Omi closed his eyes and took a deep breath after doing a quick ground and center. It had seemed to him that the feel of the air had wavered for just a moment. It had felt more solid.

“You found it?” was Ghost's question.

“I think so,” he said, putting his hand up and through the minor barrier. “I think this is it.”

Nagi smiled a little. “Told you it wouldn't be a problem, airhead.”

“Thanks for the confidence, freak.”

“Okay, enough of the name calling,” Ghost said. “We've got work to do.”

“Bossy, isn't she?” Omi said, grinning at Nagi.

“Look who she lives and trains with.”

“Point taken.”

Nagi shuddered suddenly and went almost completely white, dropping to his knees, gasping.

“Nagi! What is it?” Ghost asked, sitting down next to him, followed by Omi on the other side.

“Something's wrong.”

“What do you mean, Nagi?” Omi asked, rubbing his back in soothing circles.

Nagi fought the wave of dizziness, pain and nausea that threatened to overwhelm him.

“Crawford,” he said, looking up but not looking like he was actually seeing anything. “Something happened to Crawford.”

“Nagi, how do you know that?” Ghost asked.

“We're connected. All the members of Schwarz have a private path set up through Schuldig's telepathic links.” He blinked up at her, his eyes wide, “I can hear Schu's heart screaming. I know that doesn't make any sense . . .”

“Yes. I think it does,” Omi said. “Ghost, see if you can contact Skye. If anyone knows what's going on, especially with Schuldig, she does.”

Ghost nodded. Skye? You there? Ghost was happy she was sitting on the ground otherwise the pain Skye was feeling would have knocked her down.

Ghost?! Baby, are you okay? Where are you?

Mother Goddess, Skye, what happened?

Long story. Are the boys with you?

Yes, they're both here. We're all fine.

I think you need to forego whatever you were doing and get back here as soon as you can.

Skye, is . . . is Oracle dead?

What makes you say that?

Because it feels like you're siphoning off pain from Schuldig just to keep him from going completely insane. I can't think of anything that would make him hurt that much aside from losing either you or Oracle.

Come back in, babies. I think Schu needs to see that Nagi is okay. Jeirn is here with us already. You can fight whatever demons you have to later.

Skye, it sucked us all into alpha state and held us there separately, Ghost protested. I'm not sure we can hold off taking this thing down.

You'll have to. Please. Just get back here.

Okay, Skye.

Nagi and Omi were startled to find themselves flanked by two large men. They were even more surprised when Ghost bounced up from her seated position and hugged them both.

“Fen! Jory!”

“Hey, girlie girl, we haven't seen you in forever. Come on, baby doll. Sis wants you kids back with them pronto,” the man with reddish brown hair said.

“Why are you two here?”

The man smiled at her. “Consider us an armed escort if you will.”

Ghost's eyebrows shot up. “Why? We can take care or ourselves.”

“Yeah, but I don't think she's taking any off chances just now, sweetie.”

The other man nodded. “Especially after someone literally slid out of her hands.”

Ghost's face registered the shock she was feeling. “You mean that someone Blaze wanted to save got away from her?” she asked in disbelief.

The man Ghost had called Jory hunched down to her level. “He was a willing sacrifice, baby. You know those don't linger for even an instant after passing,” he said gently.

“Yeah,” Ghost said, glancing worriedly at Nagi. “I know.”

“Don't worry about it too much,” Fen said. “What's up with this one?” he asked, leaning his head toward Nagi, who was still on the ground, fighting another wave of nausea.

Omi shrugged. “We think he's pregnant. Ow!” he said as Nagi punched him in the kneecap.

Fen grinned at him then winked at the other man. “They fight like they're related. Evidently he isn't too bad off. C'mon, kiddo. I'll wolfie back you, it'll be easier,” he said, picking Nagi up like a rag doll and settling him on his back. He clamped a hand down on Omi's shoulder and phased them all into the building.

The instant they had materialized Aya stepped in front of the small party. Taking in Nagi draped over Fen's back and the much bigger man's hand holding onto Omi, he snarled at him.

Fen's lips twitched a little then his expression went deadly serious.

“Stand down, beta. They're completely safe with me,” Fen said.

Aya snorted and gave him one last disgusted look before padding back over to Yohji and crouching directly in front of him.

Yohji absently toyed with Aya's fur and looked puzzledly at Sunny.

“Why did he call Aya beta?”

Sunny grinned. “Pack structure. Basically Fen recognizes Aya as a beta, second in command.”

Yohji grimaced and glared at Fen. “Aya is not a second in command, he's a first,” he said, sounding offended.

“He is with your group,” Sunny said. “Probably so in most any other faction he's with as well. But Fen is the alpha and really doesn't need to prove it. It's an honor for Aya to be considered a beta by him with no contest.”

Fen walked to where Schuldig was still holding on to Crawford's body and lowered Nagi carefully beside him. Schuldig let go with one arm and wrapped it around Nagi.

Jory took Skye by the hand and gently pulled her away from them.

“But . . .” she started to protest.

“Leave them to their own grief, niece. You've pulled all the pain from him you're capable of holding. Any more would be a detriment to everyone.”

Skye nodded and leaned into him a little, her right hand scrubbing at the wet trails on her cheeks. “It's my pain too, Jor,” Skye said.

“I know it is,” he said, cradling her against his chest. “You were always so tender hearted. It's harder for you than anyone else to see someone they care about suffer through this kind of loss.”

“Jormund, what are you and the hyperactive puppy doing here?” the woman holding the spear asked.

Fen's eyebrows shot up. “Hyperactive puppy? Nice to see you again too, Morrigan.”

“You're worse than your father,” she snorted.

“Hey, I take that as high praise. Looks like we missed most of the party though,” he said, taking in the still frozen demons. “Thank the gods, because these taste bad. Exactly why did you freeze them? It isn't like baby sis can't take care of these annoying little bastards easily.”

“I would have thought that was obvious. I'm trying to keep the chaos factor to a minimum at the moment considering the circumstances,” Morrigan snarled at him and then turned to Blaze. “Edana, see to your family.”

“Mom, they aren't exactly . . .” Blaze began.

Morrigan smiled a little. “You love them and have tried to protect them. I can think of no other word that describes it but family,” she said, striding off toward the mass of demons. She glanced over one shoulder. “Fen, make yourself useful and fetch that,” she said, nodding to what seemed to be an empty spot on the opposite side of the room.

“Noisy little raven queen, isn't she?” Fen said, phasing to the spot and latching his hands around something only he seemed able to see. “Got him!” he shouted triumphantly.

“Fenris, when you ate the sun, were you perchance in your doggie brain going “Ooooh. Big yellow ball” ?” Morrigan asked sarcastically.

He felt . . . numb. No pain. Just numb. At least for a few seconds. Then it seemed as though every hurt in the world came crashing down on him. He rolled and sat up, spotting someone sitting a few yards away from him. He put one hand to his aching head and glared blearily at the other man.

“Who the hell are you?” he asked, trying to focus. The only feature he could make out on the person was long, red hair. Almost the color of Abyssinian's but darker.

He felt more than saw the man smile.

“I am the original shit disturber and master of chaos. At your service,” he said laughing.

“Funny, you don't look like Schuldig.”
