Epilogue: Never

Six months later………………………

He smiled slightly, a rare luxury that he had now begun to enjoy. He looked down at his reflection in the still water. There was a bit of wind, rippling the liquid surface and disfiguring his almost perfect likeness. A sakura petal flew gently towards him and his eyes shifted towards the transfixing beauty that he had been taught to appreciate. He raised his head, disheveled red hair falling and flowing softly around his face and all over his back. The long locks bothered him, but he had promised Yohji to let it grow, he had gotten more than enough appeasement in bed with his lover. Yohji's newfound infatuation with the swordsman's hair had led to many adventures in the bedroom that brought a slight flush to Aya's pale complexion. He gazed at the sky, tilting his head to face the full glare of the sun, the movement slow in its resplendent languor.

[Baka.]

He turned sharply, his eyes reduced to menacing slits, "Get the hell out of my head."

[Tsk. Tsk. Bad kitty-cat, I came for your answer.]

"Go to hell."

Laughter rang out loud, and it vibrated through his mind. The German stared at him, his eyes twinkling with malice and anticipation. His hair was no longer drawn back by that horrible yellow bandana and he was dressed in an immaculate white suit. Carrot colored tresses swayed gently in the breeze and the sensuous curve of the mouth was stretched into a lazy grin.

"No."

[Being stubborn are you?]

An image flashed through his mind, of Aya-chan trembling on a cold floor, hair limp and tangled, her body skeletal, looking half starved and her eyes, oh god, her eyes. Aya stiffened; his eyes icy and wary.

[I told you. They'll train her, use her, and then kill her. No more games Aya. Give me what I want and I promise...............]

"No." he whispered, his voice soft, completely broken.

Then he was face to face with that sadistic smile, his eyes clashing against the lightest jade green he had ever seen. Lips touched his tentatively, almost reverently.

[I wanted you once you know. It no longer matters. Make up your mind.]

Aya shook his head, uselessly trying to clear his mind and the haze of confusion that clouded his senses. "I need time."

Schuldig grinned, "I knew you'd say that."

Aya looked at him, his eyes chilled ice, the bewilderment gone. In its place was a cold calculation, and a formidable determination, "I want a year."

Light green eyes held his gaze intently, "What if I say no."

No answer.

The gaijin laughed softly, "Done."

Violet orbs revealed nothing, "Understood."

Schuldig laughed again, this time a harsh mocking sound, "He's mine, Abyssinian. Don't forget that."

Then he was gone.

Aya stood staring after him, his mind empty and body unmoving. The water moved and he gazed into the restless pond. He realized how dirty it was and it no longer held any beauty in his eyes, with a disgusted sound he looked away.

"Ayan!"

The raised tenor came from behind him and he closed his eyes, willing it away from him.

"Here eat it fast or it will melt, not too fast or you'll get a brain freeze."

Now he remembered, he was on a date with Yohji. It was simply the stupidest idea he had ever heard of, but then again it came from the slightly idiotic depths of Yohji Kudoh's brain. How the hell was an ice cream date going to cheer him up? Trust Yohji to come up with that. Aya took the cone in his hands, glaring at it for all he was worth and brought it closer to his mouth, taking a small lick.

He found forest green eyes looking at him expectantly.

"It's good," he said, taking another lick.

Yohji smiled.

Aya stilled, he had been many a time on the receiving end of that slow grin that had different levels of wickedness. The convincing façade was gone, the Noh mask discarded and Yohji was the fragile remains. It was a smile of pure joy, a gentle crinkling at the corner of deep green eyes and the joyful lift of the soft mouth. Yohji slouched gracefully beside him, long limbs stretched out lazily on the grass. Long fingered hands ran through his long hair gently, occasionally tugging at errant strands, earning the older man a warning growl before the redhead resumed to happily finishing off the rest of his ice cream. Aya stared at Yohji, lapping at the last of the creamy vanilla concoction. "I love you."

Yohji blinked, still unused to the spontaneous show of affection, he gathered Aya into the nest of his arms, fitting the smaller man in the circle of his gentle embrace. He rested his chin on Aya's head; feeling strands of crimson hair tickle his nose. "I love you too."

Aya hummed slightly and settled more comfortably against his body, leaning into him completely, without qualms, his body lax and rested.

It was a moment of utter contentment only broken by the twittering of nearby birds. Yohji held Aya's head cradled to his chest, his fingers raking and parting silky wine-colored strands. They lay together, listening to their heartbeats. Aya breathed the clean scent of his lover and he pushed troubling thoughts out of his mind. He was content; that would suffice for now.

"More ice cream?" Yohji asked.

"Okay." Aya replied.

They rose, dusting their jeans and picking out blades of grass. Yohji gave him a silly grin, radiating happiness and Aya gifted him with a small smile in return. A cool breeze fluttered, rustling leaves and dancing over their clothes. They walked leisurely towards the ice cream parlor nearby, Yohji occasionally saying something that would make Aya smile briefly, sometimes even laugh softly. They were lost in their own world, their bodies close together, their hands entwined and firmly clasped as if they would never let go.
