confusion. She seemed so… so sad. Was it because she honestly believed he ran around? But why did it bother her so much? "Ahh, I don't really do anything with 'em. They aren't special, I just like flirting… So perk up lil' missy! I can't have you playing doctor if you aren't paying attention to your hands." Vash smirked, closing his eyes as he teased her a little.

Meryl stared up at Vash. First, she looked happy, then a bit wary, then angry again. "Vash! Are you insinuating what I think you are! In your dreams, mister!"

She lifted her hand, ready to give him another firm slap. Vash backed off like a cowardly puppy, putting up a hand in mock defense. But he was surprised when she took down her hand and giggled a little. "You're so goofy, Vash. Now sit still, I'm not done patching you up yet."

"Yes Ma'am." Vash stayed stationary as Meryl continued to clean up the bullet hole on his shoulder. After he felt the soft rag leave his skin and her fingers gently touching his skin, he had meant to ask her something. But her fingers were soft, at least, softer than he expected for someone who worked as hard as she did. He wasn't sure why it shocked him, maybe it was just because it was pleasant. His skin tickled under her light touches, and he nearly forgot his question. But her soft touches ended, and Vash was jerked back to reality. "So… What's the verdict, Doc? Am I gonna need stitches?"

Meryl wiped her brow slightly, glancing down at the wound again. "Well, I don't think you'll need any on the back, but it's leaving a pretty bad scar. If you had patched it up when you first got shot, you might have been spared this one…" She reached out and touched the skin that had already begun healing, every so delicately. As she did, she sighed slightly and lowered her head so it was almost touching the top of Vash's head. "I just hope that this will be the last bad scar you ever receive… You don't deserve any more pain, Vash."

Vash held still, relishing in the feel of having her touching him. He could even feel her breath tickling his hair. "Oh Meryl…" Vash barely breathed out. He reached his uninjured arm up to touch her hand, placing his much larger hand atop her own.

Meryl tentatively lay her head to rest atop Vash's, feeling the tickle of his hair against her face. His hand was strong, but gentle… This was wonderful. "Yes, Vash?" Meryl mumbled over the words, her mind quickly growing tired, and Vash was so comfortable… She could fall asleep like this, even standing up.

Vash wasn't sure what he wanted to say. There were so many words that threatened to escape his lips, but very few of them made any sort of sense. He could tell her how nice he felt at that moment, how little he cared about such scars, so long as he wasn't alone, how glad he was that Meryl cared, that he was pretty sure this would be the last scar… But the words wouldn't come to describe it. He was resting in pure serenity at that moment, and he hoped it wouldn't end.

But a familiar voice called from the other end of the house, causing Meryl to jerk up suddenly.

"Meryl! Are you here? I heard that Mr. Vash was back in town, and I was wondering if you had heard from, oh! Who is this in Mr.Vash's bed!" cried out the taller of the insurance girls.

Meryl reluctantly had to pull away from Vash to explain what had happened that day. She began to leave the room before she turned back to Vash. "I'll be back in a moment to finish patching you up… I ahh.... I got distracted earlier, but I'll finish this time, alright?" Vash only nodded in response, making Meryl stared in concern for just a moment before turning back to leave the room. "Don't worry Milly, I'll explain everything…"

Vash stared ahead, the hand that had just been resting upon Meryl's was still hovering near his shoulder. Her finally dropped it with a deep sigh, closing his eyes as he tried to understand the feelings that were speeding though his body. This was an odd sensation… He had felt warm and comfortable, but something was also making him feel uneasy. His mind was racing to the point where he felt dizzy, his body satisfied to the point that his stomach churned. This was… wonderful, but almost unbearable. Ah, but he was losing grip of himself. Vash shook his head to try and clear it. This was ridiculous. `He probably just needed a good night's sleep.

He heard Meryl laughing with Milly down the hall and smiled. Her voice was nearly as beautiful as she was. He found his mind wandering over every curve in her body, tracing it with his mind's eye, wondering vaguely how her skin would feel beneath his hands. He felt a shiver run down his spine and realized that his body was being affected by his thoughts. He looked at the bucket of water Meryl had been using and splashed a good bit on his face, wishing it were just a tad bit colder. He ran wet fingers through his hair, rubbing the back of his head a bit when he heard footsteps behind him.

"Welcome back, lil' lady!" Vash didn't need to turn to know that it was her. He knew Meryl's presence like the back of his hand.

Meryl simply giggled, having regained her normal energy. She walked up behind Vash and poked both sides of his head at the same time. "Hey, not like I have anything better to do. Milly ran off to get dinner for us, so you'll be able to eat before you go to sleep." Meryl grabbed some bandages and began to gently wrap up his shoulder. Her hands gently touched his skin as she rolled the bundle around and around his arm.

