“BIIIIITCH!” was the only thing Takara heard before finding herself flat on her back in the middle of one of the Vatican corridors. “Been looking all over for you, kid.”

“Star! Get off of me you crazy shinigami,” she said, shoving the hyperactive redhead off of her.

The other woman rolled to her feet as though never off balance. She brushed herself off and looked around at the people she didn't know staring at her as though she had dropped out of the sky. Of course, she had but that was irrelevant just then. One of the first things she noticed was the fact she had two guns aimed at her, one sword and an interesting silver disc.

“Aww, aren't they cute!” she said, two weapons immediately dropped while the guns remained trained on her. “Hmm. Either that one had insanely strong shields or . . .” she looked at Takara curiously.

“Android,” Takara supplied. “Your suggestions won't have any effect on him. Tres, please put the guns down.”

“Status report, Princess Takara.”

Takara groaned at the use of her title. She thought she somehow should have known that Tres would dig that particular bit of information up at an annoying moment.

Star laughed. “Well, you are a queen's daughter, so that makes you a princess.”

“I have never been a *princess*,” Takara said, glowering at the other woman. “It's fine, Tres. She's a teammate.”

The weapons lowered fractionally as he scanned and processed the information available on the person standing next to Takara.

Tres finished processing the file and holstered the guns.

“Well, I guess I'm harmless then,” Star said grinning.

“You are FAR from harmless, wife,” Jeirn said from behind her. “Exactly what are you doing here? I thought you were working on another project.”

“I am. But Goddess wanted you back at the house A.S.A.P. She and Boom have some kind of problem with the biting boy's machines going haywire.”

“Damn!” he said, leaning and giving Star a fast kiss. “I'll be home later.”

“You'd better be. With all the pretties around here I could forget I have a husband,” she said.

“You have an insanely jealous and murderous husband,” he said before disappearing. “Remember that if you start thinking about forfeiting one of those boys' lives.”

“Yeah. That's what I love about him too.”

Takara shook her head. “Why do you insist on calling Daddy by the name Boom?”

“Remind me to tell you about the time he blew up half of the Justice Department if you want a reason,” Star said. She turned to look over the members of the AX, who were still standing wide eyed around them. “We need to go somewhere and talk about that other little project you had me working on.”

“Probably.”

Star grasped the other woman by the arm before waving to the men. “Bye bye boys, have fun stormin' the castle,” she said before disappearing.

Hugue and Leon suddenly seemed to come to their senses, shaking off any residual hold over them.

“What was that all about?” Leon wondered aloud.

“Parting words in reference to a film from the twentieth century . . .” Tres began.

“That isn't what I meant, Tres.”

“Okay, kid, spill it,” Star said, walking arm in arm with Takara down a sunlit corridor of the family home in Florence.

“What?”

“What's going on with you and the adorable android?”

“Nothing.”

“Uh-huh. Why am I not believing that for a second.”

“Star!”

“You're attracted to him though.”

“I suppose so. But it isn't as if it's mutual.”

“I don't know about that. He IS self aware. Which is more than I can say for most organic males. And he didn't pull the guns on me thinking I was a threat to the other AX members or the Vatican. He pulled them thinking I might be a threat to YOU.”

“Aren't we here because you had something to tell me about our little project?”

“Yes, yes. I'll let you change the subject. For now.”

She paused and pushed open a heavy wooden door. The room inside was dimly lit and had sparse bedroom furnishings in it. A young man was seated in the middle of the bed with his arms wrapped around his knees. He didn't look up when they entered the room, just kept staring at nothing.

“What did you do to him?” Takara asked curiously.

“Rolled through his head, modified a thought or dozen and locked him inside his own fears. He should tell you anything you want to know in a day or so.”

“You are remarkable. Really fucking scary but remarkable.”

“Thanks. But this one was easy. No one really teaches proper shielding anymore so it didn't take that much. He's inner circle but not really close to their leader. The one with the pretty hair that you marked has much more information than this one but he's harder to get to. You'll probably have to hurt him. Badly.”

“I almost feel sorry for them.”

“Don't. You really wouldn't believe the lives the two of them have managed to tear apart with no remorse.”
