Chapter 11
Dena was no longer Dena. No…she had to be some one else…right? "Why did he call me that?" she thought to herself. She suddenly had images of that blonde haired man appear before her. Those blue eyes, angelic hair, that voice…"He's an angel…" she said to herself with tears rolling down her face. Suddenly those voices spoke up again in her mind:
killyoourself
killyourselfnow
sajfskajfsfdjakjfaskjf
fjsak fjskfasldf
dfasdfsdfsd
fsfasdfasdf
safasdfsadf
"I am a demon aren't I?" Dena said aloud into the cold night, "I need to end this…" Then she was silent. Those noises inside her head could be faintly heard, but they still drove her mad. "Oh!" she said suddenly noticing a flying ship nearby. "This place is perfect for me to rest for the last time…" Then she flew towards it.

Allen, Van, Merle, Ellios, and Cerena were all on Escaflowne together flying as fast as they could to the Crusade. "Van!" Allen shouted to him, "Can't you make this thing go any faster?!" "I'm trying damnit!" Van shouted back. "Van-sama!" Merle shouted, "try harder! We need to hurry! Just because stupid Jaquan said it's too late to save her doesn't necessarily mean it really is!" Ellios looked at Merle for a moment. "That's the most intelligent thing I've ever heard you say!" Merle hissed angrily at him waking up Cerena. "Allen?" Cerena asked with a scratchy voice. Allen immediately forgot his troubles for a moment as he knelt over by his sister. "It's going to be okay Cerena," he began brushing through her hair, "Me and Ellios will both protect you…" "It's not that," Cerena said grabbing her throat, "I just don't feel too good…" "We'll get you back to the Crusade as soon as possible." Ellios said looking into her eyes, "I promise." Cerena smiled and closed her eyes for a few moments.
"C'mon Escaflowne," Van told Escaflowne, "I know your Drag-Energist level is low but…we need to hurry to save Dena!" Suddenly the Energist light on Escaflowne lit up. "Okay!" Van said grinning, "Hold on tight! This thing goes very quickly!" Everyone grabbed tightly as Escaflowne began to speed up. About a half-minute later they were going over 90 miles per hour. Ellios held on tightly to Cerena as Cerena clung onto Ellios. Allen held on as tightly as he could to Escaflowne praying to the gods above that they weren't going to be too late. Merle had an extremely good grip on Escaflowne…at first.
A minute later Merle felt like she was slipping or something…but she ignored it. "Hey! I'm a cat girl!" Merle thought to herself, "I could never slip and fall! My nails are way too-" Suddenly she felt herself slipping. Before she had the chance to scurry back up, she was falling. "VAN-SAMA!" She shouted as she fell into the forests bellow.
"Merle?" Van asked looking behind him. "Don't talk to her now Van!" Allen said facing Van's head forward, "We're almost there! See?" Allen was right. "Okay!" Van said as he slowed down Escaflowne and prepared to put it on the port. While Escaflowne was transforming back to its original form, Allen jumped off and ran as fast as he could to the top of the Crusade.
"Oh happy sword…" Dena said as she gently glided it against her neck, "You going to take me home now…" "DENA!!" someone shouted behind her. She ignored it preparing to cut herself. Allen began to run up to her faster when Van appeared in front of him. Van used his sword to knock away Allen's, to prevent Dena from killing herself. She looked up and saw a man with black hair and brown eyes. "Never throw your life away." Van said as he put away his sword.
After Allen recovered his sword he walked over to Dena and knelt down to her. "Dena don't you remember me? Dena?" "Why do you keep calling me that?!" she shouted looking angrily at Allen. "What going on out here?" a familiar voice said from behind everyone. Allen rolled his eyes and said, "Dryden…" Dryden stopped dead in his tracks and stared at Dena. "It's her…" he said, "…why does she seem more different than before…hey… her eyes…" "She's under a spell." Van explained, "Jaquan daLarzas assisted in the process…Emperor Diamenn of Zaibach is the one behind this…" "Who are you people?!" Dena shouted standing up, "I'm supposed to be alone! No one ever cared for me!" Cerena then saw visions again:
"NO! DON'T LEAVE ME ALONE! GAAAAAA!!!"
"We need to put him to sleep and do further experiments on him."
"Chesta! Gatti! Dalet!"
"Jajuka!"
"Hey! Don't take that girl away! Cerena! Cerena!"
