Vampire Hunter D Fan Fiction / InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Eternity ❯ A Story Revealed ( Chapter 5 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

Chiyoko, D, and Sesshoumaru had been on Naraku's trail for three days when Chiyoko's curiosity got the best of her. She knew why D and she were there… Yukio and Kei had attacked a human village, killing nearly everyone, and then had attacked them but a day later. The demon pair fled, and they gave chase… thousands of years into the past. And now they were here, and they were determined to find and stop Yukio's master, Naraku. But why was Sesshoumaru so intent upon destroying this demon, also? The great Lord was very quiet around Chiyoko and her partner, and had not said more than a few short sentences to them since their 'encounter' in the woods. And none of these gave the dhampir any insight into Sesshoumaru's intentions or motives. How could she even begin to trust someone she knew so little about?

When they stopped to make camp on the third day, Chiyoko approached D with a question on her lips.

"D, do you think I could ask Lord Sesshoumaru why it is he wants us to help him defeat Naraku? I just don't think I can be sure about him until I know more of his story. Really, the only thing we do know is that he rules the Western lands in this time… does that mean he won't betray us?" she asked her partner. Before she did anything she was unsure of, Chiyoko always liked to get D's opinion. Most of the time he gave very useful advice… and he most always right.

D seemed to ponder the question for a moment, and he adjusted his hat wearily. "It has been several days… so, yes, I think we had better ask him. After all, we have a right to know what we are getting ourselves into."

This satisfied Chiyoko, and she nodded her agreement. She was given pause at the same time, though… what would Sesshoumaru do if she were the one to ask the question? He certainly harbored her no goodwill. Deciding to suck it up, Chiyoko gritted her teeth in resignation and stalked over to were the inuyoukai was piling wood for their nightly fire.

She reached out to lightly tap his shoulder, then jerked her hand away as if she'd been burned. What had happened last time she'd done that? Sesshoumaru had shoved her face into the dirt, that's what. She didn't have to think of some more delicate way to approach him, because the lord was already on his feet and facing her not a second later.

Her breath hitched in her throat at his nearness, but she reminded herself that D was just a shout away if she found herself in any trouble. So, slightly more at ease, Chiyoko began her questioning.

"Lord Sesshoumaru, it has come to our attention that we are traveling with a very powerful stranger… you. This is troubling because we do not wish to go blindly into a fight knowing nothing about our traveling companion. I suppose what I am getting at is this: we are asking that you please explain to us exactly who this Naraku is, and why you are so inclined to help us destroy him."

From his position above her, Sesshoumaru glared. "Are you saying you do not trust me, dhampir?"

Chiyoko steeled her gaze, returning the lord's stare. "That is what I was implying, yes."

The tension between the two was thick. Both wondered how they were supposed to fight enemies together when they themselves were nearly enemies. Sesshoumaru's glare did not waver, nor did Chiyoko's. Sesshoumaru sniffed the air, then smirked at the girl before him. "It seems you partner has left us alone, girl."

Chiyoko did not want to believe him. She was strong, she knew this, but the inuyoukai was stronger than she could ever hope to be. If it came down to a fight, he would most likely win. Chiyoko realized this, and her eyes flicked around the 'camp' area. D was nowhere in sight. She could not even smell him. Sesshoumaru was not lying… they were alone, and he was but a few inches in front of her. Suddenly, she could sense everything very clearly.

His hair was like white flames in the moonlight, shifting slightly in the breeze. The great demon's scent surrounded her, and it was unmistakably strong, virile, and male. His golden eyes bore into her with their heated gaze that had begun to travel the length of her body, as if he was sizing her up.

He was sizing her up, but not for a fight. Below Chiyoko's line of sight, Sesshoumaru's hands clenched and unclenched in anticipation of his next actions.

She had no warning. One moment she was glaring at the demon, the next she was in his arms, any cries that she might have uttered muffled by the fur in her mouth. And they were not stationary any longer. Sesshoumaru had taken to the sky.

'So D will not be able to track us,' she thought with a jolt of fear. If her swords had been at their proper place on her back instead of lying on the ground waiting to be polished, perhaps the dhampir girl would have been more confident in her abilities to escape the powerful lord's grasp. 'And what a grasp, for having only one arm!' thought Chiyoko hysterically. She was very afraid where this was leading… afraid, but not for her life.

Sesshoumaru set them down gently in a field of high grass. There was nothing around them for miles, and Chiyoko wanted to scream. But strangely, Sesshoumaru hadn't yet started killing her.

His golden eyes were fixed upon Chiyoko as she backed away from him. He had even released her without a struggle… she was so very confused. He wasn't, apparently, and he took a step toward her. Chiyoko's nerves were already on edge, and the demon's sudden movement did not help. Startled, she dragged a foot behind her in an awkward step, and lost her balance immediately. As she fell back, two hands shot out and grasped her upper arms, righting her again.

