Part 2.

Yohji found that it was hard, but not impossibly hard to pull back a bit from Ran. He didn't avoid Ran that would have been impossible since they worked together at both their day and night jobs.

No instead he pulled away from Ran's touches, while Aya had been extremely non-tactile, Ran lived for everyday touches, but Yohji couldn't bear them anymore, they were only going to cause further heartbreak.

Whenever Ran went on a date, Yohji made sure that he was out of the house going out clubbing and only returning when he was sure the redhead would be asleep. He didn't sleep around, he knew how much that worried his team-mates but he didn't want to be there when Ran returned and wanted to talk about his latest conquest, although to be fair the redhead never phrased it like that or had ever slept with any of them.

Yohji had decided that he would be a good friend to Ran and so he still let the man talk about his dates, but no longer at night. During the day, the sunlight could burn away the hurtful images that Ran described, could cleanse and soothe Yohji so that he could be the friend that Ran wanted him to be. He couldn't take these conversations at night which seemed to be made for lovers, not friends.

Yohji knew that Ran was confused, worried about what was wrong, wondered why Yohji never let Ran touch him anymore, why he was out till the crack of dawn, but Yohji had to protect himself. He had lost one love of his life to death, and now another to fate. Cruel, ironic fate that ensured that even though Ran was gay that he wanted nothing more than friendship.

“You're hurting him you know?” Yohji was entirely unprepared for the confrontation with Aya-chan. “He doesn't understand why you are pulling away, why you're destroying yourself again.” Of course the girl had heard about his previous self-destruction after Neu, and had seen his latest habit of going to sleep with a bottle of alcohol for comfort, it helped him sleep.

“I know sweetheart.” The words were quietly whispered.

She hugged him tight, “You're hurting too. I'm sorry I didn't realise. You should tell him.”

Yohji was quiet for a long time, lost in the embrace. “No it wouldn't be good for the team; he wouldn't know how to act around me. He'd try to avoid me; it would cause too many problems. It's better this way.”

“Oh Yotan.”

Ran passed the doorway of the kitchen, saw Yohji being comforted by his sister and was happy that the blonde was finally ready to talk. He walked in and attempted to hug the blonde too, who jerked when he felt Ran's touch and sped out of the kitchen.

“Why won't he let me help?” the redhead watched forlornly after the blonde.

“Oh Ran he's dealing with it the best way he knows how, although not the healthiest I might add.” Drinking one's self to sleep was never healthy.

Ran felt a tug on his ear tail and then was promptly wrapped in Aya-chan's arms; the girl was really good at giving comfort.

“I still wish he'd let me help,” the redhead whispered, not really expecting an answer. Ran had tried to help, tried to get the blonde to talk, one night especially when he had heard the blonde sobbing in his room, he had been all prepared to walk in and had forgotten about the blonde's latest habit of locking his door at night to prevent their late night talks.

“Yohji open this door and tell me what's wrong.”

“Oh sorry Ran I was just remembering Asuka, forget about it. I'm going to bed now anyway.”

Liar. The blonde hadn't had a sob-fest about Asuka for a while, so Ran had sat outside Yohji's door listening to him sob, and waited for the blonde to let him in. Omi had found him there the next morning.

“Just leave him alone Ran, there's nothing you can do.”

It was at that point that Ran realised that everyone else knew what was wrong.

“Tell me. Tell me who broke his heart and I'll beat the crap out of him.”

Omi smiled a bit sadly, “You probably would too, but it would only give him more pain. He'll get over it Ran.”

“Like he got over Asuka?”

“He did eventually. It's better this way.”

Ran had stormed off, and then tried to be nicer to Yohji that day, who reacted by avoiding him by doing the deliveries.

“Ran what do you want out of life?”

Ran jerked, he had forgotten he was still hugging Aya-chan, had gotten lost in the memories.

“No dark beasts in the world, for you to be happy and for Yohji to be happy.”

“I can't do anything about the first, but I am happy and,” Aya-chan bit her lip debating about what to say. “I suspect Yohji will be happy soon, sooner than either of you expect.”
