The Etch-a-Sketch End of the World

Part One: My Two Dads

Author's note: Hello all! Well, this is my first stab at a very shonen-ai, creamy yaoi-filled Trigun fic. The idea of this fic originated from Mimarin--HI!!!--who so graciously allowed me to expound upon it. It deviates from the original story, which was indeed within the bounds of the series, but there was far too much I wanted to do with this and so it could not, obviously, truly fit the actual storyline. There are indeed ***spoilers*** though--sorry, have to make sure people get that part, just in case they don't read this, I won't be responsible for them being spoiled unless they want it--just so you know. Also, just to touch bases, these are not my characters, they belong to the brilliant Yasuhiro Nightow, and this is not written for profit.

If you like this--especially you Mimarin!--let me know, I love to get positive feedback, I'm such a sucker. And now--onward to the fic!

Chapter 1

Nick was still trying to scrape his jaw off of the floor at the news when Vash started to babble.

"I'm just so worried that you'll reject me because of how strange and unexpected this is. But I'm hoping that I'm right about how much you love me and, and all that we've gone through certainly proves that we can handle anything... And I think this is a beautiful thing, despite the oddity of it, and, well, um, uh..."

Nick found his voice again after a few more moments, but before he spoke he grabbed the shoulders of his pacing lover and turned him so that they were face to face.

"I love you, even this couldn't scare me away after some of the stuff I've seen because of you. I just have one question..."

Vash's face instantly turned into a beaming smile. "Anything, Nick."

"HOW?!" Nick yelped, gripping Vash's shoulders crushingly.

Vash looked frightened for a fleeting moment, then embarrassed.

"Well, Nick, I'm sure you're familiar with the birds and the bees..."

"I know that sex makes babies, Vash, I want to know how you're having a baby!"

"Well, it's not like I'm human, Nick, we've gone over this..."

"But... But... I fuck you in the ass, Vash--how does that work?! Where in Hell is the baby going to come out?"

"I don't know!" The tears were falling down his cheeks now, the beauty mark hit by a teardrop every single time. "I've never been pregnant before!"

Nick softened when Vash began to cry and pulled the blonde into a gentle hug. He was always amazed by how perfectly Vash fit, tucked between Nick's arms and under his chin.

"I'm sorry... I just never thought I'd have a kid... Especially with you..." Nick took a deep breath to calm down. "How do you know?"

"Well, if you haven't noticed, I've been sick in the mornings lately, and I mentioned it to Milly and Meryl... Well, you know how Milly is sometimes so incredibly smart, but oblivious to it. She said something to the extent of 'Gee, Mr. Vash, if I didn't know any better I'd say you were gonna have a baby' then went on and on about how her big middle sister, or something like that, had a baby and--"

"Yeah, we know how she gets," Nick said airily, trying to speed the story along.

"Anyhow, it made me wonder, so I bought a pregnancy test from the corner store and it came out positive."

"But those things are so faulty!" Nick sputtered and pulled back from the embrace. "There's no way you can be sure."

"But I think--"

"We're going right back to that store and buying some more. And this time I'm watching them every minute along the way."

Nick let go of Vash and snatched his coat up off the bed, throwing it over his shoulder.

"You're going to watch my pee?" Vash squeaked, his turn now to stare in disbelief.

"Yes! We have to be sure. Thinking you're going to be a father is nothing to be trifled with--let's go."

He pulled Vash out of the room, passing the girls in the hall of their latest hotel stay.

"Meryl," Milly said, as she waved to the guys before they disappeared, "Where are Mr. Vash and Mr. Priest going?"

"Oh, who cares, Milly?"

***

Down at the corner store.

"Nick, we don't have to get every pregnancy test they sell..."

"Yes we do, we need to be completely sure, they could be faulty somehow."

Vash shook his head, he was beginning to think the priest had an obsession with the word 'faulty.'

"I sincerely doubt all of them are necessary."

"Yes, they are." Nick said and trekked to the counter.

He leaned over slightly and dumped the armful of tests onto the smooth surface to buy.

The man eyed Nick oddly, causing Nick to glance around the counter. To his relief he found a bowl full of lollipops, he quickly grabbed one and set it on top of the pile, as though it made a difference. The clerk just shook his head.

They were paid for within minutes and Nick rushed the bag of tests, Vash in tow, back to the hotel room as quickly as they had left it.

