Cain touched down just outside of the coven's residence. He put the other two men on the ground and looked them both over for a moment before turning to walk toward the entrance to the underground tunnels.
Dietrich followed closely on Cain's heels but Isaak hung back. Cain turned to look at him curiously.
“Isaak, what is it?”
“I can't go with you.”
Cain's brows drew down into a frown, marring the beautiful lines of his face. “Why not?”
“I'm . . . tainted somehow. I can feel it moving just underneath my skin but I can't get a solid lock on it to attempt a removal.”
“He's right,” Dietrich said. “I can feel it in me as well. When I try to pin it down it moves.”
“Isaak, show me your neck,” Cain said.
Isaak lifted his midnight hair and tilted his head to the side, exposing his neck for Cain's inspection. Cain's fingers traced the skin of Isaak's neck and he found what he had been looking for hiding behind one perfectly shaped ear. A dark blot no bigger than the tip of his finger marring the alabaster skin.
“Oh, she's good. Of course, I expected nothing less considering her parentage. I'm afraid you'll just have to deal with it because it will be there until she chooses to remove it.”
“Mein Herr, I swear to you, I did not allow her to mark me so,” Isaak said, sounding mildly indignant.
“I know you didn't, Isaak. But there are darker angels in the world than even you or I.”
“What is it?” Dietrich asked, for the first time since meeting him Cain thought he sounded afraid.
Cain was silent for a moment before turning to examine Dietrich for a similar marking. He found it at the base of his neck.
“Come along. I'll shield you the best I can but I doubt it will hold her off for very long.”
“Who and what is she, Mein Herr? She isn't a Methuselah and she obviously isn't a Terran either,” Isaak said.
Cain sighed and raked his hands through his hair. “I'll tell you what I know concerning her once I'm out of the cold,” Cain said, turning and entering the catacombs.
Isaak and Dietrich followed, each lost in their own thoughts wondering what could be in store for them. Trying to ignore the fear suddenly seeping through their minds.
They entered Cain's private library, a massive circular room lined with bookcases and shelves containing various odd things connected to Cain's life. Cain sat in the massive leather armchair and waved them into the seats on the other side of his desk. He regarded his subordinates thoughtfully, pondering how to play such an interesting turn of events to his advantage.
“I don't know much concerning the one who actually marked you as I've never seen or dealt with her before tonight,” Cain, said lacing his fingers together and settling his chin on them. “But I have heard several rumors concerning her and considering her parentage, what I've seen and felt in that short contact with her, I'm inclined to believe them to be more fact than fiction.”
The other two men looked at their leader curiously, waiting for a fuller explanation.
Cain smiled a little before continuing. “I'm sure you've heard the legends and stories concerning the Kings and Queens of Earth. That they are the guardians of this realm as much as the Kings and Queens of Heaven and Hell are guardians of their respective places.”
Both men nodded, trying to ignore the first inclinations to real fear suddenly coursing through them.
“Which one is she?” Isaak asked solemnly.
“She isn't one but her mother is. Her mother is the one who made off with my brother.”
Dietrich felt his heart start beating so hard he thought it would burst from his chest. “She's the fire sovereign, isn't she?” All the stories he had been told in childhood concerning the queen of flame had come rushing back to him. He had thought in his older years that the stories had been just that, stories to frighten children on cold nights. But then again, he had also thought the same of vampires until a few years ago.
Cain nodded. “That she is. Do you know the rest of her story?”
Dietrich nodded jerkily, ignoring Isaak's curious stare. “It's said that she's the daughter of the Norse trickster god. That she was claimed as an avatar to the war goddess Morrigan early in her life. After her death she became one of the death gods, I think they're also called shinigami, then became the Earth's fire queen. All other information is vague and attributed to hearsay and legend.”
Cain's lips twitched. “Most of the information regarding her is hearsay and legend. Though the vast majority of it concerning her happens to be true. She was a friend of Lilith's not so long ago. You can imagine how little affection she holds for me just now.”
“You'll forgive me, Mein Herr, but why are you telling us about her mother if she isn't the one who did this,” Isaak said.
“Patience, Isaak, I'm coming to that. What I know of her mother plays into what I know of her. The one who marked you was not “born” in any traditional sense.”
“What do you mean?” Dietrich asked.
“One of her fathers, yes I said one of, I'll explain that later. He willed her into being with all the powers that he, her other father and her mother possess combined.”
“So, one of her parents is a shadow master,” Isaak said.
“Yes. And as you are well aware, there are only a maximum of two true shadow masters born per century, those are usually in the same bloodline.”
“That would explain much,” Isaak said thoughtfully. He had been taught how to manipulate the shadows and therin lay the flaw. He had been instructed in the use of shadows. To have that inherit ability was something very different and vastly more dangerous than even he was. “Then this is a tracking device made of shadows,” he said, his hand going nervously to the mark behind his ear.
“Of a sort, yes,” Cain said, carefully watching their reactions.
“Are you sending us away from the coven?” Dietrich asked, his eyes flicking briefly to Isaak.
“I don't believe that's necessary at the moment. I can mute the reception signals while the two of you are here to the point she will only be able to get the general area you're in but not the exact location. You will have to be very careful when you leave here, she'll be able to pinpoint where you are then.”
“Then we're to be prisoners in our own home,” Dietrich said.
Cain nodded solemnly. “I daresay it will probably be a far more pleasant experience than being her prisoner. Especially if she takes after her mother.”
Dietrich woke in the small hours of the morning to his own strangled scream. He sat for a few minutes trying to control his shaking, telling himself over and over that it had only been a dream. He was safe in his own room, the rest of the coven was within shouting distance, there was nothing to harm him. As though in answer to his thoughts a bolt of searing pain shot from the back of his neck and down his spine, leaving him breathless.
Only a matter of time, bairn. The words echoed through his mind with frightening clarity. You and your pretty little friend will belong to me soon enough.
