The Immortals

Chapter Two: Theories

EPOV

“The humans have managed to create an immortal.”

The words that Carlisle had uttered to me had rung loudly in my ears for the past three hours. It was impossible. It had to be some sort of publicity stunt to gain research money for more stem cell research or something of that nature. There was no way in hell that humans had managed to create an immortal! It was absurd! The human race was such a narrow minded species anyways, how could they have even gathered a test subject for that?!

Almost as soon as my father had told me of the recent developments happening he was called to the ER for an emergency surgery so I had, therefore, no time to dig information from him. The rest of my day continued in a haze as I festered over what was happening. The more I thought of it the more I noticed it. Nurses, patients and even fellow doctors had the hot subject on their minds. It was an inescapable subject that was quickly grating on my last nerve.

Even if there was a human immortal it would probably die within the next few years. Humans always tended to get their medications wrong and some unforeseen consequence would come from their recent research.

After what seemed like forever my shift was finally over and I was making my way to the house, undoubtedly to deal with the latest news from the family as well. I took a long way home, though my lack of speed was unchanged over the years.

As expected Alice, Rosalie, Emmett, Jasper and Esme were all gathered in the living room, waiting to hear what was going on.

I walked at a human pace to the door--my mood was in no rush to deal with further confusion. One of the single most things I hated was the unknown factor to science sometimes. Atoms didn't think after all, and that put a significant damper in my mood.

“Edward!” Alice called, her patients wearing thin.

“I'm coming dammit.” I huffed under my breath, knowing that she would have no problem hearing me.

'Pick your feet up' I heard her voice peak in my head.

“Cool your jets short shit.” I said as I pushed the door open, making my way leisurely towards the living room.

"What do you want?" I demanded as soon as the door was opened, already knowing the questions were about to be whizzing by my head.
"Uh, first things first, details! I had a vision of it then poof! Nothing! What is going on?!" Alice demanded her speech almost impossible to keep up with.
"Apparently the humans have created an immortal." I replied dully, moving past my brothers and sisters to the living room, throwing myself into the couch as gently as possible--not wanting to break another one in my thoughtlessness. Esme had an impeccable way of making me feel like a horses rear when I broke her furniture.
"Yes, thank you captain obvious for that tid bit!" Alice shouted dramatically, throwing her hands in the air to further emphasize her exasperation. "Now could you please give us the details!"
"Alice, I really don’t know too much about it right now." I said honestly, I knew what everyone was thinking, but no one knew how the scientist came to create an immortal. "In all honesty this shouldn't even be possible. With the war it destroyed so much and set science back so far. Honestly I'm surprised, if not a bit doubtful about the whole situation." I continued, my eyes straying to the baby grand sitting in a corner of our billiard room. It had been so long since my fingers had graced that ivory.
"So you think this is pretty much a crock of shit?" Emmet said, throwing his arm around Rosalie and pulling her closer to him.
"Well from my stand point it’s a pretty far stretch to be real." I murmured, now it was time for the bomb to be dropped, "but when we Carlisle and I go to the conference we'll be able to determine for ourselves."
"What!" Ah, my ever loving sister is always the first to voice her oh so loud opinions about what I do.
"The Volterra informed Carlisle just recently of their...demands." I said bitterly. The Volterra. I really don’t think that anything I ever say with their title in it will not be bitter. The Volterra had successfully ruined any respect I might have had for them when they went into a frenzied blood bath as the war ruined Italy. Luckily the media cover it as cannibalism.
Don’t always believe the things you read in the papers.
Which was also why I was having such a hard time believing this new little piece of information.
"Really Alice, your antics aren't needed. Yes, the Volterra wants Carlisle and I to check it out, however, we both would have gone with or without their permission. I’m not some cults dog." I said, spitting the last sentence out with venom. Aro to me was like herpes, just when I think I'm finally done with him for good he comes bugging me again.
I really don’t know how many times one man has to be told no before he gives up.
"When will you be leaving?" I heard Esme speak from my right, feeling a hard rest on my shoulder. I sighed, letting the tension from the day run out of my body. The maternal comfort Esme gave off could always sooth my tense mind. "Well the announcement has been made, so they’re going to hold the conference tomorrow in New York. Carlisle and I will run there as soon as he gets back from the hospital." I told my adopted mother gently. I knew that she would worry, it was in her nature. Really though, I didn’t know why, there was nothing to worry about for this. We were merely going to inspect the human’s story and see what they had done.
"It’s really not that big of a deal." I said aloud, feeling Alice's questions press along my mind. "We're just going to go and end the rumors."
"Edward, what happens if it’s real?" Alice asked, her voice taking on a worried note.
I shifted my eyes to my sister. I knew that she wouldn’t like what I was about to say.
"Then we have to kill it."
Esme gasped, yanking her hand from my shoulder. "Edward!" She said in horror, not believing what I had said.
"Why would you have to kill it?" Emmett asked, his brow furrowing in confusion. Jasper spoke up for the first time from behind Emmett, unconsciously emitting feelings of worry and uncertainty throughout the room. "Wouldn't it be amazing? Something that would renovate science and bring a whole new world about from all this destruction?"
"No," I said quietly, "It would be an abomination and something that the Volterra would not allow to live for even a day. Humans are blood thirsty by nature, almost as badly as vampires. I can only imagine how they would implement an immortal in their corrupt thinking."
The room fell into a quiet mess of contemplation. Well, at least quiet for them. I stood and walked out, needing to be away from all the scrutiny and opinions that had nothing and everything to do with me.
Walking through the hallway I starred at all the happy faces' littering the painted plaster. I stopped at a picture that would always stop me. Bringing my finger up to the glass I traced it delicately along the immortal face. Though I doubt she would call this immortality.
I sighed deeply. This wasn't something that I wanted to do. I knew that it would forever damn my already damned soul. To turn a blind eye, however, to the possible destruction that could come of something like this was unacceptable. Humanity had already imposed so much destruction on itself, and if killing one 'immortal' could save a thousand mortals then I would do it.
There had already been too much carnage of innocents through the years. Too many boys forced to become men. Too many children robbed of their childhood. Too many families torn to shreds.
If I was the only one to see it then so be it. I would also carry the torch as being the only one to stop it.
"Edward."
Lifelessly I dropped my finger from the picture, turning my back to it.
"What is it Alice?"
She looked down, biting on the corner of her lip in a very human nature. I averted my eyes. I knew who she had adopted that horrible habit from.
"Something just doesn’t feel right about this all." She said quietly, looking at the picture that had caught my attention from over my shoulder. Her face dropped and she shifter forward, grabbing my hand with her smaller one. I looked up, staring into the amber eyes that matched mine in color. "Please just be careful." She said, her grip becoming stronger on my hand.
I smiled softly, pulling her into a hug.

"I’m always careful Alice."