Cerena shook her head as she began to feel very dizzy. "Why now?" Cerena asked to herself, "Everyone around me…first Jaquan and now Dena…what does it mean…why do I keep seeing him? Then she fainted, with Ellios catching her.
Allen began to think that this was hopeless. He got up, went to her and said, "Listen…at least stay with us…whoever you are…" "Who am I anyway?" she asked again with her eyes shaking. "You were Dena," Allen replied, "but I'm not so sure anymore…"
"Wow," she thought to herself, "He seems to really want me to stay…am I that important to him?" After a few moments of thinking she spoke up again. "Could I really stay with you for a while angel?" she asked with a bit of hope in her eyes. Allen smiled…maybe things could still be the same between him and this new form of Dena's…he knew not even Dryden could figure out how to reverse this kind of process …so they would have to make the best of it. "Of course." Allen said. Dena then grabbed Allen and cried into his shoulder.
Suddenly the flames suffocating Dena exploded out of her system. She could breath again…she was free…
"Allen?" Dena asked as suddenly she saw a transparent image of him and her hugging each other. "ALLEN!" Dena said running towards the transparent image. She sprouted her wings and went right through the image.
Dena lifted up her head and looked into Allen's eyes. "Allen." She said. Allen blinked and then looked at Dena again. Allen then realized Dena was back to normal. "Dena!" he said happily as he hugged her. "Is she cured?" Dryden asked. "No really." Milerna said rolling her eyes. "Sorry miss jealously!" Dryden said. Milerna stomped on his foot then muttered, "Shut up." "I'm so glad you're back Dena." Allen said letting go of her. "Yeah me too…"
Suddenly Dena fainted and Allen caught her the moment she fell. "Oh god," Allen said as he felt Dena's forehead, "She has a fever too…Milerna!" Milerna spun around and said, "Yes Allen?" "Can you take care of both Cerena and Dena for me? They have bad fevers." Even though Milerna was extremely jealous of both Cerena and Dena, she couldn't help but feel sorry for them. "Aww…the poor things…" Milerna said as she felt both of their foreheads. "Hey hon," Dryden said, "Could I help ya out?" "Sure Dryden…" Milerna replied smiling, "take Dena for me okay? I know that she'd rather have you help her than me…" Dryden thought about what she said for a moment. "Why's that Mil-?" He then realized she was already inside. "Oh…" Dryden said, "I better follow her inside…" "I'm following too…" Allen said as he followed behind Dryden.
Allen walked to Cerena and Dena's room where Milerna and Dryden were taking care of them. Cerena was dead asleep but was moaning in pain. "Shhh…its okay…" Milerna said as she patted a damp cloth on Cerena's head. Allen smiled. "You're a very good doctor you know Milerna." Allen said as he looked at her. "Thank you Allen." Milerna said smiling back at him. Suddenly Cerena started coughing like crazy. "Ow!" Dena shouted with her hoarse voice. "Hey! I'm just trying to help okay?" "Well you're not helping Dryden…I don't want a scalding hot cloth on my head!" Then Dena coughed and cleared her throat. "Ow…" Dena said as he grabbed her neck in pain. Milerna then realized she needed help to calm Cerena's coughing down. "Dryden!" Milerna said, "Let Allen take care of Dena, come and help me with Cerena…you don't mind do you Allen?" "No not at all." Allen said smiling, "Just take care of my sister…"
Allen looked at his sister concerned as she kept coughing nonstop. "My poor sister…" Allen thought to himself. Then he heard Dena cough and moan in pain. "Oh god…" she said as she put her arm on her forehead, "…back on Earth I could have at least taken a Tylenol to cool my fever down…stupid Dryden just gave me a headache…" Allen laughed a little as he walked towards Dena. "I know how you feel," Allen said as he felt her forehead, "Gee…your fever hasn't cooled down much has it?" Dena shook her head slowly. Allen brushed through her hair and said," I know how to take care of you…this also happened to Hitomi when she was here too…" Then Allen got off the bed and walked off with the bowl of water Dryden had used earlier.
While Allen was gone, Dena looked over towards Cerena, who had finally stopped coughing. Cerena sat there and gasped for air as Milerna tried to calm her down and gave her advice on breathing. "Poor Cerena…" Dena thought to herself, "I bet she's in a worse condition than I am." Milerna then put a cloth on top of Cerena's head and said, "There…you're fine now…" "Thank you Milerna…" Cerena said with her scratchy voice. "Shh…" Milerna said, "You'll hurt your voice…don't talk…" "Okay," Cerena said smiling. Then she looked at Dena, smiled and said, "Tell Dena hi." Dena waved and smiled.
