Blaze heard her cell phone ringing inside the house but didn't want to get up to answer it. She sat on the porch railing listening to the night sounds and enjoying the smells coming from the kitchen where Tatsumi was cooking dinner. She smiled contentedly as she focused on the quiet rumble of two baritone voices. The men she loved were talking, probably about her. She leaned forward a little in order to see them better. Tatsumi's arms were wrapped around Watari's waist and he in turn had his arms around Tatsumi's neck. She watched Watari put his head on Tatsumi's shoulder and thought that losing a good portion of her skin and hair had been a small price to pay for his return home.
003 fluttered down and hopped along the porch rail for a moment then peered interestedly into Blaze's coffee cup. The little owl looked up at her and hooted softly before flying up and settling comfortably on her shoulder. She reached up and stroked the owl's feathers, smiling softly to herself. 003 seemed to be quite happy to be home as well.
She mentally kicked herself again for getting distracted on a mission. Her mind had been on her missing husband and not on her work as it should have been. In retrospect she supposed she shouldn't have taken it on in the first place in that frame of mind. But the need to have a problem she could do something about had been almost overwhelming at the time.
There were still problems though. Still trust issues that would eventually have to be dealt with on a much more intensive scale. But for right now, it was just good to have Watari back where he belonged.
She heard the cell phone ring again and was mustering the energy to go answer it when Watari brought it out to her.
“It's Omi,” he said, handing it to her. He sat down in one of the wide deck chairs and pulled Blaze onto his lap. 003 hooted indignantly at him before flying off to the porch rail again. Blaze smiled at him and put the phone to her ear.
“Hey, bishounen. How are things on that end?”
“Fine. Everyone's packed and ready to go. How are you?”
“I'm okay. Still kicking myself in the ass for being careless,” she said. Then tilted her head when she felt Watari's fingers sifting through her hair; which was still growing back in. “I'll come and check on you, Nagi and Ghost later in the week. Okay?”
“That would be great,” Omi said, sounding relieved and just a little sad.
“What's wrong? You sound sad.”
“I can't help it. I just feel like a lot of things I've gotten comfortable with are ending,” Omi said.
“I can understand that. But some things have to end so others can begin.”
“I know. My life had to temporarily end so I could eventually be here with Nagi and Ghost. But the whole process has been a very strange ride. I didn't understand the full implications until recently. But I'm glad it happened. All of it.”
“I'm happy you feel that way.”
“So, you'll be here later this week?”
“I'll be there. Tell everyone I said to be careful.”
“I will. And Lady . . .”
She could almost hear him smile as he reverted back to what he had originally called her. Dear gods, had it really been a year ago? “Yes, bishounen?”
“I'm glad you brought me back. None of the good that came out of it would have happened without you.”
“I'm glad I was there when you needed me and I'm honored that you think so highly of me. Be good.”
“I will. Bye.”
“Bye,” Blaze said and disconnected the call.
“You know, my love,” Tatsumi said from the doorway. “You can't save them forever.”
Blaze held out her hands to him and he took them. She pulled him down into the seat next to Watari. She leaned her head against Watari's chest and curled her legs around Tatsumi's.
“That's true,” Watari said, putting his arm around her a little more firmly. “Eventually, everyone has to die.”
“I know that. But I can prevent any of them from going before it's really their time.”
*************************Mad Ramblings aka Author's Notes******************************
Well, gang, that's the end of this story. I sincerely hope everyone who read this fic enjoyed it. Don't worry, for those who are interested, there will be sequels. You didn't think I'd leave you all hanging forever, did you? The sequels will be shorter, I swear. I can hardly believe I was only going to do the initial nine pages for this.
Thank you to everyone who's read, reviewed, cajoled, threatened and been there to support through all of this. As always, thanks to the fabulous Assassins Anonymous group.
