CHAPTER 1: The Black-Robed Phantom
Hitomi
"I can't believe it! It's been 3 years and I still haven't got a clue how to return to Gaea" Hitomi exclaimed. "Why did I give Van my pendant? I wonder if I'll ever see him again. Does he even remember me? Oh well, stop talking about it. I have to keep trying." Hitomi focused her thoughts unsuccessfully on returning to Gaea for the thousandth time that day, her hands digging into the sides of her bed in frustration.
In the corner of her room, a pair of red eyes watched Hitomi moan to herself unnoticed. They were followed by several more pairs as she shrugged herself under the covers and put out her lamp, still grumbling to herself . As the light went out, strangely, the bodies come into sharper focus, their black-robed bodies emitting a soft, white light that seemed to come from their very soul. Hitomi began to fall asleep, oblivious, and the red-eyed men circled in closer, red eyes twinkling, mouths opening, and tongues licking their cheeks in nervous excitement.
When they had surrounded Hitomi's bed on all sides, they began to chant. Softly at first, then getting louder and louder, until they reached a roaring crescendo and ere yelling at the top of their lungs. And they yelled still louder:
To thou, slayer of Dornkirk
Keeper of alchemy and Fate
Sleeping child, may his spirit, in you
seek its wrath
As Zaibach is reborn
May your blood flow freely
in our cup of glory
At the word 'glory', the men threw their hands into the air and Hitomi began to glow a harsh blue that threw her features into sharp contrast. The light was quite similar to when Hitomi had first gone to Gaea...
Van
Van felt a throb in his chest, the mark of the terrible sense of loss that had been his almost constant companion for 3 years. Would Hitomi never come back to him? "I should go find her myself" he stated to himself for the hundredth time, and almost reluctantly he drew himself from his throne. He walked calmly to the temple room where Escaflowne slept. The guards let him pass. He had come to this room every day, without fail, for several frustrated weeks now. Nothing ever happened, though he performed the ritual to awaken Escaflowne perfectly every time. He decided to try a slightly modified version of the ritual now, almost pleading to the ever watching Ispano Clan.
Instead of a new energist, which he had brought with him every day except today, he cut open his palm and s smeared the blood on the dead energist that lay dormant in the Escaflowne's heart chamber. He spoke the words.
"I, Van Fanel, king of New Fanalia, once again bind myself to thee Escaflowne, the eternal protector of my bloodline. Thou sleeping dragon, awake!"
For a few seconds, nothing happened, and Van about wept for sorrow. Then, the Escaflowne began to flash, spitting red sparks everywhere, so even Van had to shield his eyes. It stopped spitting after a while, and the whole of it was engulfed in a black light. When the light faded, Escaflowne was gone.
Van stood still for a moment as shock overcame him. Something had happened this time, no dissimilar to every other day and...Escaflowne was gone. This was all wrong. What had he done? He had performed the ceremony correctly, nothing should have spurred that...whatever-had-just-happened. With a sharp pang of the unlogical rage and frustration characteristic to Van, he screamed and glared at the guards as he stalked to a place where he could calm himself down. To his brother's eternal resting place.
When he reached it, a single yellow rose cradled against his chest, he could only gasp in horror at the dirty hole that was all that was left of his brother's grave. It looked as if it had been ripped apart. Pieces of wood, obviously from Folken's coffin, were everywhere. His body was nowhere to be found.
Before anger, Van felt a great sense of confusion. What? Van thought to himself. What is happening here? No one would dare to touch a prince of Fanalia's grave! The anger came then. "If I ever lay hands on him,he will be fed to the dragons,i'll make sure of it." He spoke more softly and lay the rose in the middle of the empty hole. "Do not worry brother.I will find you." He walked back into the palace, his gaze just missing a gray, mechanical arm that lay forgotten in the bushes.
Murder raged in Van's heart and flared in his eyes. Escaflowne was gone. Folken was gone. He was still alone. He wanted to see someone punished for this. "I will not rest or eat until I have caught this culprit!" he yelled into an empty hallway.
As Van rambled on to himself about ripping the perpetrator limb from limb,a black-robed figure with red eyes separated itself from the shadows.Van swept around, old instincts sounding alarms in his head.He looked right through the advancing figure. Van didn't notice a thing until the crook of a dagger penetrated his right shoulder.A foreign substance entered his veins, and he barely had time to gasp before he fell unconscious.
Hitomi
##################################### ###################################
There was Gaea in all its splendor, Hitomi was flying in closer and closer to it, she could see the enormous tree that marked Fanalia below her. Would she see Van? Like a movie coming in for a dramatic close-up, Hitomi found herself among the occupants. Van stood right in front of her. She inhaled deeply, catching his scent, a unique mixture of leather, metal and cinnamon. She had missed it so much.
It wasn't until she was about to make herself known that she saw a figure behind Van, closing in on him, steps predatory. Dilandau. To her horror, Van didn't turn around to meet him or draw his sword, and Dilandau raised his blade over his head with an insane howl. Hitomi ran toward him, yelling Van's name desperately, but she ran into an invisible wall that she pounded against frantically, screaming. An equally invisible gag stuffed itself in her mouth, and Hitomi could only watch in horror as Dilandau brought his sword down, smashing Van's head open, his eyes open wide in surprise. The air was filled with white feathers and Dilandau's hysterical laughter. Merle appeared, and she ran to Van's side with a cry. Her sobs mingled with Dilandau's giggles.
