Part 4

After getting their ice cream, the two sat at one of the many table and chairs set outside the ice cream parlor. Bright colours from neon signs glittered behind them as they talked. Ran was sitting in one of the red plastic chairs still a little nervous, but found himself enjoying the conversation he and Farferello were having, the other in question had his boots propped on the table, and oozed confidence. Ran found himself a little jealous of the other man, he was confident, friendly, and the more he got to know him, the more he thought the other was cute.

Still quiet, he let Farferello do the talking. So far they'd worked out answers to any questions that might be asked. They settled on details together, going over them so they'd remember. So far, it was set that they'd been going out for almost two months, and Farferello had met the redhead at his work place, and had slowly coaxed the shy man into a date. Ran found himself wishing that it was true as he watched the man talk with his hands, every now and then dipping his spoon into the vanilla ice cream he was eating and licking it clear from the spoon. Farferello had noticed Ran trying to subtly watch him, but to someone not use to hiding their reactions it was pretty hard.

"You know Ran, sorry if this is personal, but I really don't see why you'd need to hire someone like me. You're an attractive, friendly man. A little shy, but a lot of people like that these days".

He swallowed the last of his ice-cream, making a show of licking the spoon clean with his tongue before placing it back in the bowl as he watched Ran finish his mouthful before speaking.

"I-I never have the time. If it's not work or college, it's my sister... I just never found the time and I'm to shy… most people I meet want quick sex. I'm not saying I want candle light, roses and a declaration of love, but I want more than a quick tumble in someone's car". He sighed softly, looking down at his folded hands.

Farferello watched quietly, he felt sorry for the guy, he'd been the same before his accident, shy, virginal, wanting something sweet and romantic that in most people's minds were un-accomplishable. After he was able to walk properly, and leave hospital from the bike crash, he'd thought he would never find someone to hold and touch him. He'd even tried suicide when he received taunts for his appearance, people calling him a freak, but he'd met Schu in the hospital almost four years prior, the red head in for depression, and their relationship had grown to friendship both helping the other overcome their desperation to be accepted. Confidence had come slowly, but Farferello had decided to take the world by the reins, and grasp it tightly, no longer wanting to be a victim to people who couldn't accept him.

Fuck them, he'd said, he'd stuck his finger up, sneered and laughed, he was better than they were. It didn't matter to him anymore that he was scarred and one eyed. He was confident, and in the eyes of many, oddly beautiful.

"Ran… love these days is hard and painful but when you find that special someone, the past isn't significant anymore. We've all been through crap, we've all been shy or lonely or unloved but I know it gets better. We just have to wait".

He smiled softly at the other man. He never took so much time with his other customers, but there was something about the redheads loneliness that hit a cord deep within.

"I know Farf… I just wish it would happen sooner".

Staying quiet, they waited for the bill, both paying their half before getting up and leaving the parlor.

"Do you want me to walk you home? I might as well get use to the area if I'm going to pick you up Friday".

After a lot of thought, Ran nodded and they continued the walk to Ran's apartment in silence. Once at the door, Ran turned around to face the Irishman, his eyes bright, showing happiness for once.

"Thanks for the ice cream… it was nice talking to you". He waited, and held his breath as Farferello moved closer. For a moment he thought the other would kiss him, but Farferello only removed a piece of fluff from the red head's jacket.

"I had a nice time to. I'll see you Friday, Good night".

He left quietly, allowing Ran to follow him with his gaze before he disappeared out of sight. Once gone, Ran opened the door and slipped inside, shaking his head at his foolishness.

"Like he'd want to kiss me".

The door closed behind him and cut off the chilly night air, the wind howling behind outside.

~~~~~~~~
From that night, the days went slowly. Ran found himself looking around the restaurant each night in hope to see the other again, but was only paid a visit once by Schuldich. The German made sure that Ran got his number, scribbling it onto his hand before winking again.
"Call me if Farf can't give you want you want".
He'd slipped out, leaving the red head staring at his hand, mostly in disgust. Schuldich was exactly the type of man he'd tried to stay away from, and wondered how it was possible that he and someone like Farferello could have been together, the fact that Schu had cheated on him hadn't gone un-noticed.
"He must have been mad to cheat on someone so nice".
Staring at his hand, he snapped out of his gaze when someone banged into him, and he quickly carried on with his work.
~~~~~~

When Friday eventually came, he took the day off, the first since he'd worked there in fact and had gotten up early, six in the morning to stare at his wardrobe for nearly an hour.

"What the hell am I going to wear to a club?"

He cursed a little before running around to get showered and dressed. He needed to go shopping.