"All right," he dumped out the bag, sat down, and started pulling testers out of their boxes. "Um... how do these work?"

"Look at the instructions," Vash said cheerfully, skillfully licking away at the lollipop.

Nick stared down at the pile of papers, boxes, and testers, then briefly looked embarrassed. He knew he'd never be able to match all the instructions back up with the tests.

"Well, um, I guess you just pee away..."

Vash shrugged and kept his tongue working at the lollipop, which gave Nick erotic ideas, then he reminded himself that it had been exactly that which had brought him to where he was now.

He shoved the tests into Vash's hands and nudged him into the bathroom one step at a time.

"Nick... I don't think I can pee on command, especially with you over my shoulder."

"Do you need something to drink? Do you think that'll help?" he asked.

Vash considered it for a long moment, his eyes cutely looking up at the ceiling at an angle, and nodded with a smile.

Nick ravaged the hotel's kitchen trying to find cups and something Vash would like to drink.

"No, not alcohol, you madman, if he is pregnant then it's bad for the kid," he said, kicking himself.

He ended up pouring a glass of plain water, for all his troubles.

"Thanks, Nick," his lover replied happily and drank it down.

Nick noticed that a couple of the testers were already going and that Vash was starting on another.

But it was when Nick was sitting on the edge of the tub staring at about ten testers that were hard at working determining negative or positive, all done and peed on with nothing but time to tell, that Nick realized how much Vash was humoring him.

Nick was being nuts about this and any normal person would have screamed at him by now and left, but Vash just passively complied.

"Are they done yet?" Vash asked with a big smile, poking his head in the doorway.

Oh, right, Nick thought, I forgot... Not only did he comply passively, but with big smiles. God, I'm damn lucky... And is it just me, or is he glowing more than usual?

"I, uh, I don't know?"

"Well, I think they're done, it's been an hour."

"Oh..." Nick hadn't had any idea that so much time had passed, and now, he didn't know how to read the tests.

Luckily, Vash helped him, though unknowingly. He bounded into the small tiled room and looked through them all, all the while saying "Oh, look, this one's blue, it's positive. That one has two lines, it's positive. That one's got a circle, that's positive..." and so on.

Every one of them was positive, but still Nick didn't know whether or not to believe them. Guys did not get pregnant, and though Nick rationally knew Vash was different, it was hard to digest nonetheless.

It must have shown of his face too, because Vash pulled him out of the bathroom, around the couch, and toward the door.

"Don't worry about it, I know it's weird, but you'll get used to it. Are you hungry? I'm starving..."

Nick didn't say much after that. Meanwhile, Vash took him across the hall and invited the girls to have dinner with them. Milly was quick to accept and pulled Meryl after her without much protest.

It was in the middle of their dessert when Nick found his voice again.

"I've got it--we're going to take you to the doctor. They couldn't possibly be wrong."

"What's Mr. Priest talking about, Meryl? Is something wrong with Mr. Vash?"

Vash looked instantly embarrassed and tried to play it off.

"No, nothing's wrong! Nick, uh, just wants me to get a check-up, y'know, you can never be too careful with your health!"

Vash grabbed Nick's shoulders, pulled him out of the chair, and dragged him off into the corner away from the girls.

"What?" he asked, Vash simply couldn't understand the outburst.

"A doctor can check, they would be sure."

"Don't you think a doctor might think my being pregnant would be a little weird?"

"You think I don't think that?"

Vash sighed and looked down, one hand resting on the priest's shoulder, he thought for a few long moments, then looked up at Nick again.

"Will it make you feel better if I go?"

"Yes, yes it will," his lover conceded.

"All right, then we'll go... but can we please wait until tomorrow after we get some sleep?"

The pleading tone in the outlaw's voice was what made Nicholas D. Wolfwood finally give in and relax about it. That and those eyes of his.

***

"You would think after what it has possibly caused I'd learn a thing or two..." Nick was muttering to himself as he lit a crumpled cigarette, staring out over the town on their hotel balcony.

He was mostly dressed, his white shirt hung open and unbuttoned, his feet were bare, and his pants were zipped, but the closure parted, left undone.

Vash was beaming when he walked out onto the balcony. His red vinyl coat was all he wore, though no one but Nick knew that, but it was buttoned precariously only from the waist down leaving teases of skin for Nick's eyes to flit over.