Vash simply enjoyed the soft touches as she applied the bandages. That nice, firm rub she gave as she sealed off the end was nice too. "Uhhnnn… Your hands are soft, insurance girl… Do you think you could rub my back for a little?" Vash moaned out his request, trying to force back his ebbing desire to touch and be touched. His whole body seemed to ache in desire for more, and he wanted nothing more than to quench their thirst.

Meryl blushed slightly, withdrawing her hands a little further back from him in shock. "Oh, uhmm… I guess I could, but just for a little bit. Milly won't be gone long, and those donuts are still waiting for you." Meryl had been hoping that the mention of donuts would make Vash forget about the massage, but it hadn't seemed to stir him even a little. This was nerve-wracking. It wasn't that she didn't want to do this. She just wasn't sure what to do. She reached out a shaky hand and gingerly touched Vash's back. She raised her other hand and placed both hands entirely on his back. She began rubbing gently, her blush deepening as she murmured a question to Vash. "Is… this good?"

Vash had been reveling in her soft touch, forcing himself not to moan in pleasure. Her hands really were soft, and her massage was pulling his mind into oblivion. "Meryl, this is… this has got to be heaven…" He turned his head around to look into Meryl's bashful eyes, his own green orbs glittering in affection. This really was bliss… Everything about Meryl made him happy… Was this what love felt like? No other word was really strong enough to describe the presence he felt in his heart. Truly, this was what love was.

“You big tease.” Meryl gave a few shaky laughs, trying to stop herself from losing it. This was nothing… She was just rubbing his tired back, that was all… There was nothing to this… It was ridiculous to delve deeper into something that wasn't there! Meryl pulled her hands away, hardly noticing their quiver. “You… h… have donuts waiting for you. You should go get them.”

Meryl pulled away from Vash, grabbing the bucket, bandages, and rag as she did, and strode quickly out of the room. Her steps led her into the bedroom where Knives was sleeping, where she leaned against a wall and stared up at the ceiling. Her hands were still shaking, and she felt almost weak. Her knees failed to hold her weight, and she slumped against the wall. `Vash… Why do you continue to torture me like this?' She buried her head in her knees and hugged them close to herself, trying to regain control over her emotions.

Meanwhile, Vash had gotten up and moved to the kitchen. His mind was buzzing, but nothing really made sense. If this was love, it sure was confusing. Vash grabbed a donut and began to absentmindedly nibble on it as he continued to think of his short girl. She had seemed so nervous… Ahhh, he had obviously done something wrong. Meryl was most likely angry right now. He had totally blown it. Vash slumped into one of the chairs around the small table, munching more quickly on the donuts to try and get rid of his frustrations.

“I'm home! Oh, hello Mr. Vash! It's good to see that you're still alive.” Milly had just walked in with a grocery bag full of precooked food. She smiled at Vash before setting the bag down on the table. “Dinner will be ready as soon as I get these bags emptied. We have salmon sandwiches, tomato soup, and pudding for dessert!”

Vash smiled a little and chuckled. “Pudding? Now that sounds just like you, Milly.” He tried to sound casual, but his heart just wasn't in it. He had upset his short girl… And he didn't know what he could do about it. His mind seemed to be blank and busy at the same time, but he still couldn't find a solution.

Milly tilted her head at Vash, slightly curious. “Well of course it sounds like me, I am me. But Mr. Vash, you don't sound anything like you usually do. What's wrong?” Milly innocently asked the question as she pulled out a small bundle of sandwiches and a few containers of pudding.

Vash leaned his head back sharply and sighed. “Ahh, I'm just very confused right now… And I think I hurt her feelings… I'm an idiot…” Vash wasn't sure how much he should tell Milly, since it was bound to travel straight through to Meryl. He might have already said too much… Ah, darn it, he didn't want to scare his short girl more than he might have already. She was too good for fright… Too good for him.

Milly was smarter than Vash had guessed, though. She understood. “Don't worry, Mr. Vash. I'm sure Miss Meryl is confused right now, too. Where is she, anyways.” Milly looked around the house curiously, planning to go have a few words with her partner. This whole thing needed to be cleared up. It seemed as though both of them had something to get off their chests.

Vash closed his eyes to check the presences in the house. She was… with Knives. Kneeling over his bed, most likely cleaning his wounds. It was a good thing his brother was sleeping… He wasn`t quite ready to deal with people yet. “She's in that first room, the one I used to stay in. I think she's taking care of my brother…”

Milly looked to the room and smiled brighter than normal. “Could you finish setting up for dinner while I go have a few words with Miss Meryl? Hopefully, you'll both be less confused when I'm finished.”