Wait a minute… two arms? I thought Sesshoumaru only had one…

The confusion was written across Chiyoko's face as she stared at the youkai's new arm. Where had he gotten it? More importantly… who had he gotten it from? A faint chuckle brought Chiyoko's attention back to Sesshoumaru's face. Was he laughing at her?

"You are perhaps wondering how I acquired this arm?"

Chiyoko nodded slowly.

"I took this from Yukio the other day. The poor fool was useful for something, after all."

Sesshoumaru extended and bent his arm, curling the clawed fingers gracefully. Then again, Sesshoumaru did everything gracefully, it seemed. The arms were a very good match, claws and all. The only thing Chiyoko could see that Yukio's arm was missing were the maroon stripes across the wrist. She was sure that even this flaw annoyed the taiyoukai.

But back to the matter at hand. Why were they in a field, miles away from their camp?

"Sesshoumaru, why have we come all the way out here to discuss your motives for defeating Naraku? We could just as easily have talked about this back at camp!"

The lord sighed and looked at her as though she were a child.

"I brought us here, Chiyoko, because I wished to speak with you in private. I will tell you my story about Naraku, but in return you must tell me why you became a demon hunter. Just as you cannot yet trust me, I cannot trust you. So we have come here, to a place were there can be no distractions. And since I have taken you from your beloved partner momentarily," he said with a knowing grin, "I will speak first."

Chiyoko had in mind to glare at Sesshoumaru until he burst into flames, but decided it was best to let him tell his story first. So with a great sigh, she flopped unceremoniously onto the grass and waited for him to begin.

"One hundred years ago I traveled with three companions. One was a small demon named Jaken. He was a most trusted servant who had been with me many years. I also traveled with a two-headed dragon called Ah-Un… a very swift and loyal creature. The other was a young human girl named Rin who had been killed by wolves, and whom I revived with my Tenseiga. All were very dear to me, and all were taken from me by Naraku. I left them for only a moment, but that was all he needed to destroy all those for whom I cared.

In order to exact revenge, I joined my half-breed brother Inuyasha on his quest to unite all the shards of the Shikon no Tama… the jewel from which that pink fragment you found came. Along with his traveling companions, we found most of the pieces… and then Naraku found us. The battle was fierce. For the longest time, the battle appeared to be headed in our favor. And then Naraku stopped… toying… with us. He destroyed Inuyasha's monk and taijiya, then the kitsune, Shippou. Kouga, the wolf demon, did not last much longer, and Naraku took the shards from his body. He removed the shard from the taijiya's brother, Kohaku, and he died soon after.

When it was all over, only myself and Inuyasha's shard detector Kagome were left alive. Even my brother, who had fought so bravely… he died at the hands of that bastard. Naraku had finally gathered all the shards, and united them in order to make his wish upon the jewel. Before he could do so, Kagome shot an arrow at the jewel and shattered it like she had done those three years before. The shards were once again scattered, and Naraku was left weak after losing them. I struck at him with Toukijin, but somehow he had escaped. And so it was over.

Kagome went home… she traveled through the well just as you did. I assume she died in her time, sad and alone. She was still able to travel through the well, but I do not suppose she would have done so only to see me. I have often thought about how things would have been different, if we had defeated Naraku then. So instead of wishing and doing nothing, I have decided to fight him once more. Now that he is making his presence known, I will kill him before he can gather so many shards. Then I will complete the Shikon no Tama and revive those who died at Naraku's hands that day. They did not deserve to die. Not even my miserable little brother…"

Sesshoumaru had bowed his head at the end of this sentence, and Chiyoko felt… sorry for him. He had lost so many people. Friends, companions, even his little brother. If she had thought it was an act, the tear that slid down his porcelain cheek proved her wrong. The taiyoukai before her would not cry if he was not sincere. Crude trickery was below him, and she knew it. So now she knew why he was joining them on their hunt for Naraku, and now she was quite sympathetic toward the inuyoukai's plight.

Tentatively, she reached a slim hand out to touch his white robes. She flinched when he looked at her, but did not remove her hand. "I know how you must feel, Lord Sesshoumaru. We share similar pasts, you and I."

The youkai lord stared into the girl's eyes. "Perhaps we do… and I would like to hear your story. First, though…" he trailed. Chiyoko hadn't noticed the gleam in the demon's eyes until he was upon her.

Without warning, Sesshoumaru had settled himself on top of the dhampir. Eyes wide, Chiyoko tried to back away.

"What are you doing?" she shrieked. Sesshoumaru only grinned in response.

Taking both her wrists above her head, the youkai leaned in closer to Chiyoko. "My dear girl, I am about to make us great friends."

And then his lips were upon hers, and Chiyoko didn't want to fight him anymore.

A/N: Warning! Lemon in the next chapter! I've never written one of these before, so be gentle… like Sesshoumaru's gonna be… hehehe.
