Chapter 2: Shocking Revelation

"Umm…Milly? What do you mean you think you might be pregnant?"

"This could not possibly be happening," I thought frantically. Milly had never been in that type of relationship with a man in all the time we'd been working together. "Surely she and Mr. Wolfwood didn't…"

"I don't know what to do Meryl. You have to help me."

"Milly, are you sure that you didn't drink too much at the party last night? I mean, maybe you have a hangover?" I was frantic to find an answer to her illness that did not include pregnancy.

"Meryl, I didn't drink anything other than tea last night. What am I going to do? I can't have a child without a husband? What will my family think?"

"Milly, it is Mr. Wolfwood's child, right? What happened between you the night before he died?" "Just like an irresponsible man…" I thought rather viciously. "Get some poor girl pregnant and then get shot and killed the next morning."

"Oh Meryl," Milly began, throwing herself into my arms. "It was the most beautiful experience of my life. I was so shy and nervous, but Mr. Wolfwood made me feel like I was the most important person in the world to him. I felt beautiful and graceful not big and clumsy like I usually do." She sobbed for a few moments against my shoulder as we knelt there on the floor. I patted her shoulders softly and made soothing noises of comfort.

Milly raised sad eyes to meet mine. They were large and luminous and full of tears. "He's gone, Meryl… I never loved any man before, but I loved Nicholas so much. I can't bear the thought of having his child and him not being here."

I felt a momentary pang of regret for my harsh thoughts. Mr. Wolfwood had been a superb gunman. He didn't deliberately get killed and leave Milly. If he had lived, he'd have come back to her. I reached out softly to stroke her hair. "We'll get through this Milly I promise. I'm here and Vash is here too. We'll help you." I spoke confidently, but I really knew nothing about infants or being pregnant. "We should have you examined by the town doctor to make sure. I am sure that he'll have some instructions to give you if you are pregnant. You will love the baby, won't you? It will be a part of Mr. Wolfwood."

"How could I not love a part of my Nicholas?" Milly sniffed. "I'm scared, not heartless," she replied indignantly. "But, I'm glad you're here, Meryl and Mr. Vash too."

"Come on," I said gently. "Let's get you back to bed. It's been a short night so far and I don't think anyone will be getting out of bed very early today." I walked Milly back to her room and giving her a final hug and a promise to help her get through this, I turned and made my way back to the room I was sharing with Vash.

Easing back into bed, I smiled at his sleeping face. How innocent and child-like he seemed in the pre-dawn light. He was still lying on his side where I'd left him a few minutes ago. I kept his shirt on as I scooted back into him, trying to get close to his warmth without waking him up. I thought I had succeeded when I felt his warm breath on my neck and roving fingers that made me realize he was at least partially awake. How did I spring this on him especially when we had just found our way to each other?

I warmed quickly as he breathed soft kisses down the side of my throat. "Morning," he mumbled sleepily. I felt his hands trace the outline of my breasts through the material of his shirt. Deftly, he managed to undo the top two buttons and began to stroke my nipples into stiff peaks. I was amazed at how quickly I was responding to this man in bed with me. "Will I ever get tired of him?"

Milly was forgotten as I gave myself up to the pleasure Vash was giving me. I moaned softly as he continued to trail kisses down the side of my throat while he caressed my breasts. I could feel his erection against my ass as he pulled me closer to him. He trailed one hand down my body and pulled my leg over the top of his. Moments later, familiar callused fingers were teasing a response from my body. I shifted against Vash in an attempt to get closer. He slid one finger into my wetness, causing heat to well up in my lower body. He raised his hand to his mouth and licked my moisture from his fingers. It was an incredibly erotic site.

Vash lowered his lips to mine. "I love the taste of you," he breathed softly. I could taste myself on his lips. "Vash, make love to me," I whispered against his mouth. He shifted slightly and his hard member found its way into my passage. I gasped against his mouth as I felt the now familiar size of him stretch my inner walls to their limits. He moved slowly, setting a leisurely pace.

My desire increased with each of his slow thrusts into my body. "Mmm… I think I could start every day like this," he whispered against my ear. I shivered as his words reached me. I responded by thrusting my hips against him. I wanted Vash to know I felt the same; that I could wake up every morning and have him make love to me before breakfast.

Vash increased his pace, driving into me harder and faster. "Vash… I whispered softly. He pinched my nipples lightly and reached one hand to stroke my clit until slow waves of pleasure washed over me. My inner muscles contracted tightly around him as I felt his cock spasm and a warm wetness pour into me.

Vash held me to him as our racing hearts slowed and our breathing returned to normal. He withdrew from me and turned to his back, pulling me to his chest. I lay there quietly, my eyes taking in the brutal scars on his body and loving him more for surviving all that he'd been through.

Reality intruded as I thought about Milly again and sighed, wondering if I'd ever find myself in a similar predicament. Vash's words interrupted my thoughts. "Meryl…Meryl? What are you thinking about so seriously?"

I was in a quandary as to how to answer. It became clear to me though that I couldn't keep this news from him. Pulling myself upright in bed, I smoothed a few stray hairs from his forehead and gazed down into his aqua eyes. They were full of questions and a hint of that impishness that I loved about him. "Milly thinks she's pregnant," I blurted out in a rush.

"Milly is… pregnant? " I could hear the shock in his voice and see it in his eyes. I nodded slowly. "I'm not sure if she's right though, She will need to see the town doctor to be certain," I added hastily. I was uncertain of his reaction to the news.

"Wolfwood's?"

I nodded again.

"A new life… that is a good thing. She will need help. It's a good thing we are here for her."

"Vash, it's not that simple. She's scared and she's horrified at the mere thought of this whole mess and of what her family will think. Yes, we're here for her, but Mr. Wolfwood isn't. How can she raise their child alone?"

"Alone…" his voice trailed off in silence. His eyes clouded with guilt.

"What's wrong, Vash." I didn't like the look his aqua eyes held. I could see that something was troubling him.

His voice held a hard, cold edge. "It's my fault Wolfwood is dead. My fault that Milly is alone. I should have stopped Knives sooner. I shouldn't have left Wolfwood to face that guy alone. If only I had…"

"Stop it, Vash." I snapped quickly at him while placing my fingers over his lips. "Don't start playing that 'If only' game. Don't think it will change the past, all it will do is cause sleepless nights and mountains of regret. It's not your fault Mr. Wolfwood is dead. If anyone is to blame, it's that creature lying silent in the room down the hall."

Rising swiftly from the bed, Vash looked down at me coldly for a moment. "In case you've forgotten, I'm the same kind of creature." Snatching his jeans off the floor, Vash disappeared out of the room, leaving me alone in the bed, wondering how I had managed to handle this situation so badly.
