“Gran! Incoming!” Star shouted from across the room.
“I know.” Sunny, can you contain whatever it might be without Skye for a few minutes?
Of course. If nothing else, Skye is always thorough in her teaching.
Good to know.
Crawford adjusted his glasses because he was fairly certain he was seeing things as the floor began to bubble and blacken in the middle. Ken vaulted onto the nearest table and shot Star a questioning look.
No idea yet. Have to wait until they materialize.
They?
Yup. Should be several of them.
The floor continued to bubble and within each bubble a small form took shape. Barely two feet high with long spindly arms and razor sharp teeth. There seemed to be dozens of them boiling up from the floor.
Skye skidded to a halt half way down the stairs with Schuldig right behind her staring at the little things.
Scheisse! What the hell are those things?
Assassin sprites.
Didn't the Mistress say that's what tried to kill Bombay?
Yes.
Don't know you guys very well, do they.
This is only the first wave. It's only a minor test to gauge our strength. To see how easy or difficult is it for us to take care of these things. There will be many more to come. Never underestimate something because it's small, Schu. These are fast and lethal to human beings.
Oh, ja. I always underestimate the small. I take you, Star, Ghost and the Mistress totally for granted. I never once think of the fact the four of you happen to be hell's belles.
You have all sorts of interesting names for us, don't you?
Call it a hobby.
As the last of them came through the floor and crouched ready to spring at the nearest person, Skye manipulated the energy to contain them all inside of a sonic barrier. Sealing the floor beneath them as well. They thrashed and flailed against the invisible walls, trying to reach their prey. Hissing and chattering angrily at the inability to do so.
A low hum vibrated from Skye and the walls began to tighten, closing slowly inward on the small demons. She felt the answering vibration from Sunny on the other side of the room reinforcing what she had built.
Skye, Sunny, keep them all contained. I'll handle this, Blaze said. Leave an opening above them but keep the walls high enough so that they can't jump out. You know these things are spring-loaded.
Understood, Skye said.
Will do, was Sunny's reply.
Blaze sent her husbands one last glare before turning her attention fully to the task at hand.
Watari reached over the bar and pulled Crawford down onto one of the bar stools.
“You might want to be out of the way if she does what I think she's going to do,” he said.
Crawford nodded and tried to ignore the heat of Tatsumi's glare boring into the back of his head.
Blaze walked to the edge of the invisible wall watching the creatures fling themselves at the barrier in a vain attempt to get to her. She drew a deep breath and allowed her scarlet and gold wings to unfold from her shoulders and back. Then rose slowly into the air to hover over them. There was no fear in their beady eyes. They weren't programmed for fear. They were mindless killing machines with one purpose only. She held up both hands and twin pillars of blue/white fire appeared in them and though everyone was several feet away from her the backlash of heat was felt.
“Gods, I love it when she does things like this,” Watari said, putting his chin in one hand and looking dreamily up at his wife.
“You are so weird, Yutaka,” Tatsumi said, staring at him in disbelief.
“Yeah. But you love me anyway.”
“There are days when I wonder why, but yes.”
The pillars in Blaze's hands arched and crossed over each other, becoming a wave that washed over the things below her. Pained hisses and screams came from below as they were seared into one mass of disgusting slime. The second wave of flame burned so hot that even though it was contained within the circle, several tables caught fire from the resulting heat. The congealed mass contracted and flashed to powdery ash almost instantly.
“Ah, that's our sweet, meek and gentle little wife,” Watari said grinning.
“No, Yutaka,” Tatsumi said. “That is our nightmare bitch goddess from hell.”
That's the last one, Farf, Nagi said.
Good, my arms are getting tired. Just kidding.
What do we do with our unexpected comrade?
Send him with the kids to the safe point. I'm sure he'll want to be as far away as possible when this place goes to hell.
Got it. Nagi said. He turned to Ghost, Omi and Nikoru and quickly explained that Nikoru was to go with the kids to the safe point.
“I don't know if that's such a good idea,” Nikoru said. “I mean, I'm the one who usually transported them from place to place. If I go with them again they might think this is just another cruel joke.”
“I'll just have the contact threaten to shoot you if you try anything stupid,” Ghost said with a small smile. “That should ease their fears somewhat.”
“Thank you. For everything.”
“No trouble,” Omi said, putting an arm around Ghost while she reached to take Nagi's hand.
“Be safe. Take care of each other,” Nikoru said.
Nagi smiled at him. “Don't worry. We will.”
“I'll make sure he gets to the transport okay. Stay here until I get back and check to see what's going on upstairs,” Farf said.
“Blaze is working on whatever is going on upstairs,” Ghost said after watching Farf lead Nikoru out the door.
“How can you tell?” Omi asked.
“Because, I smell something burning.”
