When Princess Ishtar was small, she was taught to play the piano.

 

She still does it, now and then as part of her princess training.

 

All the daughters of the most noble and ancient house of Phelios are taught it, like all the sons are taught fencing and all the children are taught holy magic.

 

So Princess Ishtar knows and Princess Falan knows and probably Lady Ramia knows as well.

 

Music is meant to be heard, which is why the ladies bully menfolk into coming to listen, and why they allow them selves to be bullied, and sit there swimming in sound and various degrees of love or like or both.

 

Vord listens to the strains of music seeping through the walls of the castle, and remembers when he was small and his mother played for her husband, and when he was visiting and Falan played for Illsaide.

 

He wishes momentarily that someone would play for him, then goes back to listening to Ishtar play for Darres.
