Weiss Kreuz Fan Fiction ❯ Broken ❯ Numb ( Chapter 1 )
Author's note: Once again much thanks to my favourite beta-reader ko-chan whose fault it is I had to include Weiss into this story.. ;) Hope you like it and trust me, those snippets will make sense eventually, once I get some time to write some longer chapters.. ;)

"Okay, so I got milk, cheese, bread, those creamy.. things Omi wanted, your fruits, cigarettes.. Did I forget anything?" Yoji entered the kitchen and put the shopping bags down, rummaging through one of them and fishing out a magazine, trying to read its title upside down, "'Sport's weekly' number 7, right? Catch!" Without looking up he threw the magazine at the counter where he could see Ken's shape out of the corner of his eyes.
It landed on the floor at Ken's feet with a soft sound, but Ken didn't react, didn't move a muscle to pick up his dearly loved magazine. Yoji looked up from the bags to make a remark about Ken's lousy reaction, but what he saw stopped him dead in his tracks: Ken was standing in front of the counter, both hands gripping the top so hard his knuckles were slowly turning white, completely frozen to the spot. From where Yoji was standing he could only see Ken's back which was trembling slightly.
"Ken?"
The magazine completely forgotten Yoji took a careful step towards him and softly called out his name again.
"Ken?"
He was almost standing behind the smaller man now and he could see Ken's profile, the younger man was staring wide-eyed at something in front of him, but Yoji could not yet make out what it was.
"Hey, yo, Ken, what happened?"
Yoji was getting very nervous now, something was definitely wrong here. He slowly stepped around Ken and strained his neck to have a look at what Ken was staring at.
And was completely taken aback when he finally discovered that Ken was staring at.. the answering machine.
"Ken, what the fuck.."
He took a step forward, intending to lay a hand on Ken's shoulder to shake it gently, but in that moment Ken's gaze shifted from the answering machine and he slowly turned his head towards Yoji, who started when he saw that Ken's brown eyes were wide with shock.
"Ken, what happened?" Yoji's voice was soft now, he spoke slowly as one would speak to a frightened child, as that was exactly what Ken looked like at the moment. Apparently something had upset Ken so bad that he couldn't speak, he just kept staring at Yoji's face unblinking, without making any sounds. Yoji didn't think that Ken was really seeing him, to him it seemed more as if Ken was staring straight ahead and that sight really scared him.
"Ken, I'm going to touch you now, just don't freak out on me, okay?" He slowly closed the distance between himself and his younger friend and tentatively put a hand on Ken's right shoulder, frowning when he could feel Ken trembling under his touch ever so slightly. "Ken, you're scaring me, what happened?"
The soccer player still didn't really acknowledge his presence and Yoji became really scared. Something was very wrong here. His gaze went back to the answering machine and the blinking display told him, that it had received a message. He pressed the button and looked back at Ken attentively, but when the familiar voice sounded it was his turn to stare at the machine.
"It's me. I've just called to let you know that I'm still around. I need to talk to you, you know where to find me."
Ran…
