BLACKENED ROSE
Chapter Three
.:. .:. .:. .:. .:. .:. .:.
Allen sat at the breakfast table poking his food around. He wasn't hungry; not at all. Not after what he had overheard from the maids last night.
"Did you hear?" one of them had whispered to him. "The Mystic Moon girl slept in Lord Folken's room last night!"
At first he hadn't believed it, but afterwards, he had to admit that the rumor was likely to be true. He'd sensed that the girl had a crush on him, and with his ideas of Folken's true nature, he could only assume that the man had taken advantage of that.
Allen knew that what he felt for Hitomi wasn't quite true love. It was more of a yearning for the sister who had been taken from him. He knew this now, and was willing to distance himself from her, but, all the same, wouldn't mind marrying Hitomi. She just put him so much at ease. He felt so comfortable in her sunny presence.
When Folken and Hitomi entered the dining hall at the same time, rather close to each other, Allen's suspicions were confirmed. They had definitely slept together the previous night.
Oh, Hitomi, he thought. What have you gotten yourself into now? This man has a past that will catch up to him eventually...
Folken and Hitomi sat across from each other and seemed to have a full conversation using glances and looks alone. Allen looked down at his plate and wondered at how quickly everything had happened. They were the most unlikely pair of lovers he'd ever met. Well, besides the time he'd seen the Mole Man with his Mole Girlfriend, but that was another matter entirely.
.:. .:. .:. .:. .:. .:. .:.
"What will you do when I'm gone?" Folken asked, once they were safely out of Allen's earshot and strolling in the gardens.
"Go back home? I don't know. Folken, there is definitely a death in your future, but it doesn't have to be yours. You can change fate if you really put your mind to it. I found that out at Millerna's wedding---if I hadn't wanted the disaster to happen with some part of me, it wouldn't have. So, if you really don't want to die, you will find a way around it."
"And I have learned through years of experience that fate is inescapable. I will die, but I'll sacrifice myself for the life of others."
Hitomi frowned. "You don't know---"
"I do know what I'm talking about, Hitomi. Just accept the future. Come, let's not discuss this any further. I can see you're getting frustrated."
"Do you think fate meant for us to be together?"
Folken looked into those deep green eyes. "No," he said. "I don't."
.:. .:. .:. .:. .:. .:. .:.
Hitomi set the flowers down in front of Folken's grave and wept. If only she had been right...
If only...
But it was pointless to assume that she'd had anything to do with fate. It had run its course, and Folken was its casualty.
