Chapter One: Case Study

Rain.

Its funny how that is one of the only few things unaffected by time. All the buildings had changed, all the people had changed, and even the landscaping had changed. It seemed as if the rain was one of the only few things truly unaffected. I sighed deeply, regardless of the fact that my dead lungs didn't need it. These days it seemed like much was unneeded. My thoughts were interrupted by someone else's\a much more happy someone else. A bubbly sister--Alice in fact.

'It's raining again.' I heard her think, knowing that she was trying to strike conversation with my quiet self.

“That it is.” I murmured softly, knowing that she would have no problem hearing me with her equally advanced hearing. The door creaked as she slowly opened it, poking her pixie head in to peak on me before fully letting herself in. Her footsteps barely made any noise as she bounced quietly to where I was sitting.

She said nothing as she placed herself besides me, her eyes gluing to the small rivulets of rain running in teams down the glass pane.

“It seems much colder somehow.” She said softly, though her voice still managed to hold the soft happiness I've only heard her loose once.

I nodded my head, deeding to say or do nothing more.

“It seems like the war even destroyed part of this natural life.”

The war.

World War Three some called it. A bloody massacre was all it was. A pointless bloody massacre. It was worse though, so much worse. The enemies had changed their conventional strategies used for centuries. It was an unexpected attack. Even those of us alive for centuries were surprised and stunned to disbelief.

It was the small cities that were bombed first. The carnage was unbelievable, and the strategy the other forces had was faultless. All the small cities bombed bordered the larger metropolitan areas. The radiation from the bombs spread impossibly fast, and quickly many in larger counties were dieing slowly and painfully, Brutality was all it was. The innocents were regarded as enemy's as well as the solders, and the United States providence was changed for ever.

Things, already impeccably bad for the Cullen family, grew worse. Jasper was itching to go and aid in the war\his body pulsing at the excitement of a war fought on home territory again, while I overcame my blood lust and aided Carlisle in the hospitals and Red Cross camps.

What I saw in those years will never leave me. The tears, sweat, and blood were all innocent and all worse than the last.

It was in one of the last bombings though, that my life took a bitter turn for the worse.

Alice had seen it mere moments before the bomb landed, and it had been too late.

Always too late.

We never talked about it.

The only thing that kept me going at that point was the millions of others who were less fortunate than myself, and aiding them in their recovery.

After the war had settled I took place beside Carlisle. I stood tall beside him, shadowing him in the hospitals for quite a while until I was able to stand alone.

It was the only thing that kept me going.

“I miss her.” I heard Alice say, bringing me instantly out of my musings.

I didn't have to ask who 'her' was. I already knew. I turned my head away, not knowing why Alice was suddenly talking to me about this.

“Yeah.” I said simply, the pain in my voice apparent.

“It's getting harder and harder to remember her sent.” She commented innocently, knowing that even a hundred years earlier I wouldn't have been able to talk about the woman of subject.

“I don't think I'll ever forget her sent.” I said lightly, the pang in my un-beating heart still as real and still as painful. “I don't think that I'll ever work hard enough for the proper amends.”

'Oh, Edward.' Alice thought, looking at me with sad doe eyes. I let a half ass smirk take the corner of my mouth. “It's alright Alice.” I told her, my eyes trained outside, though they saw nothing past the window.

Alice sighed while standing fluidly, all in one motion. I listened as her feet padded equally as quiet out my door, and into the hall way.

“It's alight.” I whispered to myself, hoping that maybe one day that self fulfilled prophesy would come true.

“Dr. Cullen” A voice said to my back. I turned quickly, my eyes training onto one of the head nurses of the hospital. I put on one of my charming smiles, hearing her heart beat pick up by just a fraction of a second.

“Yes Mrs. Mortensen?” I asked her\again equally as charming. If there was one thing I'd learned in the past two hundred and fifty years it was that charm would get you as far as the eye could see.

“Your father asked me to fetch you. He said that he had something important to talk to you about. I just told him to wait one second and I would go get you.” The middle aged lady rambled on, her cheeks turning a rosy red color.

I smiled with my pearly whites, “Thank you Mrs. Mortensen, if you will excuse me then.”

She quickly nodded her head, “You get going deary, don't let your father wait one second longer. It looked urgent!” She said quickly, moving her body to the side of the hallway to let me through.

I nodded in thanks as I walked past her, giving her one last 'heart stopping' smile for all her 'troubles'. As I walked down the long hallway I passed the nurses station, peeking my head in the room as I saw all of them huddled around the small eighteen inch television.

'oh my god! Is that even possible?!'

'I wonder what this will mean now?'

'Jesus Christ, what will they think of next?!'

'That shit should be illegal...'

My brow furrowed as I heard the many different thoughts filter through my head. What in the world was going on now?

I just shook my head and continued on my way to Carlisle's office. I turned the corner slowly, not bothering to knock as I swung the heavy–to normal humans–door open, letting it close behind me as I took a seat in front of my father.

“}Edward,” he started, and I could instantly tell that something was going on. All pleasantry fell from my face and I focused solely on my father, “there's been an...occurrence...that the Volterra sees as a threat, and we are to go, asses the situation, and...terminate”

My brows furrowed in anger. The Volterra and I were most certainly not on the same page.

“}And what exactly has happened.”

Carlisle stared me dead in the eye, his gold matching my own.

“}The humans have managed to create an immortal.”
