*Mother, tell your children not to walk my way
Tell your children not to hear my words, what they mean
What they say.
Mother, can you keep them in the dark for life?
Can you hide them from the waiting world?*

“Honestly, Mother, just return them to me and I'll stop harassing you,” Cain said. He was once again standing outside of the gates to her home.

Blaze stood with her hands on her hips shaking her head. “If I had them, Cain, they would have been returned to you by now,” she said. “More than a little broken but they would have been returned to you.”

“And they would have been made all the more dangerous due to the breaking.”

“Probably.”

“Damn it, I know you have them. So, let's stop playing around, shall we.”

Blaze sighed and rolled her eyes and Cain found himself face down on the ground with her heel digging into the back of his neck.

“THIS is me playing around. Are you absolutely *certain* you want to push me into being serious?”

“All I want is for my children to be returned to me.”

“Cain, you do not have children. You have minions. You have no concept as to what it is to be a parent,” she said, removing her heel from his neck and starting to walk away.

“Why? Why would you see fit to assist those who are so far beneath you? Who would kill you in a heartbeat if they could as that institution has killed so many of your people in the past.”

“That was ages ago and this has nothing to do with religion.”

“Not at the moment it doesn't,” Cain said, getting to his feet slowly. “But how long do you think it will take for them to turn against you and your children once they've finished using the lot of you?”

“Oh, I don't know. Approximately as long as it took for you to turn against Lilith,” she said, then vanished.

Cain shook his head as he stared at the spot where she had been. “You are entirely too naive for your years, Mother. You falsely believe that the Terrans have made strides in their mentality. They are the same frightened sheep they have always been. And sheep are best when slaughtered.”

Blaze took several deep breaths upon gaining the safety of the house. This was rapidly growing into a nightmare she didn't think she could get out of quickly.

//Love, do you need us?// came a quiet voice into her head.

//We can be there in an instant if you do.//

Her husbands. Her personal sunlight and shadow. Takara's fathers, the one who had willed her into being and the one who had gifted her with her ability to control the shadows. She should have known that they would pick up on her concerned state of mind.

//Do I feel that worried?//

//Yes.// came the firm and self assured voice of the shadow master. //Don't hedge, just answer the question.//

//Seiichiro Tatsumi, you do remember that I'm not afraid of you like everyone else is, right?// Blaze thought, smiling to herself and missing them terribly.

//As though you'd let me forget. If you won't tell us what's upsetting you, just tell us when you'll be home so Yutaka will stop worrying.//

//I do not worry.//

//And I'm a lemming.//

//I'll be home at least for a visit in the next couple of days.//

//Make it sooner.//

//Believe me, I'll try. Gods, I miss you two so much.//

//We miss you. Please make sure you're home soon. We love you.//

//I love both of you. With everything in me.//

She let the mental connection drop and sighed heavily, wishing that she were home instead of half a world away.

“Mom? Who were you talking to? As though I couldn't guess,” Takara said from behind her.

“Your fathers. They want me home. Big surprise there. And apparently Honey is worried because I'm worried about all of this,” she said, waving a hand to indicate the world at large. “Which naturally makes Seiichiro worry.”

Takara laughed. “Daddy always worries about everything. I love that you still call him Honey as a nickname,” she said, putting an arm around her mother as they walked along the hallway. “I just hope I'm as happy as the three of you are someday.”

Blaze looked at her curiously. “Something you want to tell me about?”

“Not really. Though I am rather fond of one of the AX members,” Takara said. “Speaking of AX members, how's Abel?”

“Not great. He isn't healing properly and it makes me nervous.”

Takara frowned. “You've given him a good supply of blood?”

“Yes. Seth sent that along after I spoke to her about him being injured and the nano machines being damaged. She said if he wasn't better in a few days that she'll arrange to be here herself.”

“That might not be a bad idea anyway. Most people tend to do better with friends and family around them. It has to be strange being here and away from every thing familiar to him even though you're a friend.”

“That's true.”

As they rounded the corner they met Gunther striding in their direction. The look on his face was grim.

“What is it?”

“Something is *really* wrong with him.”

“What makes you say that, Gun,” Takara asked.

“He isn't waking up.”

“Oh, shit,” Blaze said.

They entered Abel's room to find him lying very still. He was paler than usual and his skin was clammy to the touch. Blaze almost wanted to put her head to his chest to make sure he still had a heartbeat.

“Gun, go find your aunt. Bring any of the AX members who happen to be around her and Jeirn at the time.”

“On it. What about . . .”

“No. I'm not sending for your mother unless I *have* to. She should at least enjoy some of her honeymoon,” Blaze said. Gunther left and she turned to her daughter. “Taka, go get some more quilts. This looks like it's going to be a long night.”

The song used in this chapter is Mother by Danzig.