A few minutes later Allen came back, with some flowers, a medicine bottle, and of course, the bowl with a cloth in it. "Allen…" Dena said, "This is so sweet…" Allen then put his finger on her lip. "Shh…you're voice is too hoarse to talk…" Allen said. Then he took his finger off. Dena blushed a bright red and hid under the covers. Allen set the bouquet of flowers in a bottle and put some water in it, to keep it fresh. Then he took the damp cloth and put it over Dena's head. When the cloth went on her head, Dena ahhed in delight as she got out of the covers and closed her eyes in relaxation. "That feels good doesn't it?" Allen said. Dena nodded her head a little, being careful not to let the cloth fall off her head. Allen smiled and held her hand.
Allen held Dena's hand for a long while. He looked into her eyes, those beautiful, shinny green eyes, even deeper and more beautiful than Hitomi's. When he looked at her, he didn't see his sister, or Marlene, or anyone he had ever loved. No…he only saw the beautiful 'angel girl' Dena Takichina Khan. "How can I just leave her?" Allen thought to himself, "I don't want to loose her by not telling her…but if I did tell her…it would crush her heart…no…it would crush her heart even more if I just left out of nowhere…I think that's what happened between my mother and father…father left without saying goodbye …"
Soon Allen's smile turned into a frown and his happy, blue eyes turned into sad, gray eyes as he looked away out the window. "Why did he suddenly become sad?" Dena asked herself, "Maybe I should ask him…no…what if he gets mad?…no! That's what Jeremiah would do…oh! Forget him! I just need to find out why Allen is sad…"
"Allen?" Dena asked with her sore voice, "What's wrong?" "Its nothing…" Allen said quietly as he got off the bed. Then he remembered the medicine he was supposed to give her. "Oh I almost forgot…" he said changing the subject. "Allen…" Dena said annoyed, "you changed the subject!" "Close your eyes and open your mouth…" Allen said. "Why?" Dena asked. "Trust me…you don't want to know…" Allen said as he began to pour medicine on a spoon. "Why do you want me to close my eyes to take medicine?" Dena asked lifting an eyebrow. "This stuff is really strong," Allen explained, "It makes your eyes water. If you close them that won't happen…but the taste…oh god…you might end up throwing up if you're not prepared for it so I'm warning you now…" "Oh I'm sure it's not that bad…" Dena said. "All right…", Allen said, "But don't say I didn't warn you…Can you close you eyes and open your mouth now?" "Okay." Dena said as she did as she was told.
After she swallowed down the medicine, she realized Allen was right about the taste part; she nearly coughed up her medicine it was so bad. To her it tasted like a skunk, bird poop, the most rotten egg in the world, 2 gallons of rotted milk, and a touch of caviar…all rolled into one disgusting bottle. Dena's face looked like she had looked at the Mole man naked and was practically speechless. "Told you…" Allen said, "but look on the bright side…you'll be better by tonight…your fever will be gone…" "Really?" Dena asked surprised. "Yeah." Dryden said cutting in, "Here on Gaea, we have very good resources in science that people on the Visionary Moon do not have." "Visionary Moon?" Dena asked. "It's another name we have for the Mystic Moon." Allen explained. "Oh…Dena said.
While Allen was looking off somewhere, Eries caught his eyes because she was motioning for him to come over. Allen looked at Dena and said, "I'll be right back." Allen then got up and walked over to Eries. "Yes mamn?" Allen asked Eries outside the room. "Allen…I've received word from Fried that they have rebuilt the palace…" Eries said in a serious tone, "we're leaving tomorrow…" Allen's pupils shrunk. "But-but…I thought we had a week or more…" "What did I just say Allen?" Eries said getting annoyed. "I heard what you said your majesty…" Allen muttered. Eries nodded and said, "You are dismissed."
Allen slowly walked back to where Dena lied. Tomorrow…that's when he would be gone…for a long time. He knew he had to tell her now so he went close to her face, looked into her eyes and said, "Dena…" "Allen?" Dena asked as she looked into his distressed eyes. "There's…there's something I need to tell you…" Allen said gently as he held her hand. Dena looked at Allen, then looked at the hand that was holding hers. "Oh my god is my dream coming true?" Dena asked herself.
