After everyone but the members of Red Shaman and Tres had filed out of the library to find their respective rooms Blaze pulled what looked like several sheets of paper from the desk drawer.
“Taka, Seth sent these over this morning. It's what we were wondering about concerning Abel's nano machines. She said she's coming as a member of the negotiating party so that adds another layer of worry.”
“I really wouldn't worry about Seth if I were you, Mom. She is one dangerous little Methuselah. Remember last time she and Skye were play fighting and they nearly destroyed half the city?”
Takara took the papers from her mother and read quickly through all the stats on the machines that repaired what was damaged.
“Star,” Takara said, turning to the other woman. “Can you do a scan of Abel and see how many of these were damaged and in turn how many I need to have?”
“On it,” Star said, walking out of the room.
“Now, concerning going to Black and Blue tonight. I want no more than four operatives in the club. Any more new faces than that would be suspicious,” Blaze said. “Hunter can get anyone in through his telepathic abilities. But I want at least two AX members and one other Red Shaman.”
“I'll go, Mom,” Takara said absently, still studying the papers and the pictures of the nano machines that had been enlarged in order to see the details of them. “I'll take Tres and Leon can come along too since he's probably the best suited to move in a club.”
“Um, don't know if you've noticed this or not, Taka,” Hunter said. “But Tres will set off every metal detector in a thirty mile radius.”
“So, we'll say he's a companion bot or something,” Takara said.
“He doesn't act like one though, Taka,” Gun pointed out. “Companion bots are programmed to be social. He'd be made in a minute. Unless . . .”
“Unless what?” Blaze said.
“I do have some of the social interaction chips for a companion bot. It would make his conversations less stilted and he could pass for one then. Plus it wouldn't radically alter his programming.”
“I think that's entirely up to Tres,” Blaze said, turning to him. “What do you think, Tres? Is that okay with you?”
“It is acceptable as a temporary alteration,” Tres said. “It will be Cardinal Sforza's decision as to whether it will remain as part of my programming.”
“Perfectly understandable, Tres,” Gun said. “I'll go find them then we can do the initial install so you can get used to it a little better before tonight.”
“Acknowledged.”
“Gun, much as I love you, if you break him, I'll break you. Capice?” Takara said.
“Ja.”
Gun was headed out the door just as Star was coming back in. The look on her face said she was not pleased at all with Abel's state.
“Blaze, I respect the hell out of you as a leader and all that but if he isn't better damn near immediately after this, I'm calling Skye.”
“If this doesn't work, I'm calling her myself,” Blaze said grimly.
“Good. Bitch, we probably need close to a thousand of the friggin' little buggers. There's a LOT of damage to that boy.”
“Good thing at their normal size about that many will fit on one page,” she said, looking at the paper she was holding that seemed to be filled with dots not much bigger than a period. “Damn, wish Daddy was here. He's better at this than I am.”
She put the paper on the desk and smoothed it flat then held her right hand over it. The page seemed to ripple and the small dots on it popped up from it. Moving her hand in a swirling motion, she started to gather the dots from the page and put them carefully into a small container. When she had all of them she handed the small box to Star.
“Okay, those should be enough. Gods, I hope so at any rate,” she said, swaying dangerously and grasping the edge of the desk. “Mom, I think I remember why I don't really use that ability much.”
“I think I remember why you don't as well,” Blaze said, putting out a hand to steady her daughter.
“Damn, why doesn't this effect Daddy as bad?” she said, quickly sitting down before falling down.
“He's used to it. As I understand it, the more it's used the easier it gets, like the shadows.”
“Do you need help, Taka?” Star asked.
“No. Get those into Abel first. I just need to sleep for a couple of hours and I'm good. It just completely wipes me out when I do that. Somebody want to take me to my room so I can crash?”
She wasn't surprised to find herself immediately lifted from the chair by Tres.
“Go to your right as you walk out the door and it's four doors down on the left hand side, Tres,” Blaze said, noticing that Takara was already half asleep on Tres' shoulder.
Tres nodded and left.
Star grinned a little before saying, “Well, guess I'd better get these into the biting boy. Any ideas as to how and where to put them in?”
“Seth said put them directly onto the most serious wound site and they'll burrow in on their own.”
“Freaksome,” Star said, turning and walking out, snagging her husband by the edge of his shirt as she went and dragging him along.
“Guess I'll go see if I have something that will fit the bot boy,” Hunter said. “I don't think Leon has anything that would work considering he's a lot broader than Tres is.”
“Probably not,” Blaze said thoughtfully. “I'm still trying to figure out how to tell her fathers about this little number.”
“That should be entertaining to watch. They'll live, or continue to exist as the case is. I honestly don't think that *anyone* would ever be good enough for her as far as those two are concerned.”
“Truer words were never spoken.”
Star and Jeirn watched in fascination as the nano machines did indeed seem to burrow into Abel's skin. He groaned and shifted a little in his sleep but otherwise didn't move. Star's usually happy expression was gone and she leaned into her husband a bit for support.
“You okay?” he asked, kissing the top of her head.
“Yeah, I guess so. I've done all I can but I'm still really worried about him. Wish Skye were here. She'd have him right in a heartbeat.”
“Probably. I wonder why she didn't call Skye sooner,” Jeirn said thoughtfully.
“No telling.”
“Are you staying with him?”
“For the moment. I want to see if and how these things work. What are you going to do?”
“Go fight with the boss probably,” he said with a smile. “Or pick on Hugue. Which ever one I happen to come across first. For a mortal, he's one hell of a swordsman.”
“I don't know if he'd take that as a compliment or not, dear,” Star said.
