Chapter 4~~When Cooks Gone Bad

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* 6th Period - Home Economic Class ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The bell rang signaling the start of the next class, sixth period, the last for the day. An easy class for most, yet for some it was dreaded. Home Ec., cooking, sewing, manners, but mostly cooking. Oh, yes, this class definitely had a few mixed emotions among those who took it. For Hitomi this was the worst class she could have ever found herself in. Cooking, ehh, Hitomi could not cook if her life depended on it. If it were physically possible, she'd burn water and then set fire to the kitchen. Well, maybe she wasn't that bad… who are we kidding… she was that bad.

"Class, class, settle down," the teacher Ms. Normalson demanded. Ms. Normalson was a short woman of about the age of 45. She had dark blonde hair that was tied back in a large bun and hazel eyes. She seemed to have a pleasant personality, but looks can be deceiving.

When the class continued to chatter, Ms Normalson grew angry.

"I said, shut up," she yelled out. This brought the class into order. "Thank you. Now as I was going to say we have a new student joining us today. She's fresh from Japan. Please make her feel welcome. Will you introduce yourself to the class?" She finished.

"Konnichi wa, watashi wa Kanzaki Hitomi desu. Doozo yoroshiku," She introduced herself as she gave the class a small bow. When she lifted her head, all she received were a bunch of blank stares.

"Ahh, I did it again. Gomen, I'm sorry sometimes I forget to speak English. Hello, my name is Hitomi Kanzaki. I'm pleased to meet you all," She finished with a sheepish look on her small face.

"Umm, thank you, Hitomi. Have a seat over in the corner with Serena and Alexandria. They are the only group short one member. Girls, will you raise your hands so Hitomi knows who you are," Ms Normalson said softly.

Both Alexandria and Serena raised their hands as ordered and Hitomi found her seat next to the two girls she seemed to keep running into.

'Just great, I run into this baka again. Kuso, kuso, kuso. Kami help me now,' Hitomi thought to herself as she smiled sympathetically to Serena. She didn't even give Alex a look. She was still angry about the fight they had earlier.

"Now that that's settled, I want you all to make chocolate chip cookies. The recipe is here on the board. Follow it carefully. You have the full period to finish. When you are done leave one cookie on the plate that has your group numbers on it in the back of the room." With that said, the teacher began to gather her own ingredients and proceeded to make her own cookies.

"I'm sorry about the fight at lunch Hitomi," Serena began "Alex sometimes gets carried away when things don't go her way." she finished. Alex glared at Serena.

"That's alright; it was partially my fault, too. I'm still grumpy about being sent here to America. Gomen nasai Serena-san, Alexandria-san, forgive me for being a royal bitch today," Hitomi apologized.

"Eh, that's alright, I've been having a bad day today. I guess you would say that I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I'll forget about our rumble if you forget it," Alex said with a smile.

'If she is a slayer, I guess I have to be civil to her. Though she doesn't know it yet, I can tell. After Rena told me, I wouldn't believe her but then I noticed it. She has strength not even she herself knows about. I could see the need for battle in her eyes as we fought. The wisdom she holds in her emerald eyes. She past part of the test, she'll make a good slayer,' Alex thought to herself.

'Alex knows it now. I can read it through her eyes. She knows the truth behind Hitomi; Alex knows Hitomi's a slayer and that she doesn't know it yet,' Serena thought to herself as she looked into the eyes of her best friend and fellow slayer and then into the eyes of the newest member of their group.

'Serena-san's nice, I like her, but Alexandria-san, I don't know about her. She's hiding something from me. I might have to use the cards to see what she's hiding, why she and Serena-san feel different from other people,' Hitomi thought to herself.

'If she's willing to be nice I might as well try to be as well. I do need more friends,' Hitomi continued.

After a few moments of heavy silence, Serena felt the need to lighten things up.

"Well, enough chitchat! We've got cookies to bake. So let's get all the ingredients gathered and then begin mixing them together," Serena said as she quickly wrote down the recipe from off the board.

"Ok, now, Alex, I want you crack the eggs into this bowl. Hitomi, could you measure out the flour? I will measure out the sugar," Serena instructed.

Each girl began her task.

Alex gathered the necessary amount of eggs for the recipe and grabbed a bowl. Everything was going good for her 'til she cracked open the first egg. The shell shattered into hundreds of small shards. Many of which found their way into the bowl along with the egg. Grabbing a fork and cursing under her breath, she proceeded to fish out the shell pieces. Snatching the next egg, she began again. Only to repeat the same process as before. Mumbling a few choice words under her breath, she fished out the shells once again.

"Are you ok, Lex?" Serena asked.

"No! These stupid eggshells are pissing me off. They keep crumbling and falling into the bowl," She grumbled as she gripped the fork and prepared to maul the eggs further into oblivion.

"Ok, well, here try measuring out the milk then," Serena said, grimacing at the mess Alex had made with the eggs.

Looking over to see if Hitomi was ok, she noticed there was fine white powder covering not only Hitomi's part of the table, but also the flour was all over Hitomi. She was wearing more of the powder than she had in the measuring cup.

"Great, I have two kitchen destroyers on my hands," Serena mumbled under her breath.

"What was that, Rena?" Alex asked.

"Ok, listen here. Sit your bony asses down. Watch what I'm doing. Touch anything and your both dead. Got it? Sit, watch, touch and die," Serena growled, as fire danced in her blue orbs.

After a few calming breaths, Serena sat down on her stool. The only problem there was she missed the stool and landed on her butt on the cold linoleum floor. Peals of laughter erupt from her best friend, Alex, and her new friend, Hitomi.

"I meant to do that you know. I purposely moved my stool earlier so that I could break the ice. Yup, this was all craftily planned out," Serena giggled out with a sweat drop forming on her brow.

"Sure, Rena you planned to have a klutz attack. Your just as bad as that girl with your name in those manga your so interested. Sailor Moon, I think it was called," Alex said as rich laughter emerged from the brunette.

"Serena-san, you're goofy yet scary. One moment you're spitting fire, the next you're a klutz. It worked though; you broke the ice like you said you would. Now come on lets get these cookies made before class is over so we don't have to stay late," Hitomi said as she smiled and let a few giggles escape her lips.

"Right, now remember what I said don't touch or else I'll spit fire at you," Serena said in a childish voice.

"Right," both Hitomi and Alex muttered to themselves and they sat down on their stools and preceded to hand Serena the ingredients. No harm could come out of handing things to her.

Thirty minutes later and new friendships made, the girls pulled their tray of cookies out of the oven to let them cool down.

"Hitomi what are you doing today after class?" Alex asked the emerald-eyed girl she just met that day.

"Um, nothing really. Homework, I guess, but I don't know really. Why do you ask?" Hitomi responded.

"Well, I was wondering if you would like to come over to my place to hang with Rena and me. We can eat our cookies, do our homework, and get to know each other better."

"Sounds good to me."

"All right then! You'll come and hang with us today," Serena said bringing herself into the conversation.

After a few more minutes of chatting, the cookies were cooled off enough to place one on the designated plate in the back of the room and then place the others on a paper plate to take home. They then cleaned up their station.

After a few more minutes of useless chatting, the bell rang and the three girls walked out of the school and down the road where they caught a bus that took them close enough to Alex's house to walk the rest of the way.