Out of the blue, Van came barging in the door, out of breath. "What on earth-?" Milerna asked surprised. "Has any one seen Merle?!" Van asked out of breath, "I haven't seen her since we got off Escaflowne!" "Hey I thought she was trailing along with you!" Allen said putting his hands up. "No kidding!" Van said stomping his foot. Cerena stirred awake from that stomp. "Van!" Cerena said, "Why'd ya wake me up?!" Allen then got pissed, "Van calm down…" he said trying not to loose his cool, "Are you sure you looked everywhere?" "Yes I'm sure!" Van said. "Have you tried using your pendant?" Dena asked. Van looked at Dena and shook his head. Then he held up the pendant and just stood there.
After a few moments Van slapped his face and said, "Oh god…" "What? Where is she?" Cerena and Dena asked. Van looked at them and said with his head down, "She's in the forest…" "What?!" Allen said. "Remember earlier?" Van asked, "I just knew something happened to Merle! But nooo! You have to go and turn my head and say, 'Oh! Lets save Dena! Lets save HER!…'" "Gee Van!" Allen shouted blushing, "It seems like you care a lot about Merle!" "Well she's the only family I've got okay?!" Van shouted back, "At least you have family! You have a sister!" "Hey! I'm glad I have my sister but hey! At least you knew your father! I never knew mine until I went to the Mystic Valley!" "Well at least-!" "Stop!" Dena moaned then coughed. "Yeah! Come on Van!" Cerena said, "If you really are a king, Van, then act like one!" Van put down his head angrily and ran off.
Allen then realized he had upset Dena so he went over to her and kissed her hand. "I'm sorry Dena, I shouldn't have yelled like that…" "It's…its okay." Dena said, "Anyways…what were you saying before?" Allen shook his head and said, "Uhh…I…" Allen then felt weak in the knees. He had already upset Dena and didn't want to upset her again. "Uhhh…tell you what," Allen said getting an idea, "Why don't you umm… talk to me tonight after you feel better on top of the Crusade?" Then he began to walk off.
Before Allen left the door he added one more thing saying, "…and come alone…" then he left.
"Ooohhh…" Milerna said grinning, "Someone wants to be 'alone' with you…" Cerena and Milerna giggled together when they saw Dena blushing. "Oh I'm sure it had nothing to do with…" Dena began. "Oh really?" Cerena interrupted, "Then how come I saw you two come this close," she put her two fingers a half inch away from each other, "to kissing…" Milerna gasped, "You're kidding? Oh my god…" "You-you saw us Cerena?" Dena said blushing, "I-I was just trying to uhh…I guess I felt daring and uh…it didn' t work…" "Well maybe you should try again!" Milerna said, "After all…this will be the last time you'll see him for a long, long while!" "What?" Dena said shocked.
"Oh he didn't tell you?" Milerna said, "Almost everyone on the ship knows that! He's leaving with Eries and Prince Chid. Chid needed a new bodyguard so Eries decided Allen would be it…" Dena, since her fever was gone now, got up and looked at Milerna. "Allen is leaving?" Dena said with tears in her eyes. "Yep," Milerna said, "and I think that's what he was trying to…" Dena then couldn't take it anymore. She burst out the door and ran as far away as she could.
She ran and ran until she got to the cleaning room. She tripped over someone's shoes and fell down in a pile of clothes. She then started crying hard. Tears came pouring down her face, her body shook, and she felt like her life had just been shattered. "Allen was," she said into the clothes, "…Allen was trying to just leave me without saying goodbye! I should have known he doesn't give a damn about me! Why does he have to leave?" "Hey…hey…" a familiar voice said behind her.
