Star walked into Skye's room intending to ask her a question. She froze a few steps into the room.
“Close the door if you're planning on standing there gawking,” Skye said and went back to what she had been doing before.
Star closed the door and went to sit on the floor next to her sister.
“How did you manage to get enough of his hair?”
“Oh, please. That was the easy part, the man sheds like mad,” Skye said, finishing the last stitch and biting the thread. “Think it's a good likeness?”
“I think it's a freaky accurate likeness.”
“Good. Let's hope it works.” Skye took a piece of white silk from her nightstand and wrapped it carefully around the little doll in her hands. “Are you helping?”
“Sure. A little extra magick couldn't hurt,” Star said. “Are you going to cast circle?”
“I really don't see any point. The house and grounds are basically contained in a circle anyway. I can't think of a safer place to be than inside Goddess' magick. Can you?”
“Good point,” Star said. “Smells good. What did you put in it?”
“Pepper, cypress, geranium, yarrow and a few drops of niaouli.”
“That should work into the next several lifetimes.”
“One can only hope.”
Skye took a deep breath and let it out over the doll.
“Born of air, breath of life,” Skye said.
“Protected by fire, spark of life,” Star said.
“Moved by water, blood of life.”
“Grown in earth, source of life.”
Blaze's head shot up suddenly. She had felt a power surge within the house. She smiled a little and mentally joined the call.
Through souls own trust,
Through ties that bind,
I charge you now
To guard what's mine.
“Blaze, are you okay?” Ghost asked.
Blaze smiled at her. “Just fine, sweetheart. Go find the boys and meet me in the training room. I have some things I need to return to the three of you.”
Ghost looked at her oddly for a minute then went to find the boys.
Skye flopped back onto her bed, still holding the little doll to her chest. Star curled up next to her sister.
“Skye?”
“Hmm?”
“Are you sure you haven't taken this game a little too far?” Star said.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, I want to know if I'm getting a redheaded German for a brother in law.”
“Not that I'm aware of unless we have another sister that I don't know about. Why would you ask something like that?”
“Because, you haven't had to block anything from Sunny or Oracle in quite a while. Other than Oracle's visions at any rate. There's genuine love between the two of you now.”
“Yes. There is that. He's my friend, sis. I haven't really had one of those other than you in ages. It's nice to be able to share things you enjoy with someone else.”
“I was just wondering. You're incredibly protective of him.”
“Of course.”
Star reached over and took the poppet from Skye's hand.
“I hope this works.”
“Since when have Granny Po's magicks not worked?”
“They always do. But they sometimes work in strange ways,” Star said, handing the doll back to her. “Like she always said, “Them's dang-rous toys, cherie. If y'all don know what ta do with `em propah.”
“Magick takes the path of least resistance. I think I covered all of those bases when making it.”
“Let's hope so. Otherwise, we'll be losing two of them instead of one.”
“Speaking of the other one, is Oracle okay?”
“That depends on your definition of okay. I have to hard shield around him most of the time because it hurts.”
“I never thought this would get to be such a mess.”
“Didn't see that one coming, huh?”
“You know I can rarely see for myself. None of us can. It's only brief flashes of mundane things if anything. Nothing really substantial unless it's a life and death thing.”
“Probably why Oracle hasn't picked up on the fact that our bouncy little rubber ball boy has been in love with him for years. Such a waste of time.”
“True.”
“What are you going to do about Sunny?”
“What do you mean?”
Star shrugged. “He knows you and Schuldig aren't really a couple. I felt that shift in him the other day. Just wondering what you're planning on doing about that now.”
“Nothing.”
Star propped up on an elbow and looked at her sister. “Why not?”
“Because it's his move. If he knows Schu and I aren't really a couple and hasn't done or said anything about it by now, it indicates there's nothing to it. He really isn't interested in me like that.”
“I don't think that's the case, sis. You know there's nothing wrong with you making the direct approach. I know you and I were raised to believe that a man had to approach a woman in that area. But those times are long past.”
“I know, Star. I just can't seem to get the words out. I'd hate to make a fool of myself because it would make missions that much harder to deal with.”
“You were always hardwired different from me. You were always so much more mellow and genteel.”
“There are days when that is not a good thing,” Skye said. “It still hurts.”
“Yeah, I know,” Star said, pulling Skye to her so that her head rested on her shoulder. “Look, after this mission we'll go home for a few weeks. Okay? Goddess won't mind. I'll call ahead and warn Belle and the others before we go. I don't think the estate was damaged in the hurricanes. That has to be a minor miracle.”
“Mmmhmm.”
The conversation was cut short by Schuldig flinging open the door to Skye's room.
“The two for one package deal, cool,” he said before launching himself onto the bed between the two of them.
Both women laughed and Star distracted him for a moment.
He didn't notice when Skye carefully placed a flame haired little doll on the nightstand table and covered it in silk.

Pepper, cypress, geranium, yarrow and niaouli are protective in nature. These are often used in poppet magick, usually for children though often used for adults, to keep them safe from harm.