"Hitomi!" she cried. "Hitomi! Where are you?!"
########################################################### #############
"Hitomi!" a voice, not from her dream/vision, woke Hitomi up abruptly. Her eyes lazily focused in on a girl that would cause society to throw up their hands. Cotton-candy pink hair cut in a page-boy cut ran errantly into a decidedly cat-like face. A face accented by an equally cat-like body, complete with tail. The cat-girl shook Hitomi jerkily, tail waving agitatedly. "Merle?" Hitomi asked, shaking her head as if by doing so Merle would magically disappear and everything would make sense.
The cat-girl flung her arms around Hitomi, pressing her into a bed that Hitomi decided was definitely not her own. "Oh Hitomi!" Merle cried. "I wasn't sure you would ever wake up. I couldn't stand it if I lost you too!" Suddenly, Merle burst into tears, her cat-like ears pressed against her skull. Hitomi was still in a daze.
"Merle?" she repeated. "Where am I? Am I really on Gaea again? Am I..."
She was interrupted by a particularly loud sob from Merle. Hitomi focused on Merle for the first time. "What's wrong, Merle? Surely it can't be that bad. Why don't you go to Van? I'm sure he would-"
At the mention of Van, Merle wailed at the top of her voice, sounding like an alleycat on a midnight outing, and ran from the room, leaving Hitomi shocked behind her. 'Oh no' Hitomi thought. 'Van can't be... he couldn't be...not Van! Could he?
Van
Van Fanel, king of New Fanalia, woke up groggily from his drugged sleep. Where was he? For some reason, he couldn't get his bearings. It made him dizzy, and the ground seemed to be desperately trying to reach out and grab him. He realized with a start that he couldn't see. Everything was dark. He couldn't move, even to try to stop the ground from moving out from under him. A wave of terror washed over him as the ground once again threatened to swallow him up. He could be anywhere. The king of New Fanalia had many enemies. But then again, did he?
Asstyria and 'Fread were allied to him. All the free nations were allied to him. Except Zaibach. But Zaibach didn't have the resources or manpower anymore necessary to kidnap a king, though he did admit to himself that they had an incentive. After Folken had killed Dornkirk and his "Ultimate Destiny" had been destroyed, Zaibach had lost the hub of it's economy, it's power. Kidnapping Van would invoke the wrath of every country within hundreds of miles of Zaibach. So then who?
Van's slightly hysterical thoughts were interrupted when two voices, one almost joyfully happy, began to speak beside him. "I think he's awake" the happy one said, and Van had a double-take as he recognized the voice of Dalet from Dilandau's Dragonslayers. "Good" the other voice replied, Chesta, also a Dragonslayer. "I was starting to think Master Dilandau had killed him." Dalet giggled at that, bending over Van, the drink on his breath making itself known as the source of his giddiness. "Naw, Dilandau's changed. He had direct orders from the emperor, and he's still afraid he'll be trapped inside Celena again." His mood switched from happy to angry in an instant. "That bastard! Every time the big man threatens him, he takes it out on us, his faithful underlings. That poser! And besides,-" He turned complacent in an instant, bending over so close to Van's face Van had to check his automatic grimace of disgust at the smell. "Celena's as good as dead anyway. Don't know why the man keeps that little ho around. For kicks, ya think?" Dalet giggled again, and Chesta kicked him in the ribs, making him collapse right on top of Van. His breath went out in a whoof. "Shut up Dalet, you idiot! You wanna just give him all of Zaibach's secrets right now? What if he's listening ?"
A hand pushed Van's face farther into the hard floor. 'So that's where I am' Van thought to himself. 'I'm really in Zaibach'. "Don't worry about it!" Dalet slurred out. "He's out of it!" Dalet shook Van's head around, increasing the dizzy feeling. "See?"
Chesta snorted. "Fine. Go report to Lord Folken, not that that Fanalian dragon spawn has any power here, but Neo-Emperor Adelfis wants us to play along with him for some reason." Dalet snorted back, and got up with difficulty.
Van was unable to suppress a gasp. Folken?! No, these must be the men that had stolen Folken's body, and they were playing some kind of sick game with it. Van began to struggle violently, fighting against the drugs in his veins and the ropes that bound his limbs. They would pay.
"Woah, Chesta, he's movin' again!" Dalet's voice said again, warmth near Van's right arm telling him where the Slayer was. "Just give him some more sleepie juice," Chesta answered in a bored tone of voice. Dalet answered back, his voice a little clearer. "But, I don't know the dosage. What if I accidentally kill him?"
"Then blame it on the Eleventh Precinct like you always do and it'll be fine!" Chesta called back. "Come on, I'm tired of looking at his mug. Let's go to the Recreation Room. I'll buy you another drink."
"Well, all right." Dalet answered back. Van tried to struggle even harder when he felt a hand grab his arm and push the sleeve up. A needle poked into his skin, searching for a vein. When it found one, Van lapsed into unconsciousness again.