Vash leaned in next to him and kissed the hollow behind Nick's right ear, satisfied at the sound of his erotic drawing-in of breath. Vash knew what it did to the priest and loved to take advantage of it, no matter how many times he called it 'unfair.'

"Can we do it again before we go?" Vash asked innocently.

Nick looked at him askance before taking another drag of his cigarette and answering.

"The doctor will find you curiously... loose if we do."

"Do you think I care?" he giggled. "I'm supposed to pee in a cup or let them draw my blood for testing and they'll let us know. Done."

Vash, despite the futile attempts by Nick to keep him away, kissed the hollow again and was instantly being carried back into the room as the smouldering cigarette took a high-dive over the balcony rail.

"Vile tempter..." Nick grumbled as though he hated it, then contradicted himself as he pinned the blonde outlaw to the bed.

"You wouldn't want me any other way," Vash countered, pushing the unbuttoned white shirt off of Nick's tan shoulders and let it whisper to the floor.

"Sure I would," Nick said in his defense, his fingers stroking down the skinny open space of his open red coat. "I just doubt you'd tempt me into sex as often if you weren't."

Vash laughed a little and was happily cut off by Nicholas' mouth claiming his as he crawled onto the bed and over the outlaw.

Nick straddled Vash's body stretched out on the bed, his tongue questing energetically for Vash's own. The blonde's hands lightly ran across the back of Nick's shoulders, then down his arms, before interlocking his finger's with the priest's and pulling them out to the sides, brining him down closer.

Vash's his hips moved of their own volition and rubbed up against his lover with a growing sexual need. Nick slowly broke the kiss and gazed down into Vash's aquamarine eyes.

"I hate your clothes..." he muttered. "Their a pain in the ass to get off--though you look damn good in them--and I like you better naked anyway."

Vash's heart tightened at the words and his breath caught in his throat. Could he really say that? That he loved his scarred and damaged body? But there he was, kissing down Vash's neck, his lips lingering on the skin of his chest through the small opening of his coat. Thought was starting to slow and narrow, and Vash's breath was getting ragged with want and need.

"Luckily," Nick continued and continued kissing down his chest and stomach as he spoke. "I don't have to remove much," he then unbuttoned the loosely done fastenings of the coat that covered what he wanted and pushed the red vinyl layers back like rose petals to expose what was important, "for this."

Nick's tongue flicked the tip of Vash's member, causing it to harden more than the anticipation had, then circled the crown's bottom edge with a few swirls of his tongue before it guided the head into his mouth.

Vash moaned mildly, knowing it would get worse, worse in the best of ways, and more intense. Nick's lips wrapped tightly around the head of his lover's member and rubbed his tongue against the underside while he gently began to suck.

Vash's moans deepened, though he knew it was only the smallest tip of the sexual iceberg--he had just made love to Nick fifteen minutes before, he knew this for sure--but it always felt good when Nick's mouth went to work.

Vash was about to grip his fingers into his lover's dark hair when a loud, insistent knock resounded against the door, not unlike the owner of the hand that did so.

"Vash! Wolfwood!" Meryl grated through the wood door. "For God's sake it's already noon, get your lazy asses up and do something!"

The mood broken, Nick pulled away and stood, shaking his head with a sigh before answering the wailing banshee.

"We'll be out in a few minutes, don't get your knickers in twist!" he called back.

Vash groaned unhappily and rolled over as Meryl grumbled and stomped back down the hallway.

"We were up and doing something..." he muttered to himself as he rolled off the bed and started dressing, causing Nick to laugh.

***

A half an hour later, after having eaten and thoroughly bitched at by the Queen Bitch herself, Nick and Vash walked to the local hospital.

Vash saw donuts as soon as they entered and left Nick behind in his dust. Nick shook his head and turned to speak with the medical clerk, who was typing, alone.

"What do you need?" said the woman behind the counter, her voice droning and nasal.

"A pregnancy test," he said before thinking about how odd it would be from a man.

The woman sighed dramatically and handed him a clipboard, turning away to type again as a way to completely ignore him. He lifted his eyebrows at her, but shrugged and turned away to sit down.

He set himself down into a seat and, since Vash was still trying to persuade the owner of the donuts--a little brown-haired girl--to let him have them, he looked at the form he was supposed to fill out, pen in hand, without a clue as to what to write.