Dena lifted her head and realized it was Gaddes. "Gaddes?" Dena said. "Awww…" Gaddes said as he wiped some of Dena's tears, "it ain't that bad…you'll see Allen again…maybe next month, next year…" "But he tried to leave without letting me know…" Dena said. "Oh?" Gaddes said, "How do you know that?" "Well…" Dena began as Gaddes continued to wipe her tears, "…he kept stuttering and stuff like that…it's as if he didn't really want to tell me he was leaving…" "Oh and how do you know that?" Gaddes said again. "Well," Dena continued, "I just assumed…" "Well there you go," Gaddes said, "you can't just assume things sweetie…especially with Allen…" Then Gaddes looked around the place for a moment, to see if anyone was around, besides them. "Listen," Gaddes began whispering in her ear, "Allen really cares about you…trust me I'm his best bud…if you feel the same way about him, now would be a good time to confess it…" "But…" Dena said looking into Gaddes' eyes afraid, "…I'm too scared to…and what if you're wrong?" "If you really love him you shouldn't be afraid to tell him…no matter what the outcome," Gaddes said patting her head, "I'll watch from behind you, okay?" "No..." Dena said as she got up, "I already promised Allen I would come alone to him later…" "Oh!" Gaddes said as he laughed a little, "See…there's a sign that he does mean business!" Dena laughed a little as she walked off.
Allen gazed into the late night sky as he impatiently waited for Dena. "Did she forget?" Allen said to himself, "…or maybe she doesn't feel better yet…" Allen felt so nervous about this, even with his casual white shirt and black pants on. He knew this was going to crush her heart, and was prepared to hold her in his arms to comfort her. Then she came. "Dena…" he said as he opened his arms to her.
Dena looked at Allen and then put her head down. She felt like her heart was pounding a hundred miles per hour, and was going to be sick. "Oh god…" Dena said, "I can't do this…" Allen walked up to her with a concerned look in his eyes, gave her a hug and said, "What wrong Dena?" Dena squeezed Allen tightly. She knew that if he didn't feel the same way about her that she felt for him, she was going to lose a best friend. "Allen," Dena began, "Milerna told me that you're going tomorrow…" Allen let go of her and looked into her eyes. She had been crying. "Dena…" he said as he put his hand on her cheek. Dena closed her eyes with the touch of his hand. His hands were so warm to her. "A-Allen…" Dena said as she opened her eyes and looked at Allen, "I need to-to tell you something…" Allen took his hand off of her cheek and looked into her eyes. They looked very scared and unsure now…but they were still just as deep and beautiful as ever.
"What is it?" Allen asked holding her hand, "You don't have to hide anything from me Dena." He took her hand and kissed it, " You have the word of Allen Schezar…" "Allen…" Dena said as he held his hands in hers, "No…no matter what I tell you…we'll still be friends right?" "Of course." Allen said smiling, "I'll always be there for you Dena, no matter how far apart we may get…" "And," Dena continued, "what I'm about to tell you is probably the most ridiculous thing ever…and you need to promise me you won't laugh…" "Okay I promise." Allen said kissing her hand again, "now…tell me…what is it?" Dena knew that Allen and his beautiful blue eyes would never lie to her, so she got up all of her courage and said, "Allen…I know I've only known you for a short while and…" then she looked down on the ground as she continued, "since now that you're leaving and everything…I thought it was time I confessed something to you…" Allen looked at Dena with a little bit of surprise in his eyes. Dena then looked up at Allen and said, "I love you Allen Schezar."
Allen gasped in shock. She really did love him, didn't she? Allen gently brought Dena over to him and led her towards his chest. Dena leaned on Allen's chest putting her two hands on it. "You're so warm Allen…" Dena said as she closed her eyes. Dena then felt Allen put his hands on her back as he held her closer to him. "Dena," Allen said, "I'm going to miss you so much now…because now I know how you truly feel…" Dena got off of Allen for a moment. "Allen?" Dena said, "Do you…umm…feel the same about…" "Yes." Allen replied as he moved in a little to her. Dena never felt so happy in her life. This was even better then when Jeremiah confessed his love for her. She put her hands on his neck and kissed him.
Dena felt like the angels of heaven were kissing her. Allen knew exactly what he was doing, and made the kiss very passionate, long, and slow. Allen felt like the gods had blessed him. She kissed him so well. Every move she made was perfect, her hands moved gracefully along his neck. After a long while, they stopped kissing. Allen and Dena breathed for air as Allen then brought Dena up to his chest again. Dena sighed as she leaned onto his chest again. "Allen?" a voice asked from behind them. They both turned around and saw Van and Gaddes. "Sir its morning!" Gaddes said, "You've been up all night!" "What?" Dena said not believing them. Then she looked towards the sky and realized they were right. The sun was just beginning to rise. "You better get ready…" Gaddes said. Allen knew Gaddes was right; he knelt down, kissed Dena's hand and said, "Take care Dena…" then he walked off.