"Name... Nicolas D. Wolfwood. Name of spouse... Um, Vash? Procedure... pregnancy test. Any allergies..? Can we legally put Meryl down?" he laughed to himself and filled out the rest of the form with a grin before taking it to the clerk.

"Please have a seat, the doctor will be right with you," she replied, not sincerely, but out of obvious habit.

Nick did as he was told, though, and was soon after joined by a Vash whose mouth was overly stuffed with donuts.

"Hhah..." Vash tried to speak in greeting and smiled as best he could with huge chipmunk cheeks.

"Hello," Nick replied, thinking it mildly amusing, and allowed Vash to twine their fingers together, though a few of the other clientele waiting seemed none too happy about it.

A mere few minutes later a young woman opened the door to the other half of the office and called:

"Vash Wolfwood... You're next."

Vash looked exceedingly puzzled, but Nick stood up with a smirk at his last name tagged onto Vash's name, and toted the confused outlaw through the doorway.

The girl was baffled at seeing the two men, but mentally decided the blond was too pretty to be male and left it at that as she brought them to one of the rooms.

The room was sterile, they noted, but had a slight home-y touch by the use of hand-made crafts that decorated here and there and the warm-toned walls.

She took Vash's temperature and heart rate, asked if he had any questions or if he was experiencing anything out of the ordinary. She wrote the notes in a file as she did these things and left with a promise that the doctor would be in to see them shortly.

"You all right?" Nick said, the room made his voice sound a bit hollow, but Vash smiled at him.

"Of course... I'm used to hospitals by now."

Just then, Doctor Vendelhoff, a short, balding German man, entered with the previous file in-hand. He muttered softly, reading it, and nodded.

"Good afternoon," he finally said with a thick germanic accent. "Miss Vash would like a pregnancy test, eh?"

"Yes," Nick answered for the outlaw, he didn't want to bring undue attention to him.

The doctor looked up and didn't even seem phased by the sight of the two. Little did they know, where he came from there were women who looked far more masculine than Vash ever would.

"What, eh," he struggled with the word. "indications, yes, do you have that Miss Vash is pregnant? It says here you have only a little sickness in the mornings."

"H--" he stopped himself and tried again. "She's taken ten--"

"Eleven," Vash corrected with a cute smile.

"Eleven pregnancy tests from the store," he finished.

"Eleven! Hoohoo!" the doctor chuckled. "And what did they say?"

"They were all positive."

"Well, I do wonder why you've bothered to come to me then, you have your answer."

"But... aren't those faulty?" Nick asked quickly, starting to panic that he'd gone through so much for nothing.

"Anything can be faulty, Mr. Wolfwood, but eleven of them is too many to ignore. If you really want me to, we can take a urine sample, but honestly, it would have the same result, in my opinion."

"So..." he mused, subdued.

"Oo, lollipops!" Vash squealed and grabbed one.

"What you're saying is that Vash is... pregnant," he finally got out.

"I would say so, yes... Is this not what you want, Mr. Wolfwood?" he asks curiously, eyeing the tall, lanky man before him.

"No, I just... wanted to be sure."

"We could take a blood test, but that would take a few days. Would you like that?"

"No, no... I believe it now... Um, well, I guess that's it... Uh, thanks, Doc."

The older man smiled and patted Nick's shoulder to reassurance, he figured that the man was just overwhelmed by the news he would be a father and understood that.

"Congratulation, Mr. Wolfwood. I'll have Anita give you some pamphlets and instructions to get the pregnancy off to a good start... And I'd like to schedule an appointment in a month or two to check on the progress."

Nick was in a daze after that, he wasn't really paying attention, everything was tuned out. He conversed well enough, but it was from habit rather than a conscious effort. His mind was occupied with trying to absorb the news, the confirmed fact.

The doctor, as it turned out, had been so kind as to make the visit free along with all the information and the scheduling of a visit six weeks from then. Vash made a comment about having to find a more permanent place to stay, he wasn't going to travel if it would hurt the baby.

It was only when they had gotten back to their room, out on the balcony with a crumpled cigarette, that he had fully assimilated it.

Vash lay curled up on the bed lightly sleeping while drag after drag Nick thought it over. His eyebrows were drawn together in what looked like a permanent wrinkle in his skin and he stared at the quickly darkening scene of the town, occasionally obscured by slightly bluish smoke which he exhaled.

This was the town he would be in awhile. Welcome home, old boy, he thought.

"You're going to be a dad..."
